Smack!
One of the police officers slammed the folder in his hands onto the table, glaring angrily as he said, "Still playing dumb? What's going on with the mutated vegetables at your villa?"
"There are no mutated vegetables in my villa. How would I know what's going on?" Dealing with this kind of deliberate framing and entrapment, Ling Zhenfei was still very experienced.
"Still denying it? Now that people have died from it, you still won't admit it? If we didn't have evidence, do you think we'd arrest you?"
"Oh, you two have evidence? Well, where is it then? Show me," Ling Zhenfei actually hoped they would produce some evidence.
Both officers were clearly taken aback; they obviously had no evidence and were merely trying to scare Ling Zhenfei.
"Stop talking nonsense. If we didn't have evidence, why would we arrest you?"
"You're arresting me, and how should I know why? Maybe just to make me stay in the station for a day, am I right?"
The remark hit home for both officers. Due to their guilty conscience, their faces slightly reddened, and one of them, infuriated, slammed his hand on the table and stood up.
"Kid, I see you dare to slander the police. It looks like you're tired of living. I'm the chief here, this station is as good as my own father's place, and what if I purposely keep you here for a day? Even if I break your legs today, no one would dare to do anything."
"Go ahead, break my legs. We're in a society governed by law, and if you dare, I'll file a complaint against you," Ling Zhenfei challenged.
The two officers burst out laughing, as if Ling Zhenfei had just told a huge joke. They were the chiefs; any complaints would ultimately be directed to them.
"Let me be honest with you, kid. We were paid to detain you for twenty-four hours. We intended to release you after that, but it seems that unless we teach you a lesson, you'll never learn how institutions here operate," one explained.
Both officers had already turned off the interrogation camera and even turned off the surveillance in this room when they arrived. Abusing and injuring detainees were nothing new for them; they were experienced in this.
Tonight, the two officers intended to fall back on their usual practices, but this time they had picked the wrong person—Ling Zhenfei was no ordinary individual.
With ease, the officers picked up their batons, made of rubber, which, though somewhat flexible, were hard enough to cause internal injuries without leaving marks over clothes. They typically used these to discipline detainees.
"I am a honored citizen, a city hero. If you hit me, aren't you afraid of the consequences from higher up?" Ling Zhenfei pretended to be frightened as he questioned the two officers.
"Honored citizen my ass, even if Chief Guo himself showed up, I wouldn't hesitate to strike," they raised their rubber batons, ready to strike.
"Let's see who dares to strike me!"
The arrogance of the officers hadn't yet subsided when they heard someone shouting from outside. Then, the interrogation room door was kicked open.
All three people in the room turned towards the door, only to see Han Lian and Police Chief Guo Qing'an standing at the entrance—Chief Guo with his eyes wide and furious, apparently the one who had kicked the door open.
Guo Qing'an and Han Lian had actually arrived quite early but did not enter, merely listening at the door. The two arrogant and domineering police officers inside did not hear the noise outside, but this did not escape Ling Zhenfei's ears; he had even seen Director Guo and Han Lian with his "Perspective Eye". He also noticed Director Guo attempting to kick the door open several times, only to be held back by Han Lian.
Unbelievably, the two police officers kept talking more and more, eventually confessing to accepting bribes and abusing their authority to detain Ling Zhenfei, even daring to use violence unlawfully and declaring they would hit even if the Director came. By then, Director Guo could no longer stand idly by. With one kick, he burst through the door.
When the two police officers saw Guo Qing'an, they were completely stunned. Qinghe Police Station was a small place, and Director Guo wouldn't usually come during the day, let alone so late at night. Obviously, he had heard everything they had just said based on his facial expression.
Having said so much just now, both men felt utterly weak at this point.
"Director, what brings you here? This young man was disrespecting the police, and we were just about to discipline him,"
One police officer, looking savvier than the other, still knew to test the Director's reaction at that time.
"Hmph!"
Director Guo snorted coldly, then pointed to the CCTV camera overhead. When the two officers looked up and saw it, they nearly fainted. The camera they had switched off was somehow recording again, glowing brightly.
Unlike other cameras, the one in the interrogation room also recorded audio, capturing everything they had just said.
"Incredible, the police station's chief and deputy chief take bribes together, apply illegal torture, what are you trying to do, force confessions? You're an embarrassment. I see your careers are over," Director Guo declared.
"Director, we've made mistakes, please, give us another chance. We'll confess everything, begging for your leniency," they pleaded.
The brash chief and deputy now collapsed on the floor in fright; reaching their positions had not been easy, and now they were gone in an instant. A thorough investigation would surely land them in prison.
"Lock up these two, investigate their corrupt dealings thoroughly, and notify everyone in their station to come in for work," Director Guo commanded furiously.
A few people from outside walked in and dragged the two policemen away, and the Director himself came forward to unlock Ling Zhenfei's handcuffs, apologizing continuously. Ling Zhenfei had helped the Director before; the two were old acquaintances.
"No need for formalities, Director, I indeed need your help with something this time," Ling Zhenfei said.
Guo Qing'an, of course, knew what Ling Zhenfei was referring to, as Han Lian had already informed him about the details.
"Even if you hadn't asked, we would still seek your help. Actually, it's not just your help; we've had our eyes on Tianhe Group for a while. They've committed many misdeeds, but unfortunately, there has always been insufficient evidence. Plus, the people behind them are influential, so we haven't touched them yet. Who could have expected this to develop now?"
Guo Qing'an's words were very sincere, and Ling Zhenfei could tell he wasn't being deceptive.
"Director Guo, I have one question for you. If the evidence is solid, would you dare move against Tianhe Group?"
Guo Qing'an paused before answering Ling Zhenfei, "How could you even ask that? I, Guo Qing'an, am responsible for Binyang's safety. With such a malicious company around, seriously disrupting Binyang's peace, I would definitely take action if there's evidence."
"Director Guo, we've had a long relationship, and it's not that I don't trust you; I just fear that you might hesitate to tackle them because of the influence behind Tianhe Group. Since you've put it this way, I'll handle the evidence. As long as you step in and take down Tianhe Group when the time comes, you would be doing me a huge favor, and it will be a win-win situation."
