Chapter 64: Kyle

Ben chose not to press Felix after he returned to the car and sat in silence, patiently waiting for him to gather his thoughts and confirm their next move—as he was yet to see Kyle.

Felix, on the other hand, was deeply conflicted by the way Titan had spoken about Kyle, and his refrain from saying any more than his fanatic speech about Earth liberation—that got Felix thinking, "Just what the hell kind of crazy shit is the Sage Council on?"

They were trying to ditch Goddess Zemira and her world, Vastoria. But what for? That was when the tiny pieces of information Titan had provided began falling into place.

First off: The lab. Felix had clearly sensed numerous "dark creatures" inhabiting the Sunshine Park secret lab, and couldn't understand why they were creating monsters—because it was impossible to gather that many monsters from outbreaks and still stay discreet all these years. But he never actually asked himself the big question: How?

From the Doom-0 Disaster abomination—nine years ago—which was nothing like a dark creature the Witch Master would create—don't ask him how; he just knew—and had slight resemblance to humans, Felix speculated they were in fact humans—or at least had been—just like Kyle.

That should mean Kyle was in great danger, right?

But according to Titan—who Felix didn't think was lying—Kyle didn't need saving. And why should that be? Felix already knew the answer, because Kyle was the key to solving the mystery behind both the false dungeon, and the Doom-0 Disaster.

Felix knew the only thing that could lure Kyle into such a scheme and consent to the crazy experimentation, was either money—which didn't really add up, because what was the use if you won't be able to spend them as a fucking dark creature—or… power. The promise of power.

Kyle had been so obsessed with becoming a Sage candidate, that it had motivated Felix to join him on the quest and made them best of buddies. Kyle had been better than Felix all around in their private training, and he had pushed Felix to do better, always telling him how fun and glorious it would be for them to get in and be the best duo in Vastoria. He had been confident during the trials, while Felix had been nervous all through. But unluckily, he made a mistake during one of the trials that cost him a lot of points that put him below the 100-man cut off mark.

He ended up scoring 101, while Felix scored 99.

The Sage Council weren't trying to create monsters. They were trying to create superhumans—like Sages. But the failures over the years had accumulated in numerous dark creatures inhabiting the false dungeon of a lab.

The reason a Sage was sent after Kyle wasn't to get back at him for messing with Titan Capital business, but specifically for the purpose of that experiment, that raised two new questions:

One, was the subject of the experiment 'failed Sage candidates'?

Two, was Kyle really kidnapped?

A system notification flashed across Felix's vision the next moment that held the answer to 90\% of his questions.

[You have slain Doppelganger]

Felix quickly jumped out of the car to look up at the fifth floor of the Titan Capital building, which was now smoking in hot flames that were not of Felix's doing. But there, standing at the window and looking right back at him, was an older man with a clean mustache—Titan. Without the slightest hint of being roughed up by Felix just a few minutes ago.

The slain 'doppelganger' was that Titan Felix had bashed his face against the table so bad it became unrecognizable, and left to die.

Titan was not a Sage—but was a failed Sage candidate during his time. This answered the first question about the subject of the experiment. It was indeed failed Sage candidates being experimented on.

And the fact that Titan could now use supernatural abilities such as creating a doppelganger on himself and planting it in his office, proved that the Sage Council hadn't had failures throughout the years, but in fact knew what they were doing.

"Felix? Where are you going?!"

Felix heard Ben yell behind him as he sped into the burning building once more, climbed up the staircase in a flash, and arrived hurriedly at the Titan's office only to see he was long gone.

His [Spectral Resonance] skill was useless here as there were multiple people in the building trying to get out, that made it impossible to pinpoint which one he was amongst all of them.

"Fuck!" Felix yelled and angrily punched the wall, creating a dent on it.

It was clear as day now. The events surrounding Kyle's disappearance was still uncertain, but knowing Kyle well, he wouldn't appreciate it very much if Felix were to try and stop him from getting actual supernatural abilities. And for as long as Felix was concerned with clearing the false dungeon, he would be up against Kyle as well—as there was no talking him out of it.

[Chain Quest Update]: Labyrinth of Horrors

Clear the false dungeon 'Labyrinth of Horrors'

Rewards: Pending…

The quest has gone from; investigating the Bongo neighborhood, to investigating and clearing the false dungeon, to just clearing the false dungeon now.

It was all thanks to Lilith, that Felix would get to avenge his father's death after this many years. And whoever got in the way of that… must be cut down like the enemy they were.

Felix stepped out of the building amidst the amateur flames ravaging the building, and let himself into Ben's car once more.

"What happened, Felix? What's going on?" Ben couldn't help but ask in utter confusion.

Felix spared him a glance after a moment of silence, before turning to look ahead. "It's time to go home."

The battle had been made personal, and involving Ben any further would only be endangering his life.

The only thing left for him to do now, was to check his growth and new skill sets for the upcoming battle, and come up with a plan on how to evade the Sage Council and successfully infiltrate the lab—as he knew they'd be watching him now.

It was him against the Sage Council—against the world. And was Felix scared? They wish.
