On Saturday evening, Lin Feng drove, taking Wang Zikai and the others from his dorm straight to a roadside barbecue stall near Jiangzhou University. The last time their dorm had a dinner party, it was an "everyone pays their own way" deal. This time, Lin Feng planned to treat his dorm mates. After this, tomorrow, he would be moving out to live with Ning Aoxue and Su Zi—two beauties.
The barbecue stall was next to a construction site. The area around it was a so-called "Entertainment Street," with three or four barbecue stalls set up. After 9 p.m., more people would arrive for late-night snacks, creating a lively and somewhat unruly mix.
After parking the car, Lin Feng ordered a grilled fish and a pot of snails, then let Wang Zikai and the others pick out some barbecue items. The four of them ordered a case of cold beer and sat down at a simple roadside table to drink.
Lin Feng told his roommates about his plan to move out. Wang Zikai was the first to react, exclaiming, "Damn! You're moving in with your girlfriend in your freshman year? Awesome! I thought you were some kind of saint. Hehe, turns out you're just as much of a suave scoundrel as I am..."
"I just said I was moving out; I never said it was with my girlfriend. Zikai, your imagination is running wild," Lin Feng said, clinking glasses with everyone before downing his beer in one gulp.
"You're moving out... and not with your girlfriend? Damn, are you moving in with some other woman? Keeping a beauty hidden away?" Zhong Jialiang joked.
Lin Feng's nerves tensed. Damn it, how does Zhong Jialiang know who I'm moving out with? It's like he's a mind-reader!
But, of course, Lin Feng wouldn't admit it even if beaten. "Can your thoughts get any dirtier?" He shot his three roommates a speechless look.
Wang Zikai laughed. "Thanks for the reminder. Hehe, if you're not moving out to live with a girl, then it must be with guys, right? Whoa, talk about an acquired taste... Lin Feng, you're not actually into that 'dropping the soap' stuff, are you?"
It was usually Lin Feng who teased others, but now he was the one getting teased. His roommates were truly a bunch of oddballs!
Outnumbered, Lin Feng couldn't fend off the verbal assault from Wang Zikai and the other two. So, he changed tactics and started challenging them to drinking contests.
"Boss, bring us a case of cold beer!"
Sitting not far from Lin Feng's table, a young man with dyed yellow hair, wearing clogs, and a cigarette dangling from his lips, yelled at the barbecue stall owner. Beside this Clogs Yellow Hair sat three other similarly yellow-haired youths, their hair dyed various flashy colors; they all looked like typical street punks.
"Fellas, I'm sorry," the stall owner, a man in his forties, said to Clogs Yellow Hair with an apologetic smile. "We still have beer, but we're all out of the cold ones. Please understand, the fridge is only so big, and everyone wants cold beer. You came a bit late... How about some regular ones?"
"Damn it! On a hot day like this, I'll feel sick if I don't drink cold beer! I want cold beer! Check everywhere and get us a case, I don't care!" Clogs Yellow Hair roared.
The barbecue owner looked troubled. "Fellas, we really don't have any more."
"Cut the crap! Believe it or not, I'll smash your stall!" Fatty Yellow Hair, one of the group, yelled arrogantly at the stall owner.
The barbecue owner froze, his face clearly showing his awkwardness. He couldn't afford to offend these punks, but he truly was out of cold beer.
Helplessly, he spread his hands, trying to think of a solution. His gaze swept around and landed on the case of beer next to Lin Feng's table—the last case of cold beer, with only four bottles opened.
He had no choice. To avoid offending the punks, the barbecue owner walked over to Lin Feng's table. "Young men," he said, "could we discuss something? That case of cold beer you have, could you possibly exchange it? You heard those fellas over there; they want cold beer. Could you be understanding? How about this, I'll give you two plates of boiled peanuts, on the house."
Wang Zikai, Yang Ming, and Zhong Jialiang turned to look at the four punks sitting near them. A shiver went down their spines; students generally didn't dare to provoke such people. Wang Zikai looked at Lin Feng. "Lin Feng, maybe we should..."
Lin Feng immediately shook his head. He looked at the stall owner and said, "Sorry, Boss, we bought this case of cold beer first. It's hot lately, and we also want to drink cold beer. Everything should be first come, first served, right? They can't just snatch our beer from us."
The stall owner looked even more troubled. "Young man, those guys are local thugs. Small businesses like ours can't afford to offend people like that. Could you please do me a favor? I'd really appreciate it."
"Boss, this isn't about doing a favor or not. This is a matter of social decency. We can't encourage such arrogant behavior, can we? How about this: you go tell them the truth. Say that we're unwilling to exchange our cold beer. If they insist on having cold beer, they can try another stall."
Seeing that Lin Feng was adamant about not exchanging the beer, the stall owner was caught in a difficult position. But he had no choice. He had to brace himself and go over to the punks' table, where he told them something, probably relaying Lin Feng's words.
"Damn it, who the hell is being so stubborn!"
Hearing this, the punks immediately stood up. All four of them fixed their gazes on Lin Feng's table.
"Lin Feng, what do we do now? We can't afford to offend these kinds of people! If we'd known, we would've just given them the beer. If they come over here, we'll be in trouble!" Wang Zikai started to panic as he saw the four yellow-haired youths approaching.
Yang Ming and Zhong Jialiang also looked at Lin Feng anxiously, at a loss for what to do.
Lin Feng said, "Some people in society get a tattoo and think they're tough guys; they dye their hair and think they're the big boss. Sometimes, we can't feed their arrogance. Otherwise, what will become of social conduct? Besides, it's our right not to exchange our beer. What can they do? Are they going to start a fight?"
"That's right, I *am* looking to fight!"
Just as Lin Feng finished speaking, one of the yellow-haired punks was already standing behind him, shouting angrily.
"You little brats!" Clogs Yellow Hair sneered at Lin Feng. "If you know what's good for you, hand over the beer and apologize. Otherwise, I'll teach you a lesson tonight on behalf of your fathers!"
Seeing the punks surrounding them, Wang Zikai and the others tensed up, too scared to say a word. All their eyes were on Lin Feng.
Lin Feng took a leisurely sip of his beer. Then, he stood up, looked coldly at Clogs Yellow Hair, and said, "So? We're not exchanging the beer. You want to beat us up and rob us of our beer?"
