"Wait, why does this shell look just like... a magic bomb?" Betty was absolutely certain about what she was seeing, and she turned to look at Ren.
"The way I see it, the scenarios a magic power railgun needs to handle are basically the same as magic bombs plus catapults—just needs to be more accurate. If we can get longer range and more power, that's even better, but the core scenario stays the same."
Ren smiled. "Don't you think this approach makes way more sense than just firing off spells directly?"
The magic power railgun was basically an upgraded catapult that could accurately launch super powerful magic bombs that would then explode right on target. Pretty much perfect.
If they wanted better range, they could add stronger propulsion to the magic railgun, or slap some runes on the shells to make them lighter, or help them cut through the air better, or whatever else. Didn't really matter.
"This really is a pretty clever idea." The Goddess of Magic smiled. "Separating the launch system from the attack system, then combining them separately—that fits the whole Magic Conductor style perfectly."
Betty, who'd been standing there all tied up in knots, felt her whole body tremble a bit when she heard the goddess say that. She'd been getting way too hung up on some weird stuff.
Even with these changes, weren't Magic Conductors still Magic Conductors?
Magic power, machinery, usable by anyone... it all still checked out.
"I was overthinking it." Betty looked down. "This approach really does make more sense than a magic cannon."
"Like I said, it's just slightly different use cases." Ren shook his head a bit. "Using both types of magic cannons together is the right way to go. Alright, let's test this some more and keep upgrading. I think we can beef up these shells even more. Once we've got them really dialed in, I'm gonna set up a personal Spirit Realm world and pack it full of both types of Magic Conductor cannons, paired with the matching divine authority. Then if anyone messes with me, I'll just summon the whole Spirit Realm full of Magic Conductor cannons and blast them all at once! Even other gods won't be able to handle it!"
"Pfft—" Betty couldn't help but crack up imagining a whole Spirit Realm's worth of Magic Conductor cannons suddenly getting summoned and just going absolutely nuts firing in one direction.
The mental image was kind of ridiculous but also kind of awesome!
"What's so funny?"
"Nothing, just thinking that setup would be pretty intense." Betty tried to hold back her laughter. "Oh, by the way, are we giving the Magic Conductor cannon tech to the mortals? Roster territory seems totally focused on civilian Magic Conductors lately."
"Oh yeah, definitely giving it to them. Won't be long before a new war breaks out." Ren didn't even hesitate.
"The God of War?"
"That's part of it. I just stole another chunk of the God of War's authority, so he's definitely not gonna let that slide. But the bigger thing is, Roster's starting to roll out my Magic Conductors everywhere, and that's seriously threatening the old guard's interests. Some of them aren't gonna take it lying down—there'll probably be all kinds of pushback." From what Ren remembered from his past life, every country went through something similar during industrialization.
He really didn't want to see the great situation they'd built up in Roster territory get wiped out by some war.
Not to mention, thanks to Viscount Roster's hard work, over twenty territories had already started installing Magic Power Networks. Tons of other territories were drooling over it, all wanting to buy, purchase, and build their own Magic Power Networks—that was super important stuff.
If things kept going like this, before long the core areas of most territories in the Kingdom of Dawn would be covered by standard Magic Power Networks. With those networks in place, the Magic Net could really take off.
Betty took a while to process all that, and still couldn't totally wrap her head around what Ren was saying. But just that first point alone was pretty telling.
The God of War definitely wanted his authority back, and probably wanted to grab some of the God of Technology's authority too. Going through the divine realm obviously wasn't gonna work—the Goddess of Magic's power would block him. Starting corruption in the mortal realm was the way to go.
They needed to get those magic cannons out there ASAP!
"Oh my god! Mr. Horace, I just knew your inventions would change the world! And it's only been this long, and you've already pulled off another incredible feat!"
The next day at noon, in Roster territory, Viscount Roster had just gotten back from the capital. He stared at the machine in front of him totally mesmerized, couldn't help gushing about it.
This was just too amazing!
Really, truly amazing!
The 'apprentice' standing nearby felt pretty embarrassed hearing himself get praised like that by the lord, by the kingdom's Finance Minister. He scratched his head awkwardly. "My lord, honestly, I was able to make this so fast mainly because of the divine messenger. He helped me out a ton."
"No, this is all your achievement. I just did some optimization and upgrades based on your research." The little magnetic monster's mechanical voice chimed in. "And if you really want to thank someone, you should thank yesterday's 'Magic Conductors from Beginner to Mastery' for helping you out!"
Viscount Roster could handle foreign envoys and all the big nobles and ministers in the kingdom just fine, but dealing with a great inventor and a divine messenger being all humble with each other? He honestly didn't know what to say for a second.
Especially after they casually brought the God of Technology into the conversation in just a few sentences!
Even though he was a believer in the God of Technology, even though he'd actually met the God of Technology before!
"Ahem, so, uh, apprentice, why don't you show us this spinning and weaving machine? Let's see how it actually works?" The Wandering Wild Mage seemed to notice things getting a little weird with them passing credit back and forth, so he jumped in. "I'm guessing Viscount Roster's pretty curious too, right? All the Magic Conductor machines we've made before were either copying real animals or copying stuff we saw in the 'miracle'! This is the first time we've gone from scratch to finished product based on our own ideas, developing a Magic Conductor on our own!"
For a second there, he remembered his own Magic Conductor sword—the first weapon he'd developed himself after getting schooled by the God of Technology's magic bombs and ray guns.
Now Magic Conductor swords were catching on all over the kingdom's armies, replacing the old ones. Compared to traditional swords, Magic Conductor swords needed less material, were cheaper, but packed more punch. Definitely quality equipment, and no worries about them wearing out during use. The only issue was they needed tons of people skilled at rune engraving to produce them. Anywhere else, that might jack up labor costs big time, but this was Roster territory. Roster territory totally had the capacity for mass production.
Under Roster territory's unique industrial system, production costs for all kinds of Magic Conductors got seriously compressed. Magic Conductor swords were no exception.
Plus, Viscount Roster sold them at pretty reasonable prices. A lot of times, he didn't even make a profit.
Of course, Viscount Roster wasn't running a charity, and he definitely wasn't sacrificing his personal wealth for this rotten kingdom. It was just that by selling at such low prices, he monopolized the energy storage rune charging business... Shaking off those thoughts, he refocused on the spinning and weaving machine in front of him.
