Chapter 88: Breaking the Deadlock II

The scattered Corpse Executioners wandering inside the City Hall didn't cause much trouble for the group.

Not to mention that the Invokers from the Tabopolis Oak Knights involved in the mission were of high level themselves, Commander Recall was a fourth-tier Night Hawk, for whom the Corpse Executioners were as threatless as regular skeleton warriors were for Fang Hong and the others.

Therefore, the group smashed through easily, making their way into the hall of the first floor before long.

But as soon as they entered the hall, everyone couldn't help but inhale sharply.

Because the barrier effect of the City Hall weakened from the outside in, the scene here was beyond everyone's imagination. The undead outside surged into the City Hall like a tide, resembling a berserk, glowing flood; frenzied ghosts shrieked and hovered in mid-air, interspersed with countless skeletons.

They even smashed the glass of the hall's floor-to-ceiling arched windows, and the rust-weapon-wielding corpses leaped down from the high platform there. When they spotted Fang Hong and his group, the flood turned as if swirling around and swept toward them.

"My god!" Tianlan was dumbfounded.

The Papalarians turned to run, but Diket grabbed one from behind, tossing the little dwarf back while quietly reminding, "Don't disrupt the formation."

Recall issued an order, "Knights, advance!"

Up ahead, amidst the bustling crowd and amidst the whiteness like falling snow, Fang Hong already spotted the skeleton towering half a body height above the crowd. It stood ten feet tall, its head brushing against the ceiling, holding a giant scythe, draped in a cloak as black as night with shadow under its hood and the ghastly white bones and twisted eye sockets enwreathed with a glint of firelight.

That was an Elite Rank Corpse Executioner, and not just one—just a short distance behind it, hidden among the undead army, were several other big guys also carrying giant scythes.

Recall squinted, drew his bow and nocked an arrow, and upon releasing the bowstring, a silver light pierced the skeleton's skull. The foremost Corpse Executioner reeled backward and collapsed with a thunderous crash.

But this victory was insignificant compared to the number of undead.

"What should we do, should we break out in another direction?" Red Leaf hadn't expected the hall to be like this, her experience still shallow, she hesitated for a moment.

Fang Hong shook his head, furrowing his brow and staring at the ongoing fight, "Dolifen controls tens of thousands of undead with Dragon's Golden Eyes; breaking out from any direction is the same."

He turned back, "This is exactly why I advised against holding fixed positions in the City Hall. High-level undead are rare, and in open ground, we can deal with them using area skills and spells, making a breakout much simpler."

"But now we might not even make it out of the City Hall," Red Leaf said anxiously.

"Maybe not," Fang Hong said, while glancing at the commander of the Tabopolis mission.

Recall was also looking at him, and upon seeing him glance over, an expression of surprise appeared in his eyes, but he still nodded at him.

Clearly, both had thought of something similar.

Recall immediately issued an order to the knights up front, "Raise your shields."

Fang Hong then turned back to pull out a hesitating Papalarian crossbowman, speaking loudly to him, "Prepare for Explosive Shooting, set delay to minimum."

The knights then stepped forward in unison, raising their square shields side by side to form a wall. As Royal Guards of the Tabopolis style, they possessed the expertise of the Royal Phalanx tactic. This tactic allowed the Imperial Guard to gain a defensive enhancement from each colleague within the formation—creating a typical collective strength, the more people, the more indestructible.

Thus, the Royal Phalanx advanced and retreated together like a wall of oak, and indeed, it was for this reason that the Tabopolis Oak Knights were so named.

The front-row Corpse Executioners had already charged close, and their giant axes slashed diagonally down, meeting the multiple layers of the shield wall with a dull thud; a flash of black light and effects like armor piercing and necrosis were triggered, but to no avail; the Oak Wall stood unshaken.

And just as their offensive nearly ceased, the shield wall opened a slit, behind which Parker and another crossbowman crouched and shot out two crossbow bolts.

The bolts flew into the hall—

Then came two flashes, the fire from the explosion initially collapsing inward, then suddenly expanding outwards in all directions a moment later, a dazzling blaze of light, the explosion deafening.

Then came the rushing shockwave, the blast so close by and within an enclosed space. Even though the shield wall alleviated some of the impact, the front-row knights were still blown away.

"Healers!" Recall shouted loud.

Amidst the howling winds, the healers of Tabopolis immediately rushed out.

With even the Shield Wall formations of the Tabopolis Knights barely holding, not to mention the undead at the center of the blast, the ghosts were instantly obliterated, and the remaining skeletons were blown away either out the window or scattered messily in the corners of the hall.

After the dust had settled, those left standing in the hall were just a few high-level undead.

The most threatening were those few Elite Corpse Executioners.

The knights steadied themselves, and at Recall's command, the shield wall parted layer by layer, revealing the attackers behind.

Red Leaf took the initiative, directing two Annihilators QV700; two Magical Spears were fired in succession, one hitting a Corpse Executioner's left shinbone, and the other piercing its chest cavity.
