Chapter 223: Valiant

Yan Liqiang was dumbstruck by the arrows which suddenly came flying out from the bushes in the distance and the mysterious flames which suddenly appeared around the old Shatu man.

With his cultivation of the Third Heavenly Layer in the art of archery, Yan Liqiang could tell just by listening with his ears that one of the two arrows shot at that old Shatu man was launched with a powerful bow of five piculs, while the other was from a powerful three picul bow.

However, these two deadly arrows were blocked by the fire which appeared around the old man when they were about to reach him.

Everything simply seemed too magical in Yan Liqiang’s eyes. He had never expected someone to actually be able to block arrows this way before.

The flames protected the old Shatu man like a glowing shield. It completely enveloped the old man. The flickering flames cast a red light on the dried up needlegrass around him, making it appear bloody. Yan Liqiang, who was hiding nearby, was indescribably shocked. If this was the old Shatu man’s cultivation, then he was simply terrifying.

Before Yan Liqiang could recover from his shock, the group of Shatu guards around the old man drew their weapons and pounced on the bush where those arrows had come from while yelling. It was as though they were in a frenzy.

The slimmer and taller Shatu warrior dressed in dark red, who had drawn the tent flap open for the old man earlier, took the lead and rushed out first. He started sprinting like a wild horse after walking out about ten meters. He unsheathed the longsword hanging at his waist with a snarl, then charged toward the bushes…

The light vibration of a bowstring rang out in the air.

It sounded like it was from a powerful five picul bow. Yan Liqiang was slightly taken aback.

Shortly after that…

A sharp arrow came flying out from the bushes toward the Shatu warrior’s face…

Yet that didn’t stop the Shatu warrior from advancing. When the arrow was about to reach his face, he lifted both arms to guard against it.

Clank…! The flying arrow was blocked by the Shatu warrior in dark red clothes… It was actually repelled…!

The arrow ripped the Shatu warrior’s sleeves, exposing the two gleaming metal bracers underneath on his forearms, which were nearly a foot thick. When the two metal bracers were brought close together, they formed a shield which repelled the arrow at a hair’s breadth.

That arrow had merely knocked the Shatu warrior, who was charging forward, back a step. Soon after that, the Shatu warrior continued charging forward. While running, the Shatu warrior retrieved something from behind him. A pair of sickles which looked like two half-moons, appeared in his hands. They then flew out from his hands, transforming into two icy cold gleams that cut into the tall needlegrass…

The needlegrass was sent flying from the ground like fireworks, scattering in all directions.

The moment the needlegrass scattered, two figures suddenly leaped up from where the arrows had come from earlier. They evaded the two flying and swirling cold gleams. When one of the figures leaped up, he had drawn the warbow in his hands once again. At the vibration of his bowstring, an arrow pierced through the throat of a Shatu man charging toward him. Blood came raining down, splattering on the dried grass plains…

…….

Hiding in the bushes, Yan Liqiang was stunned when he saw the two people suddenly pop up in the distance.

The pair consisted of a man and a lady. The man looked quite unfamiliar to Yan Liqiang. However, he had seen the lady back when Ye Tiancheng was taken down at Sun Bingchen’s banquet. The lady had disguised herself as a maid, and she managed to inflict serious damage on Ye Tiancheng at a crucial moment.

The lady was wearing a long maid dress that day. She possessed grace, beauty, and powerful martial arts, so Yan Liqiang had a deep impression of her. She was currently dressed in form-fitting Wanderer clothes which made her appear even more valiant with great murderous intent.

Yan Liqiang even asked Liang Yijie about the identity of that lady, and he was told that she was from the Wise Ruler Sect. Apparently, she had received orders to come to Gan Province to assist Sun Bingchen in taking down Ye Tiancheng. However, Yan Liqiang did not see that lady again after the incident. Little did he expect to run into her again here today.

Up until now, Yan Liqiang didn’t even know her name.

“Junior Martial Sister, I will leave the rest to you. The spirit talisman on that old Shatu dog will not last much longer and he can only use it once. I will go claim his lowly life…!” The man who was with the lady guffawed before he charged at the old Shatu man like a bolt of lightning.

The two swirling icy gleams flew back to the Shatu warrior’s hands again. The Shatu warrior wanted to stop that man, but the lady shouted. She trod on the needlegrass fluttering in the night wind and transformed into a sword gleam that halted the Shatu warrior wearing dark red clothes in his tracks before she drew him into battle.

The lady’s gleaming sword came down like a lightning bolt while she fluttered around elegantly like a willow in the wind. The Shatu warrior suddenly found himself enveloped in her sword gleam. Yet he didn’t show any sign of weakness either. With a snarl, he started brandishing the weapon which looked like a pair of sickles in his hands. The dancing weapon swept toward the lady like squalls.

An intense battle immediately ensued.

In just a flash, the sounds of weapons clashing against each other relentlessly rang out from where the two were fighting. The dried grass around them was sliced by their weapons and scattered in all directions like a torrent of arrows…

Another Shatu man dressed in gray ran out from sidelines. He raised the scimitar in his hand and hacked at the lady.

The sound of clashing weapons stopped. The lady’s figure swayed left and right, like willows swaying gently in the winds. The sword gleam flashed across and the Shatu guard’s severed head was sent flying. Fresh blood spattered everywhere…

The death of that Shatu guard didn’t intimidate the other Shatu guards who were charging toward her. Instead, it just made them even angrier.

“KILL…!” The other Shatu guards immediately charged head-on together fearlessly, surrounding that lady. Swords and sabers slashed toward the lady…

Among the sounds of clashing weapons, the heads of Shatu men were occasionally sent flying amidst the sword gleams. Headless bodies collapsed in a heap on the grassland.

Yan Liqiang couldn’t help but break into a sweat at the sight of so many Shatu men rushing toward the lady. He even had his arrow trained on those Shatu men. Yet, it didn’t take long for him to find out that the lady possessed exceptional martial arts skills. He only stopped worrying when he saw that she still had the upper hand despite being ganged up on by a group of Shatu men…

On the other side, the man who addressed the lady as his ‘junior martial sister’ moved like a hurricane, crushing everyone in his way. In just the blink of an eye, he had eliminated three Shatu men who were obstructing him and had managed to come face to face with the old Shatu man…
