Hearing this, the babies' hopes were rekindled. They all clapped their little hands, showering Lin Feng with a torrent of compliments.
"Go, Daddy!"
"Daddy, you're the best!"
Lin Feng took a few steps back for a running start. Then, with a focused expression, he sprinted forward. He moved like a gust of wind, carrying his unique scent. Zhang Yuxi, An Lan, and the four babies could only watch in amazement as Lin Feng ran straight up the tree.
He ran straight up the tree!
They were all stunned, their faces a picture of disbelief. The difference between Lin Feng's attempt and An Lan's was stark. One by one, the babies gazed up at Lin Feng in the tree, their eyes full of admiration.
"Wow, my daddy is so awesome, just like Superman!"
"Did Daddy just fly?"
"Daddy's so high up! What if he falls?"
"Daddy, be careful! Don't fall down, it will hurt!"
"Daddy, are there any baby birds?"
Lin Feng was naturally tall, and like An Lan, he had often climbed over fences and the like in his youth. Now, after undergoing the Purification and Marrow Cleansing, he was light on his feet and possessed incredible jumping ability. Climbing a tree was a piece of cake for him.
As Lin Feng neared the nest, he was surprised to find three white bird eggs inside! After recording a quick video with his phone, he slid smoothly back down the tree.
An Lan clicked her tongue. "If I'd known Director Lin was such an expert tree climber, I would've just let you do it from the start."
The babies gathered around, bombarding him with questions. Lin Feng simply played the video for them. They were thrilled. Zhang Yuxi and An Lan were also quite surprised; they hadn't actually expected there to be eggs.
On the way back, the babies were buzzing with questions. They even ran to share the video with Nan Nan, then vividly described their dad's amazing ability to scale walls.
An Lan's light-colored sweater was covered in bits of bark and had several threads pulled. When her mother saw her, she frowned. "What happened to you? Don't tell me you fell? You're a grown woman. Don't you watch where you're going?"
At that moment, the Fourth Baby piped up.
"Godmother climbed the tree!"
An Lan's mother's eyes widened. "What? You climbed a tree? Look at you! A grown woman climbing trees!"
The Second Baby added, "She tried a bunch of times but couldn't get up!"
An Lan's mother sighed in frustration. "You can't even climb a tree properly? All that effort for nothing! I remember you being a great climber when you were little!"
An Lan was rendered speechless.
「After tidying up, it was about time to head back.」
As for the small fish they had caught, the babies decided to release them back into the river.
"Alright, let's send them home," Zhang Yuxi said, touched.
They were, after all, very fond of small animals. At the babies' age, there was seldom any logic behind their preferences. If they liked something, they liked it; if they didn't, they didn't. To like something was to want to possess it—their desires were that pure.
I wonder if other babies, at around one year old, would listen to reason. Our children, however, will listen and understand if you explain things to them patiently and in detail. If they insisted on it, though, considering how much Lin Feng and I dote on them, we would certainly indulge them.
After about half an hour of packing, everyone began the journey home.
Back at the house, while the adults were busy, the babies took out their stones to play. As Lin Feng passed by, he overheard the Third Baby declare, "My stone is sparkling! Yours isn't!"
The Second Baby's rabbit-shaped stone was arguably the ugliest. Pouting, she fiddled with her stone, looking a little down. The boys, on the other hand, didn't seem to care. They were engrossed in a game of Transformers VS Monsters. The Second Baby was a girl, so seeing the Third Baby's sparkling stone probably made her feel that hers was ugly by comparison.
Lin Feng found some paints that Zhao Lizhen used for her casual art sessions. He checked the label on the box, which indicated that it could be used as children's paint.
Zhao Lizhen smiled. "When I bought it, I figured the babies might be able to use it, so I got the best quality."
Lin Feng brought the paints to the coffee table on the balcony. He beckoned to the children. "Babies, bring your stones and your little stools over here."
The babies' eyes lit up as they scurried over, carrying their small wooden stools. Looking at the paints, they were filled with curiosity and excitement.
"Daddy, are we going to paint?"
"Where did these come from?"
They all chattered at once.
Lin Feng was helping them into little aprons when he caught a glimpse of Zhang Yuxi.
"Honey?"
Zhang Yuxi turned around. Seeing they were about to start an activity, she walked over with a smile. "What are you all planning to do?"
"Want to join?" Lin Feng asked. "We're going to paint our stones!"
Of course, she wouldn't miss a chance to do an activity with the children.
Lin Feng poured out a small amount of each color. "Let's take the stones we found and paint them in our favorite colors, okay?"
"Okay!"
The babies' interest was immediately piqued, and they eagerly began to paint. Zhang Yuxi looked at her own small, round stone and had an idea.
Lin Feng leaned in. "Honey, what do you want topaint?"
"Us!" Zhang Yuxi said with a smile.
Lin Feng watched the babies' every move. The Fourth Baby was impetuous, acting with his usual swiftness. While the other children were still choosing colors, he had already grabbed the black paint. With a flurry of strokes, he covered his stone, completely absorbed in his work. The Second Baby chose the brightest colors. Lin Feng had thought she would pick red or green, but she ended up choosing a brilliant golden yellow. As for the Eldest Baby, his actual Transformer toy was already multicolored, so he decided his stone didn't need painting, feeling it was beautiful enough on its own.
Meanwhile, Zhang Yuxi used a pencil to quickly sketch a portrait of the two of them on her round stone.
Lin Feng raised an eyebrow. "Honey, have you studied art before?"
"I have," Zhang Yuxi said with a faint smile, "but I only know the basics. It's been years since I last drew, but it feels good. I'm not too rusty."
"Alright, you all carry on," Lin Feng said, standing up. "I'll go make dinner."
Zhang Yuxi tugged his arm. "No, stay with us. Let's do this together, okay?" She cherished these moments with her family of six. At this moment, she wanted Lin Feng to be part of it too. "Honey, how about I paint your portrait, and you paint mine?"
Lin Feng considered it. "Alright! But I'm warning you, I'm not very good at painting!"
Zhang Yuxi waved a dismissive hand. "It's fine, just paint whatever you like..." She colored with swift, sure strokes, and a lifelike image of Lin Feng emerged on the stone. "Honey, your turn!"
Lin Feng, after all, had his Skills. While his basic proficiency couldn't match Zhang Yuxi's artistry, it was good enough that he didn't make a complete mess.
"Wow, honey, not bad!" Zhang Yuxi said, surprised. "You're very bold with your color choices." She rested her chin in her hand. "I'll ask Dad to make a box and a stand for this later so we can display it. Years from now, when we look at it again, it'll be filled with so many memories."
Lin Feng agreed.
The Third Baby came over to admire their work. "Mommy and Daddy, your painting is so pretty! It looks real!"
Zhang Yuxi gave her a kiss.
Soon, the babies' "masterpieces" were complete. In the eyes of the adults, they were just a jumble of scribbles and random splotches. But to the babies, they were exquisite works of art. The adults, of course, praised and encouraged them, hoping they would continue to explore their creativity.
Afterward, Zhang Yuxi took the children to wash their hands while Lin Feng went to make dinner.
Once they were all cleaned up, the babies grabbed their stones and ran to show their grandparents.
"Wonderful!" Zhao Lizhen showered them with praise. "Every one of them is painted so beautifully! Oh, who knows, maybe you'll all be little artists one day!"
Zhang Fuyong came over to take a look. "What is all this..." He was about to say "junk" but was cut off by Zhao Lizhen.
"The babies painted these. Look," she said, shooting Zhang Fuyong a sharp glare.
Realizing his misstep, Zhang Fuyong quickly changed his tune. "Very good, very good! They're all excellent!" He was most pleased with the Third Baby's golden apple. Its color was uniform, making it easy to see what it was. But they were only a year and a half old, and they were his own grandchildren, so he didn't have any real expectations.
"Dinner's ready!"
The babies led the way to the dining room, with Zhang Fuyong and Zhao Lizhen following behind. Zhao Lizhen shot him another glare.
Zhang Fuyong quickly backpedaled. "I didn't realize they painted them! I'll be more careful with my words next time!"
"Just think before you speak," Zhao Lizhen said coolly.
"I know, I know!" Zhang Fuyong hastily agreed.
