Chapter 45: God's Descent Ritual
“God's descent means.... a god descending?”
I asked softly.
“Of course not.”
Vilnia shook her head, “At just this level, it's not enough for a god to descend personally. The so-called god's descent, to elaborate, should be the descent of a divine miracle. But just the descent of a divine miracle alone can have unimaginable consequences. Even if they themselves have no ill intentions, no one can guarantee what consequences their power will bring when it descends upon the world.”
“Then, I will tell The Fifth Department and Bishop Oliver about this today.”
I said after a moment of silence.
“That's the only way. The current situation is already beyond our ability to handle.”
Vilnia nodded in approval.
The day's classes ended in a state of distraction.
After saying goodbye to Vilnia, I left the classroom.
I first went to Saint Margaret's Church, but I couldn't see Oliver right away.
According to Sister Irene, Oliver seemed to be meeting with someone very important.
So, I sat in the prayer hall and waited for a while.
I sat in the front row, gazing at the faceless statue full of divinity.
The huge, faceless statue stood on the altar, its cold marble gleaming with a solemn luster in the sunlight.
Faint echoes reverberated in the empty hall, like the silent whispers of a god.
I quietly watched the statue, my thoughts gradually drifting away.
That blank face seemed to be silently narrating some kind of truth, and also seemed to be scrutinizing everything in the mortal world.
“Click, clack.”
Footsteps came from behind.
I turned around and saw Sister Irene walking this way.
“The Bishop will be a little longer before his meeting ends,” Sister Irene said with a smile, “Would you like some tea?”
“Yes, thank you.”
I nodded in response.
Sister Irene brought a cup of steaming black tea, its aroma filling the air.
I took the teacup and took a light sip.
The warm liquid slid down my throat, slightly relaxing my tense nerves.
“You look like you have something on your mind?”
Sister Irene sat down beside me.
“Yes...”
I looked at the teacup in my hand and said softly, “A lot has happened recently.”
“Would you like to tell me about it?”
I shook my head, “Sorry, it's better to wait until I see Bishop Oliver to talk about these things.”
Sister Irene nodded in understanding and didn't press further.
We just sat there quietly.
Occasionally, a believer would come in to pray, kneel before the statue, and then leave silently.
(Will a god really descend... if a god's descent really happens, what will this world become? Or rather.... the world before, the world as I knew it, what exactly did it go through?)
My gaze fell on the faceless statue once again.
I suddenly noticed that the statue's shadow seemed to be twisting and distorting on the ground, forming a strange pattern.
“Thump, thump, thump—”
Heavy footsteps came from the corridor, interrupting my thoughts.
I looked up and saw a tall man leaving through a side door of the prayer hall.
The man was wearing an exquisite black robe, and his back gave off an inexplicable sense of pressure.
“Miss Mel,” Sister Irene stood up, “The Bishop should be able to see you now.”
“Okay.”
I put down the teacup in my hand.
As I followed Sister Irene out of the prayer hall, I subconsciously glanced back.
The faceless statue still stood there, solemn and majestic.
In the familiar reception room, I saw Oliver.
“Good afternoon, Miss Mel.”
Oliver said with a smile.
“My apologies, I was just discussing some matters with people from Saint Clement's Lyceum, sorry to have kept you waiting.”
“Saint Clement's Lyceum?”
I raised my eyebrows slightly, “Aren't the Red Moon and Knowledge opposed?”
“We are opposed in faith, but that doesn't mean we cannot cooperate.”
Oliver said with a smile.
“When it comes to presiding over rituals, no one is more professional than a believer of the Red Moon. Besides, the purpose of their visit this time was also because of the Omniscience Society. Every organization has the duty to regulate extremist groups. Saint Clement's Lyceum must interfere with the actions of the Omniscience Society and the Truth Poetry Society. Just as we must also pay attention to the Crimson Apostles and the Blood Progeny Society, this is not just the job of The Fifth Department.”
“I see”
I showed a look of understanding.
“So, your visit to me, is it because the Omniscience Society has done something again?”
Oliver seemed to have seen through my intentions and asked directly.
I sat opposite Oliver, my hands folded on my lap.
I took a deep breath, and then recounted everything Vilnia had told me in detail.
“It seems they really can't wait.”
Oliver's expression became solemn.
“No wonder the people from Saint Clement's Lyceum came looking for me.”
“Can they really do it?”
I couldn't help but ask.
“Theoretically, it is possible.”
Oliver stood up and walked to the window.
“In history, there have indeed been several records of the descent of divine miracles, and each time it caused an irreversible disaster. But similarly, every descent of a divine miracle is accompanied by the birth of an Anointed or a Crown Wearer. The Omniscience Society plans to use this extreme method to reach The Anointed.... no, I'm afraid they want to advance to Crown Wearer.”
He turned around, looking at me with a deep gaze.
“Actually, the god's descent ritual has always been forbidden, do you know why?”
I shook my head.
“Because the essence of a divine miracle is the infinite amplification of a god's authority.”
Oliver said slowly.
“When a divine miracle descends, a certain corresponding authority will be infinitely expanded as the main body. For example, (Knowledge). Its main authorities are knowledge and madness. If the latter is infinitely expanded, I don't need to say more. And even if the former is infinitely expanded, the impact it brings is also extremely terrifying. Once you are affected, you will comprehend a vast amount of knowledge in an instant. Those formulas and truths will stuff your head to bursting, their complexity alone is enough to make a person's brain completely stop functioning. In more severe cases, the brain might even melt completely, eyeballs burst, and blood vessels all over the body rupture. Not to mention that the knowledge it grants is also mixed with content that should never be known. Once some truths are known, they will plunge a person into eternal madness. If one is truly tainted by this knowledge, then death is the only way to be liberated.”
Hearing this, I couldn't help but shiver.
“The Omniscience Society has gone to such great lengths to set up the ritual, I'm afraid your school won't be the only ritual site. They must have other alternative locations.”
Oliver pondered for a moment, then continued: “I will report this matter to The Fifth Department. I hope there is still enough time for everything.”
