Lin Feng was quite speechless, not knowing how Lu Pengju had muddled his way into becoming an instructor for freshmen training at Jiangzhou University.
Standing among hundreds of freshmen, Lu Pengju couldn't spot him, so Lin Feng saw no reason to greet his apprentice.
"Hello everyone. I am Lu Pengju, the chief instructor for this military training. Henceforth, I will be in charge of the training on the fourth sports ground. I hope for pleasant cooperation with everyone!"
Applause rang out.
"Of course, you might not yet be aware of how strenuous military training can be. But, starting today, we will let you experience the life of a real soldier in a military camp. I hope everyone cooperates well, works together, and strives for fruitful cooperation during these next twenty-odd days of training."
Another round of applause ensued.
"Having said that, if any student fails to cooperate with us, I will deal with it according to military regulations and university rules. Uncooperative students will definitely live to regret it! Enough talk! Each platoon, to your posts! Head to your designated training areas!"
Lu Pengju stood at the forefront, speaking with simple clarity and a commanding presence through the loudspeaker. Many female students whispered amongst themselves, and some even expressed their admiration for the masculine Lu Pengju in hushed voices.
Lin Feng was speechless upon hearing this. After his special assignment with the Falcon Special Agents, this young man had evidently matured considerably, particularly in the confidence he exuded—something he had sorely lacked in the past.
However, Lin Feng couldn't understand how Lu Pengju had ended up as an instructor here. Of course, given his abilities, he was more than qualified for the role; it was arguably an underutilization of his skills.
After Lu Pengju finished speaking, each platoon leader led their unit to the designated training area and began the pre-training briefing.
The leader of Lin Feng's fourth platoon was a dark-skinned young man in his early twenties, with an arrogant air and a look of smug self-satisfaction.
"Hello everyone, my name is Liang Jun. From now on, I'll be your fourth platoon leader. All your training tasks will be guided and directed by me. I expect every one of you lads to buck up and not piss me off. If you upset me, I'll make your lives even more miserable! Understand?"
When he finished speaking and saw no reaction from the students before him, he felt somewhat awkward and shouted, "When I speak, you must respond! I'll ask again: do you understand what I just said?"
"Understood!"
This time, all the students replied in unison. After all, they had just entered university from high school, and each of them held a certain awe and respect for teachers and instructors, not daring to talk back.
"I heard from the counselor that each platoon has an appointed deputy platoon leader. Who is the deputy platoon leader of the fourth platoon?"
"Reporting to the instructor, I am!"
Li Zhi, with a slightly sleazy demeanor, stood up from the first rank and said, "Reporting to the instructor, I am Li Zhi, the deputy platoon leader of the fourth platoon."
Liang Jun looked Li Zhi up and down, then frowned and said, "You're the deputy platoon leader? Heh, you do seem quite sturdily built. Back in line!"
Li Zhi returned to the line. Then Liang Jun said solemnly, "Today we begin our first exercise: drill commands! Attention, at ease, right face, left face, about face, forward march! You must all understand these basic commands and execute them correctly. Now, I will demonstrate each one for you."
After speaking, Liang Jun, with an air of great importance, recited the commands while demonstrating the movements. When he finished, he turned to the students and asked, "Well? Was my form not standard? If it was standard, why is there no applause?"
CLAP, CLAP, CLAP...
Then, the students reluctantly applauded.
Standing in the ranks, Lin Feng remained motionless. Of course, he wasn't childish enough to applaud Liang Jun. He felt quite exasperated. Damn it, such rudimentary drills performed with such ostentation, and he still expects applause? This dark-skinned instructor doesn't seem very skilled, but he's certainly an expert at bragging and showing off.
"Very good. You all saw my movements just now, right? Alright, now all of you will practice according to the standard movements I just demonstrated. Listen for the commands!"
"Attention!"
"Left face!"
Liang Jun began to shout commands in a repetitive, mixed sequence. Although these movements were very simple, some students were naturally slower to react and performed them incorrectly.
Liang Jun then began to correct and scold them, "You can't even perform such simple movements? I really don't know how you lot managed to get into Jiangzhou University! Did you even take an IQ test? I doubt you'd even pass! Watch me!"
Then, he would perform another flashy demonstration. Wang Zikai felt sick watching him and whispered to Lin Feng, "Lin Feng, this instructor is so fucking pretentious!"
Lin Feng chuckled. "Who cares? Let's just see how long he can keep up this act."
Lin Feng, of course, had no problem performing these movements. He wasn't particularly bothered; as long as this instructor, Liang Jun, didn't go out of his way to trouble him, he'd maintain a live-and-let-live attitude and just get through this military training.
Over the following days, the training intensity gradually increased. After the most basic drill command training, other exercises such as standing at military attention, performing squats, and practicing hat removal were also introduced.
These movements proved challenging for the students; some even struggled with marching in step, ending up with their arms and legs on the same side moving in unison, much to the amusement of others who roared with laughter.
Instructors would correct and punish students who performed movements incorrectly. Punishments included running a lap around the sports field, doing thirty push-ups, or holding a squat for half an hour—many students couldn't endure it.
Some hot-tempered students, when provoked, would talk back and defy the instructors. However, they usually ended up suffering for it. After all, compared to well-trained instructors, mere students were essentially like a mantis trying to stop a chariot—overestimating their own strength.
The first week of training passed without incident. By the second week, more students in the fourth platoon were performing the movements incorrectly. Liang Jun showed no leniency, punishing them directly. It was as if he derived some thrill from it, leaving the students fuming but helpless to voice their anger.
A tall student from the north couldn't take it anymore and cursed at Liang Jun a few times. This led to a scuffle, and Liang Jun, with a single move, pinned the tall student to the ground, rendering him immobile. Only after the student admitted defeat, begged for mercy, and promised to behave did Liang Jun release him.
From then on, no one dared to cross Liang Jun again.
"You there! Can't even handle squatting for twenty minutes? Think squatting isn't challenging enough? How about you do fifty push-ups first, then squat! You, step out of the line!"
Finally, during a squatting drill, Wang Zikai, who was feeling a bit under the weather which made his balance unsteady, could no longer hold the position and collapsed to the ground, immediately drawing Liang Jun's attention.
