The Smiling Death

Chapter 73: Last Fight (2)

The three of them walked through the blood-soaked street in silence.

Every step splashed in crimson, echoing faintly in the dead stillness of the town. The air itself felt heavier now thick, suffocating, and charged with something unseen.

Amon noticed something different.

'Why are there no bodies near the square? I remember they threw out the road,' Amon thought in confusion. There was something not right.

Amon frowned, his instincts screaming a warning.

Selena's expression hardened, while Jareth raised his shield slightly, the faint shimmer of mana flickering across its surface.

"That presence…" Selena whispered.

"It's coming from the square."

Amon nodded. "Yeah… I can feel it too."

Even though Amon was the weakest, every person can sense danger. Something dreadful. It's human instinct.

Each step forward made the pressure stronger. The closer they got, the more the air distorted, as if reality itself were trembling.

A stench of decay and blood rolled over them, clawing into their noses and throats until they almost gagged.

Then they turned the corner.

And froze.

In the center of the square stood something that should not exist. Amon hadn't seen this before.

Headless corpses dozens of them were moving. Twisting. Melting. Their flesh bubbled like molten wax, merging together into a single, grotesque mass.

Hands clawed at each other, silently from within the tangle of flesh. They were trying to merge yet they didn't. Still they remained attached.

From between the bodies, long, slick black tentacles burst out, writhing like serpents. They were destroying the buildings and houses nearby.

They cracked against the ground, leaving black marks where they touched, dripping a tar-like ooze that hissed when it met stone. The tar-like ooze was dark and left a disgusting smell.

Amon felt bile rise in his throat. "What… the hell…" he muttered.

His mouth dried. He had never seen something like this dreadful, evil, and disgusting. His feet froze.

The abomination pulsed once—a wet, trembling sound.

And then, slowly, something rose from the top of it.

A woman's upper body pale skin stretched unnaturally, crimson liquid sliding down her arms. Her hair was burgundy, dark and matted with blood, yet unmistakable.

Her smile was the same as before.

The same woman who had killed Vixra.

Amon recognized her. But the moment his eyes fell on her a chill ran down his spine.

'She's dangerous! Far more dangerous than before. What had she become!' Amon couldn't understand what was going on.

He had come here to kill her only to meet such a disturbing sight.

She tilted her head slightly, her red eyes glowing faintly as the flesh beneath her writhed and consumed another corpse, pulling it in with a sickening slurp.

"Hehehe…" her laughter echoed across the square—sweet, melodic, and utterly wrong.

"They just… don't stop screaming… even after they die, their souls keep screaming hehehe."

The group hid behind a nearby wall and then entered an empty house.

The abomination was too focused on consuming dead bodies, not caring about its surroundings.

Amon's grip tightened around his revolver until his knuckles turned white. His heart pounded furiously, rage bubbling beneath his skin.

Jareth stepped forward, shield raised. "What… is that thing?"

Selena's expression darkened, her hand already on her sword.

"A monster wearing a woman's face. She is merging all corpses and becoming something vile. Dangerous."

The creature's laughter grew louder a haunting, unholy chorus that made even the air tremble.

And from its body, the tentacles began to rise again.

"Can we even kill that thing?" Jareth asked. For the first time his tone was doubtful. His blue eyes fell on Selena.

"Can we kill it? Don't know... but we don't have much choice. Either hide somewhere until help comes, wishing that this thing won't devour us... or fight it and kill it," Selena said with her usual demeanor.

She turned toward Amon. Her blood-red eyes shone with intensity. Ready to kill.

"Amon... you said before that Rick was telling you about sacrificing people for their souls, right? To devour them by some unknown being they worshiped?" Selena asked.

Amon remained silent for a while, reminiscing the conversation with Rick.

"Yes. It was about sacrificing the souls of these people for their Lady."

Selena just nodded.

Jareth narrowed his eyes. The doubt he had felt slowly vanished.

"So you mean... it's not enough to kill them... but even take their souls and devour them?" Jareth commented. His fist clenched tightly and he greeted his teeth. Anger surged in him.

"I... I always wanted to be an aspiring knight... but all I can do is see people die... get their souls used for vile being."

He looked at Amon and Selena and said, "No. I cannot accept this anymore. We will kill that thing... we will avenge our friend... Since we were not able to save anyone... at least let us free their souls. That's the very least we should do."

Amon looked at Jareth, stunned. This was the first time Jareth spoke this much.

'He sure has a knight's heart. Still good he doesn't talk too much or he might start lecturing about virtues.' A smile formed on Amon's face.

Selena also raised her lips in a small, satisfied smile. "Well said, Jareth. We will kill it."

"Yeah, I agree with you, my knight! We will kill or be killed," Amon said with a huge grin.

"Get killed? Don't talk nonsense. I am princess do you even know what will happen if I die? My mother will go crazy," Selena replied with a disapproving expression.

"We won't die. We will survive this," she continued.

Jareth exhaled deeply and smiled at them.

"Oh, I nearly forgot you were a princess, president! And I know how dangerous the empress is," Amon said, his face dreadful at the thought of a mad and vengeful empress.

Selena frowned. "Oi, you are thinking something rude about my mother, aren't you? You really have guts."

'What? Did she read my mind or something?' Amon shook his head.

"How could I dare even think such a rude thing about our lovely empress. No way!" Amon declared, like a loyal subject.

Selena smiled. "Good to see you in your usual self, Amon."

Even though they were near a vile and evil monster an unknown creature they felt a little relieved and gained confidence from their small talk.

"Let's kill that thing now!" she declared.

Amon took out his sword in his right hand while Jareth readied his shield and sword.
