The Frugal Mage

Chapter 136: The Archive

Rayven thought for a moment before he finally nodded to himself.

"Eterna Mayonnaise… simple, memorable, and tied to my other brand…" he murmured. "Yeah, that'll do."

He stood up and left the storage room, heading toward the small office beside the counter. Inside, Gene was already sorting through parchment sheets, supplier records, payment receipts, and delivery schedules. The man looked up as Rayven entered.

"Ah, boss! I heard that someone from the Auction Hall was sent to you. Did you auction off something? Did it go well?"

Rayven gave a brief nod. "Better than expected. Listen, Gene… I'm finalizing the new product line. I've decided on a name."

Gene tilted his head curiously. "Oh? That cream… You call it meiyo or something, right? What are we calling it?"

"Eterna Mayonnaise."

The man smiled slightly. "Eterna… Mayonnaise? Are you planning to build Eterna Empire or something? What does that even mean?"

"Haha… Don't think too much for now… It'll make sense soon," Rayven replied with a small grin. "Now, I need you to find someone who can handle the label we'll use on each glass jar. Hmm… Preferably, a craftsman or workshop that can make decent designs. Something elegant but affordable. We'll be using standard glass jars for packaging."

Gene immediately went to work and started scribbling notes as Rayven continued… He was earning more than five times what he should be earning, so there was no way he would be lazy on this.

"Also, coordinate with a bakery nearby, preferably one with soft white bread, not those coarse tavern loaves. I'll need them to supply slices for tasting samples during the product launch."

Gene already knew about this, but he couldn't help but hesitate after hearing it again.

"Tasting… samples?"

He just felt that it was too wasteful to have those given for free. They were simply too precious in his eyes.

Although he was aware of how cheap it really was to make it, he just couldn't help but have second thoughts about this idea.

However, he was also aware that Rayven was a great businessman, and he must trust the man.

"Yes…" Rayven said. He knew what Gene was thinking, but he didn't mind it at all.

The concept of free samples here was still quite new…

"We're not just going to sell mayonnaise outright. Most people here have no idea what it even is. We'll need to show them how it can be used… as a spread, as a dip, even as a cooking ingredient."

Gene's expression brightened a little as he started to understand.

"Ah, so you mean a demonstration sale. I've seen spice traders do something similar, letting customers taste stew with their seasonings."

"Exactly…" Rayven replied. "But we'll do it better. We'll prepare a few sample dishes."

He grabbed his own fountain pen with his etched name and began jotting rough ideas on parchment.

"One… Small slices of bread with pure mayonnaise. Two… Boiled egg halves topped with it. And three… Thin vegetable slices, like carrots or cucumber, are served with a bit of mayo for dipping. Nothing too fancy, just enough to show its flavor versatility."

Gene nodded, impressed. "That's… actually quite clever. Free food draws a crowd."

Rayven smirked. "It always does. Once they taste it, they'll want to buy a jar before leaving. Humans are predictable that way… Especially merchants and nobles looking for something new to brag about at dinner."

Gene chuckled lightly. "You're really planning this out like a noble's marketing bureau."

"I'm just using what works…" Rayven said, tapping the parchment. "We'll schedule the opening three days after the jars arrive. I want the shop clean, banners up, and samples ready by then."

"Understood. I'll handle the coordination with the baker and the glassworker immediately."

"Good. And one more thing…" Rayven added as Gene began to pack up his documents. "When you negotiate the price with the bakery, do not haggle with them. They're not earning a lot in their business. If the price they gave is within the budget, just give it to them. It'll make them root for our success."

Rayven said as he also wanted to ensure that they'll get good quality bread.

Gene grinned. "Ah, you really know how it works… I'll keep it in mind, boss."

"That's the point… But if it's not related to business, you can always haggle as much as you can." Rayven said calmly, as he knew that he could trust Gene.

"Frugality isn't about being stingy, it's about being efficient."

Gene laughed as he bowed slightly. "Then I'll be efficient too. Consider it done."

As the man left to make arrangements, Rayven felt satisfied.

He considered for a moment if he had forgotten something, but it seemed that everything was already prepared…

The new business was coming together faster than expected.

The Eterna Mayonnaise Project would soon be his second major income stream, one that required no mana, no spells, and no risky adventures.

Just effort, timing, and understanding of what people wanted before they even realized it themselves.

"Money well spent…" he muttered. "Once this kicks off, I'll have enough to prepare for the real challenge."

***

The next morning, Rayven left the shop early, letting Gene handle the deliveries and supplier visits.

He wore a simple dark coat and carried nothing else, not even his staff.

His destination this time wasn't the market nor the supplier district, but the Mage Association. The building stood at the center of the upper district.

A few carriages were parked outside, some belonging to nobles, others to wealthy apprentices.

He paused by the entrance for a brief moment, staring at the emblem above the gate…

It was a familiar sight, but not a pleasant one.

This was the same place where he had taken the Mage Licensing Exam more than a month ago and failed.

He stepped inside anyway.

Obviously, he wasn't here to take another exam… He just wanted to use his newly activated System Feature, the Archive!

"Let me see if I can record some spells here..."
