Super Soldier in Campus

Chapter 146: Betting_1

"Son, are you okay?"

Early the next morning, in this new place, Lin Feng was still half-asleep when he answered a call. Surprisingly, it was from his mother, Jiang Xiuyun.

"Mom, I'm fine. How did you get my number?" Lin Feng quickly sat up in bed.

"I went to your base, and your Instructor Zhang Chu gave me your contact information. I'm calling from his phone; he's right here next to me. Son, how's training going? Are you holding up okay? You're not suffering, are you?" Jiang Xiuyun asked, her voice thick with emotion.

Hearing his mother's voice warmed Lin Feng's heart. He said, "Mom, everything's fine here, really. I'm adapting well to this life, so please don't worry. You and Dad need to take care of yourselves."

Lin Feng chatted with Jiang Xiuyun for a bit. He knew she wasn't aware he was working undercover in a drug trafficking group. Since Zhang Chu hadn't told her, Lin Feng didn't want to say anything either and cause her more worry.

"I'm calling mainly to ask you about your college application," Jiang Xiuyun continued. "When it was time to submit it, your dad put down Jiangzhou University because you were in training and we couldn't reach you. But I've been thinking, choosing a college is such a big decision, we really should get your opinion."

"So, what do you and Dad think?" Lin Feng asked.

"Well, your dad hopes you'll go to Jiangzhou University, so he went ahead and filled it in for you. I think Jiangzhou University is great too. It's one of the top universities in the country, and it's close to home, so you could visit often..."

"Alright then, Jiangzhou University it is."

Lin Feng hadn't really given much thought to which university to apply for. In his view, as long as one was capable, any university would do. Besides, his dad had already submitted the application for Jiangzhou University. It couldn't be changed now, so there was no point discussing it further.

"Son, are you sure that's what you want? If you don't want to go to Jiangzhou University, I can ask your dad to pull some strings and change it. Your scores are high, so it shouldn't be a problem to make adjustments," Jiang Xiuyun said, worried Lin Feng had only agreed to please them.

"Jiangzhou University is great, Mom. I like it too. No need to change anything," Lin Feng reassured her.

"Okay, that's good... Son, Instructor Zhang Chu mentioned you're training out of town. You must take good care of yourself there... Oh, by the way, when we were filling out the application, a girl came to our house."

"Who?" Lin Feng asked, curious.

"She said she was your classmate. Her name is Tang Rou."

"Tang Rou?" An image of his gentle and beautiful deskmate immediately surfaced in Lin Feng's mind.

Didn't Tang Rou go abroad? Why would she come to my house looking for me?

Curious, Lin Feng asked, "So... what did Tang Rou want when she came looking for me?"

"Since you weren't home, she just asked which university you'd applied to."

"What did you tell her?"

"I told her you'd applied to Jiangzhou University, of course."

"And then?"

"Then she left... Son, that girl is very pretty, speaks very softly, and seems quite nice. Hehe, what's your relationship with her?"

Here it comes... Lin Feng groaned internally. He knew his mom would ask this, and suddenly felt a huge weight on his shoulders.

"Um, it's nothing... nothing much. She's just a classmate. We got along well in class; we were even deskmates," Lin Feng explained.

"Hehe, is that so?" Jiang Xiuyun's chuckle was tinged with amusement. "By the way, how are things with that 'girlfriend' of yours, Cao Ying? She's a nice girl too. Sigh, I never noticed before, but our son seems to be quite popular with the ladies..."

Hearing Jiang Xiuyun say this, Lin Feng was even more at a loss for words.

"Mom, Cao Ying really is just my English teacher. I haven't seen her since graduation..."

Imagining Cao Ying pouting cutely when she was angry, Lin Feng couldn't help but smile. She'll probably act this way towards other boys at school too, won't she? As this thought crossed his mind, a peculiar feeling stirred within him.

After hanging up with his mom, it was almost half-past eight in the morning.

Work started at nine, so Lin Feng quickly brushed his teeth, washed his face, changed into his security guard uniform, grabbed a bread roll to eat on the way, and hailed a taxi to the Emperor Dragon Group headquarters.

He wasn't late. Lin Feng and all the new recruits gathered in the Emperor Dragon Group's parking lot.

The security team captain was a middle-aged man named Guo Yang, who seemed quite amiable. "Welcome, everyone, to the Emperor Dragon Group family," he said. "From now on, we're colleagues. My name is Guo Yang, and I hope we can all work together harmoniously."

Then, Guo Yang assigned specific tasks and duties.

Lin Feng and another newcomer, Li Bing, were assigned to patrol duty. This involved patrolling the office building and, if they encountered thieves or anyone causing trouble for the group, they were to stop them and report it immediately.

The job sounded simple but was actually quite physically demanding. The Emperor Dragon Building had over thirty floors, and patrolling each one was rather monotonous. If an incident occurred and they failed to arrive at the scene promptly, they, as patrolling security, would be held responsible. The consequences ranged from a pay cut to, in serious cases, dismissal.

After getting to know Li Bing a little, they decided to patrol separately and keep in touch via walkie-talkies if anything came up.

This was what Lin Feng had planned anyway. Being new to the Emperor Dragon Group, his first priority was to familiarize himself with all the locations and departments. It would make things much more convenient for future operations.

"Are you the new security guard?"

Just as Lin Feng was about to start familiarizing himself with the layout, beginning with the lobby, a clear, pleasant voice called out from the front desk.

Lin Feng turned around. Standing before him was a slim girl in a blouse, around eighteen or nineteen years old. She had a fresh, lovely face and, judging by her attire, seemed to be one of the company's receptionists.

"Yes, I am. My name is Lin Feng. Nice to meet you," Lin Feng said with a smile, nodding at the girl who had approached him.

"My name is Liu Fei'er. Nice to meet you too! I'm a receptionist here. So, we're colleagues now. Um, should we exchange phone numbers? It'd be easier to stay in touch that way, right?"

Whoa, beautiful women are so direct these days!?

They had barely exchanged three sentences, and this stunningly beautiful woman was already asking to exchange phone numbers. Lin Feng felt rather flattered. Since when did I become so popular?

It wasn't Lin Feng's style to turn down a beautiful woman asking for his number. He promptly exchanged numbers with Liu Fei'er and said with a smile, "If you ever need any help in the future, don't hesitate to ask."

"Thank you!" Liu Fei'er blushed, then nodded. "See you later," she said, before returning to the front desk.

Getting hit on by a beauty really brightens your day... Lin Feng hummed a little tune as he continued his patrol.

After Lin Feng had walked away, Liu Fei'er, still at the front desk, turned to her colleague Li Min. "Min'er," she said, "how about that? I got his number! You're treating me to dinner tonight, and no backing out!"

Liu Fei'er waved her phone, which now held Lin Feng's number, a charming smile on her face. They had made a bet earlier: Li Min had wagered that Liu Fei'er wouldn't be able to get Lin Feng's phone number.

"Tch, I guess you're good..." Li Min conceded, then teased, "But seriously, that new security guard is really handsome. Fei'er, now that you have his number, you'd better make your move fast before someone else snatches him up! Heehee!"
