Rivers of the Night

Chapter 596: Connections

"Just… just who are you…?"

It was simply impossible for a normal boy to deduce these things. In fact, she was starting to wonder if Theron was like her, but unless his Clan was significantly more powerful than her own, there was no way his situation was an exact replica of her own.

She was trash, useless to her Clan.

Theron, however… he was an existence that she couldn't even fathom. A Dual Resonance Mancer with two Celestial Resonances. That didn't even make any logical sense.

Everything about his talent screamed top tier.

If there was a family in this world that would get rid of him… just how powerful were they? Were they a family of Dual Resonance Mancers?

She had never heard of such a thing, but what if it was true?

And if they weren't, then what tier was their bloodline at? It couldn't possibly just be a Primal Bloodline… was it possibly a Legendary Titan Bloodline?

Her imagination was running wild, but rightfully so.

She believed that Theron couldn't have possibly deduced that her anklets and earrings were chains. She didn't believe that anyone could possibly be so talented. It must be that he had seen them somewhere else before.

But this form of restraint was considered to be highly specialized and highly difficult to implement. It required someone at a minimum of the Dome of Heaven Realm who comprehended Resonance beyond the Mandate level to implement.

How could she be expected to believe that a youth like Theron, who was still only a Silver Mancer, had seen through something like this on his own when, in all likelihood, even the Matriarch of the Hall of Ice and Heart couldn't?

If this could be seen through so easily by the people of this quadrant of the universe, Lyra was almost too certain that her family would have never allowed her to come here at all. They would have sent her somewhere even more remote.

Her anklets and earrings chimed whenever she moved. They were incredibly subtle to outsiders, but to her they might as well have been sirens blaring in her ears, the perpetual roar of beasts curdling her blood.

It wasn't actually so exaggerated, nor was it such a torture method, but it might as well have been given what it did to her Resonances and Mana.

Because of it, whenever she cultivated, moved, or did anything in her life for that matter, there would be a dissonance in her soul. This dissonance made it impossible for her to commune with her bloodline to boost her talent, skills, and prowess.

In actuality, she too was a Celestial Resonance talent. But to the people of this Sect, she only looked like a Runebound Talent because that was what was effectively left of her.

Her cultivation speed was also that of a Runebound Talent for much the same reason. Every aspect of her was slowed beyond the realms of reason, and it was probably the greatest frustration of her life.

"I take that as you believing me and I don't need to waste time explaining the other two reasons? So why don't you answer my questions?"

Lyra hesitated and then lowered her head.

"That is impossible."

Theron looked at her for a long while before nodding.

He could guess what was going on. If she was exiled here, and even chained like this, she was certainly bound against using the influence of her family to benefit. That also meant that there would be restrictions on what she could say.

It was fine if someone else figured it out on their own. But if Lyra was the one who made the attempt to expose her identity in hopes of an exchange of benefits or something of the like, she would certainly be the one to suffer for it.

However, this was information for Theron as well.

What family would go so far as to expel a young and innocent woman like Lyra?

It was impossible that she had committed a grave sin, not with her disposition and her grit. Someone who felt they had done something wrong wouldn't be willing to sacrifice as much as Lyra.

It was more likely that some injustice had been done to her, which only left one real possibility…

Illegitimate child. Probably of someone quite important and powerful.

From this, Theron could build much of the rest of the picture.

Among the souls Theron had, there was one by the name of Filin, a young man who was among the weaker of the souls. He was only in the middle ranges of the Cloud Realm, but he was quite young and among the more talented of the bunch for certain.

He was probably second on the list of future Quasi Dome of Heaven experts that Theron had to watch out for.

However, this wasn't what was interesting about him. Instead, it was the series of missions that Patriarch Nightingale had given him, one of which included penning a letter of love to a certain brothel prostitute…

The love letter was signed by another person's name, though the name itself didn't seem to have any great meaning other than the fact that when the first letters of the long name were arranged, it spelled out Lyra's name as though he was taunting something… or someone.

The moment Theron saw something about a brothel, he thought of Uslim.

Wasn't Uslim tasked by the Patriarch to go and be belligerent at an inn and then pay the innkeeper to bed the latter's daughter?

These two things seemed unrelated… but when Theron looked into it, this inn and the brothel Filin was tasked with sending the letter to were in the same exact small town, and they were actually quite close in proximity.

In fact… it seemed that the innkeeper so eager to sell his daughter for a tidy sum had some holdings with the brothel.

Not long later, the entire town was wiped off the map.

Someone had found out, and someone was enraged.

Someone related to Lyra, or maybe someone who was precisely Lyra's enemy and the reason she was here.
