NeoRealm - Staring back into the Future

Chapter 412 - "New" Runes

Jason took a mental step back and frowned. Why would it be a surprise? He took it as a surprise because it was a direct replication, but was it all that surprising? It wasn't the first thing he had brought over after all.

While not as direct as literally scribbling out a rune from his last life, his ethos of cultivation came from there. All of that aside though, there were things that had followed him through all the worlds so far. Stuff like math and while not all the basic laws of reality match, they were similar or at least had the same base. For all Jason knew laws like gravity might be exactly the same with a few things tacked on top.

So with all that in mind, Jason tries the simplest and of course stupidest test he can. That of drawing one of the simple formations from his last life. Of course it didn't work, but it did do something. Power in the air was drawn to it for a moment and some of the lines lit up. And to be honest? Jason was very thankful the formation didn't work.

If it had, one, Jason would be incredibly annoyed that he didn't put more effort into memorizing the dang things in the past. And two, then at the very least NeoRealm might be in the same dimensional space as his previous life which would mean all kinds of nasty surprises could be waiting for him out there. After all, while it was mostly in the realm of myth, Jason was more than willing to believe there were literal sun eaters and world destroyers in his old life.

However, the fact that some parts of it did work, meant that some parts of it had a deeper connection to how realities in general worked. Like how wrapping up a bunch of copper wire and spinning it near a magnet creates an electric charge. Though once Jason analyzes what parts showed a reaction, a pattern developed.

Well, a pattern developed after a bit more testing because the first pattern was just that to react a rune had to be connected to the power collection rune or a rune that reacted. So after breaking it all down and connecting each separate basic rune he knew to the power rune, a pattern that meant something besides needing to be connected to a power source started to reveal itself.

All of the runes that worked were the ones that either drew in unspecified power or acted on other runes through unspecified power. If a rune tried to absorb fire power it wouldn't work even if Jason built a literal fire on top of it and the same happened if a rune tried to create a fire, used fire power, or created a fire. And while this did restrict the possible runes he could use, it also meant he likely knew all the runes.

After all, besides the most basic runes everything used more specific powers because it was just more efficient. Why try to force unaligned power to create a fire when you can use a tenth or even less of that power to do the same if the power is aligned to fire? Even the simplest fire starting formation used three runes. One to draw in power, another to change that power into fire power, and the third to actually create the fire. Yes, it could work without the middle rune, but even with the loss from having to convert the power you still ended up needing way more power than most places just had floating around to start the fire.

Now, these restrictions on what runes from his old life worked and didn't might seem a bit restrictive, but Jason was more than happy with the outcome. It meant that the actual manner in which power is directly used was different while at the same time telling him that his knowledge on how to manipulate power was generally correct. This was important because his entire cultivation both in NeoRealm and irl depended on this knowledge.

Sure, Jason had changed things up so it fit with the local powers, but the core of it all was based around manipulating it with his past knowledge. Until now he hadn't really put much weight in that. After all, it's like how electricity likes to flow through copper more than it does sand. The same was true here and in his last life. It didn't have to be like that though. It isn't impossible that things could have been different.

Jason had been lucky that the general rules matched at least enough for things to work. From now on though he would have to be more careful. After all, at the moment he was just at the start of his path. In his last life many places didn't even count people who were on the same level as him as being true cultivators. So one he started to touch on the really esoteric stuff who knows what might happen?

Still, all that aside it did mean that Jason had an advantage over others in the game. More so than just having a strange method of cultivating. As it was, the local standards for rituals, formations, and enchantments had been pretty set in stone for at least the entire time that the players had been around. Sure, there were instances of people tweaking things or combining bits and pieces together differently, but it was all just reusing the old runes.

What Jason had was an entirely new set of runes. Yes, some of them wouldn't be as effective as the current options, but the fact they were new meant no one would recognize them. As it was, if you let a master ritualist take a look at just about any ritual and they would eventually be able to figure it out. Maybe with some variance if you include something to obfuscate things, but they would likely know what runes were used even if not the specific layout.
