Miss Shepherd does not die in the Mysterious World

Ch. 50

Chapter 50: The Basement

“Creaaak—”

The library door was forcefully pushed open.

Jason stood at the door, his gaze warily surveying the library's interior, his brow slightly furrowed.

“Strange, I should have heard someone's voice just now”

The man mumbled to himself, then slowly paced into the library, his sharp gaze sweeping the surroundings.

In the dim light, the tall bookshelves stood like silent guards, hiding secrets in their shadows.

The air was filled with the smell of old books, mixed with a faint, mysterious aura.

Jason's footsteps echoed in the silent space, each step feeling like it was treading on Vilnia's and my tense nerves.

Thanks to the workers moving the bookshelves earlier, the traces of Vilnia's and my activities were all covered up.

Right now, we were hiding behind a bookshelf, tightly enveloped by Vilnia's shadow, not even daring to breathe.

Just a second before Jason pushed the door open, I had grabbed Vilnia and activated Void Walk.

This was how we avoided the consequence of being caught red-handed.

Jason stopped, his brow furrowed.

His intuition told him something was amiss here, but everything before him seemed so ordinary.

The newly placed bookshelves were neatly arranged, without the slightest trace of being disturbed.

Jason continued to walk forward, his gaze sweeping over every corner, as if he wanted to inspect the entire library.

Just then, a faint noise caught his attention.

Jason turned abruptly and walked towards the direction the sound came from.

“Click.”

It was the sound of a book sliding off the pile.

The man quickly walked to the source of the sound, bent down to pick up the fallen book, completely oblivious to a shadow quietly retracting in the corner.

He opened the book, only to find the text inside twisted and distorted, as if squirming under his gaze.

“This is....”

Before Jason could finish his sentence, he suddenly felt a wave of dizziness.

So he hurriedly closed the book and returned it to its original place.

“So this is the truth revealed by (Knowledge)....”

Jason looked at the book with some reluctance.

“If I could just get a glimpse of it, what a great honor that would be...”

Jason mumbled to himself, then walked to the door, seemingly preparing to leave.

Vilnia and I waited patiently until the sound of the wooden door being closed and locked again was heard, and only then did we breathe a sigh of relief.

“That was close....”

Vilnia said softly.

“Thank goodness for you, Mel.”

Her words were like a wisp of smoke, slowly dispersing in the silent air.

As soon as Vilnia's voice fell, I slowly emerged from the shadows, as if re-condensing from nothingness.

The two of us were still pressed close together, and Vilnia could even feel my rapid heartbeat through the thin fabric of my clothes.

“It's nothing. If it weren't for you, he might not have left so quickly.”

I responded softly, my voice carrying a trace of relief after the tension.

I carefully loosened my tight grip on Vilnia's hand, feeling the residual warmth of her skin.

We cautiously peeked out from behind the bookshelf, and only after confirming that Jason had indeed left did we fully emerge from our hiding place.

The library returned to silence, with only our slightly hurried breathing echoing in the empty room.

“Let's leave quickly.”

Vilnia said, “That guy might come back.”

“I think I've seen him before...”

I looked at the door and said softly.

“In that person's memory, I've seen him.... he's the guy who follows Allen.”

Hearing this, Vilnia was stunned and turned her head sharply to look at me.

“Really?”

“Mm.”

I nodded seriously, and then my gaze involuntarily drifted towards the pile of books covered by the cloth.

Those strange words seemed to still be swirling in my mind, tempting me to investigate again.

Vilnia noticed my gaze and gently tugged at my sleeve.

“Don't worry about those for now, Mel—we really should go. Let's tell Bishop Oliver about this first, and then inform The Fifth Department. Since one of Allen's subordinates came here, it must mean this is the real ritual site.”

Hearing this, I came back to my senses and forced a smile.

“Mm, you're right, let's go.”

We quietly approached the library's main door.

Vilnia carefully turned the doorknob, only to find that the door was already locked.

“Tsk, damn it.... that guy locked the door when he left.”

Vilnia cursed under her breath.

“Looks like we'll have to use Void Walk again—hold on tight, Vilnia.”

I said, and before my hand was fully extended, Vilnia grabbed it.

“I'm ready.”

Vilnia smiled.

I nodded slightly, then prepared to activate Void Walk.

But just then, a clamor of delirious speech abruptly rang in my ears, as if countless tiny voices were whispering at the same time.

Although these voices were noisy, they seemed to be guiding me towards something.

“What's wrong?”

Seeing my lack of movement, Vilnia couldn't help but ask.

“Wait, Vilnia.”

I said in a low voice, “I think.... I heard something.”

Hearing this, Vilnia looked at me with confusion, but did not let go of my hand.

“What did you hear?”

“Some... voices.”

I said slowly, my gaze searching the surroundings.

“They're calling me.... it seems they want to take me somewhere.”

Hearing this, Vilnia immediately became alert.

“Wait a minute, Mel, this can't be a good thing.... we should leave quickly. In the end, the fact that someone is talking in your ear is already outrageous enough. We should really leave quickly.”

Hearing this, I seemed a bit hesitant.

I could understand Vilnia's worry, but those delirious voices were attracting me like a magnet.

In the unseen world, I felt that if I just left this time, I would probably regret it for the rest of my life.

“I know this is crazy....”

I said after a moment's hesitation, “But I always feel that these voices are guiding us.... just let me try, Vilnia.”

“This is too dangerous.”

Vilnia insisted on pulling me away, but I seemed to have made up my mind, standing my ground and refusing to leave.

“Just let me be willful this once, okay?”

Vilnia looked at my determined gaze, struggled internally for a moment, and finally gave in.

“You know I could never have the heart to refuse you, right?”

Vilnia sighed, “Hurry up then. At least, before someone comes back.”

“Mm, thank you, Vilnia.”

I smiled gratefully, then closed my eyes and began to move slowly through the library, following the guidance of the delirious speech.

As we drew closer, the delirious speech in my ears became clearer and louder.

We moved cautiously between the bookshelves and finally arrived at an inconspicuous corner.

My gaze fell on a wooden board on the wall, which seemed a little different.

“This is it.”

I said softly, then reached out and pushed the wooden board.

“Click.”

With a soft click, the wooden board actually caved inward, revealing a hidden switch.

Seeing this, Vilnia gasped.

“There's actually a secret room here?”

I didn't answer, just gently pressed the switch.

With the sound of a mechanism operating, the wall in front of us slowly moved aside, revealing a deep and dark passage.

We looked at each other and saw a trace of nervousness and excitement in each other's eyes.

“Are we really going in?”

Vilnia asked in a low voice, “What if it's dangerous inside...”

“But this might be our only chance.”

I said firmly, “If we miss it this time, it might be too late next time.”

Hearing this, Vilnia took a deep breath and nodded.

“Let's go then”

Hand in hand, we stepped into the darkness before us.
