61.5 - Lore: Clans and Genealogies of the Halak Peoples

I, Ludwig Johann Rappmeister-Rapmasari, am writing this chronicle of the Halak realms, kingdoms, and their clans due to a need to commit much of these fascinating oral traditions into a written form.

Before I start the recount, I must preface that I have a strong admiration for the egalitarian philosophy of Halak culture. While Halak society retains some form of 'nobility' and an upper-class in the form of the rulers and families of the countless villages, hamlets, clans, and kingdoms of the Halaklands, this is far less rigid in principle than what we may be familiar with on the western or even far eastern continents of Orbis.

In Halak society, every man who has a wife and children is considered – in principle – a king. The Halak term for king, 'Raja', seems to have been borrowed from the Hindan language. However, within the context of Halak culture, 'king' means leader. And every man is tasked to lead his own family.

As if to strengthen this philosophy, another point of admiration for the Halak, is how each clan keeps meticulous records of their genealogies. If not written down upon bark or parchments, then by tradition orally. While I can not comment on the accuracy of many of these early stories – that seem to be more in the realm of myth rather than reality –, I can not deny their captivating nature.

All Halak clans – and by extension, every Halak person – of the Halaklands claim descent from a single patrilineal ancestors, known simply as 'Si Raja Halak' which translates simpy to 'The Halak King'.

Legends say that 'Si Raja Halak' descended upon the Dolok Mulajadi upon the Pusuk Buhit of Matanitao so many centuries ago. The First Halak, and a direct descendant of the old Halak gods though different myths recount different versions of his own genealogy. However, the consensus remains that Si Raja Halak was a fifth generation descendant of the first human-born couple of Portibi (The Halak concept of Earth).

While I can't very well recount all the deeds of Si Raja Halak in this document nor can I create a truly exhaustive list of all the Halak clans, I shall do my best to put forward an accurate account of his genealogy within this book as it pertains to the seventh generation. Now without further ado, we shall begin.

(1) Si Raja Halak, after he descended upon Matanitao, was quickly enamoured with a heavenly beauty. Her name was 'Siboru Suruan Ni Mula Jadi'. The legends would believe that she was a great handmaiden of the celestial court of Banuaginjang (The Heavenly Realms) and her beauty was unmatched.

From this union was born (2.A) Raja Sisombaon Saluhut, (2.B) Guru Panatap Langit, and (2.C) Patuan Tanolaut.

Raja Sisombaon Saluhut had fallen in love with a 'daughter of the mountains'. It is unclear what exactly her origins are – some saying she was a sort of nymph or other such spirit, while others saying she was a minor goddess – but what is given is her name, 'Si Boru Dolok Parmesti'. From their union was born twelve children, six sons and six daughters, who were:

(3.A.a) Raja Marhillong Roha

(3.A.b) Tuan Sorimangaraja

(3.A.c) Tuan Soripadoha

(3.A.d) Tuan Guru Somba Mulajadi

(3.A.e) Tuan Parsomba Debatanatolu

(3.A.f) Raja Lonap

Si Boru Parintan Mulia, Si Boru Soriratu, Si Boru Bungabalau, Si Boru Sairia, Si Boru Saisuping, and Si Boru Langkat Lela.

Raja Marhillong Roha was the eldest child of Raja Sisombaon Saluhut. He was born as a twin with his sister, 'Siboru Parintan Mulia'. The two engaged in an incestuous marriage and from this union was born (4.A.a.1) Raja Hushus. Because of his isolation with his mother, Raja Hushus (unknowingly at first) took his mother who was said to be blessed with eternal beauty as his wife and together they fathered nine children:

(5.A.a.1.1) Tuan Tubuna Buni.

(5.A.a.1.2) Raja Parmahan.

(5.A.a.1.3) Raja Siluahon.

(5.A.a.1.4) Raja Parbinotoan

(5.A.a.1.5) Tuan Tagoran

(5.A.a.1.6) Tuan Nasorasuda

(5.A.a.1.7) Raja Oloanta

The last two children of Raja Hushus and his mother were two daughters who married their relatives - after Raja Hushus' exile was lifted.

Tuan Tubuna Buni was said to have been given a wife from an exiled 'Bidadhari' of the Heavenly Realms after fasting and praying for several months. Her name was said to be Si Boru Debata Soripada. Together, the two had four children together, two sons and two daughters who were: (6.A.a.1.1.1) Raja Parbunian, (6.A.a.1.1.2) Raja Bangkobuni, Si Boru Bunianuli, and Si Boru Tubunadenggan.

Raja Parbunian was said to have mastered the skill of hiding his presence and spent much of his youth as a great hunter. He had taken for himself as wife a mysterious lady washed ashore upon the coasts of Matanitao. It was revealed to him later on that she was a water spirit cursed to mortality by the spirits of the Lake because she refused to become the wife of the 'King of the Lake'.

Raja Parbunian took it upon himself to do battle with the 'King of the Lake', who took the form of a Giant Catfish. Raja Parbunian slaid the water beast and took its corpse back to cook for a feast for his wedding to Si Boru Mataniluat Nauli. Together they had five children, three sons and two daughters. They were:

(7.A.a.1.1.1.1) Raja Bolon Parbunian, from whom descends the Parbunian clans.

(7.A.a.1.1.1.2) Raja Tua Pardengkean, from whom descends the Sipardengke clans.

(7.A.a.1.1.1.3) Tuan Marbuni, from whom descends the Simarbuni clans.

Si Boru Ulitao and Si Boru Aeknaria.

Raja Bangkobuni lived most of his life thinking he had no powers of aura unlike the rest of the Halak men. However, he was surprised when he unlocked his abilities when he was facing off against two fearsome Beguganjang demons. He eventually married a daughter of the line of Raja Lonap, Si Boru Tinggil Pinggol. Together, they had four children, two sons and two daughters who were:

(7.A.a.1.1.2.1) Raja Anak Bangkobuni, from whom descends the Sibangkobuni clans.

(7.A.a.1.1.2.2) Tuan Sitinggil, from whom descends the Sitinggilon clans.

Si Boru Goranauli and Si Boru Uli Somarbege.

Raja Parmahan was said to be a great shepherd of livestock. He owned one of the richest and greatest farms of his day. He married a freed slave girl by the name of 'Si Boru Ulibirong'. Based on her descriptions as having dark skin and coarse-like hair, she might have been a slave sourced from the far away lands of the Aymarra, but it remains only a theory.

The two had three children, a son and two daughters who were: (6.A.a.1.2.1) Raja Birongmata, Si Boru Songon Inana, and Si Boru Songonasing.

Raja Birongmata married Si Boru Idauli and they had six children together, four sons and two daughters. They were:

Raja Siluahon took for himself as a wife Si Boru Maremare. Together, they had but two sons who were: (6.A.a.1.3.1) Raja Togaron Malenaoto and (6.A.a.1.3.2) Raja Mandopang Najongkas.

The two brothers had fallen in-love with the two daughters of Raja Tingkos Roha. Raja Mandopang had fallen for the elder sister while Raja Togaron fell for the younger sister. Raja Mandopang managed to convince his brother to give him the rights as the eldest child and as Raja Jolo of their family to which Raja Togaron agreed.

Raja Togaron and his wife had four children, a son and three daughters:

(7.A.a.1.3.1.1) Raja Poso Togaron, from whom descends the Sitogaron clans.

Si Boru Ulini Togar, Si Boru Ulitogar Natonga, and Si Boru Pudan Natogar.

Raja Mandopang had three sons and one daughter from his wife. He had an earlier agreement with his brother for their children to marry each other, but after he had married off his daughter to Raja Poso, Raja Togaron made his daughters swear oaths to the Debata Natolu to never take a husband from the line of Raja Mandopang. Incensed by this act of revenge, Raja Mandopang made his sons take an oath to never take a daughter of the Togaron line as wives.

His children were:

(7.A.a.1.3.2.1) Raja Gogo Simandopang, from whom descends the Simandopang clans.

(7.A.a.1.5.2.2) Tuan Tagon Pargondang, from whom descends the Sipargondang clans.

Tuan Nasorasuda was a skilled aura warrior of whom it was said his aura reserves knew no end. He lived the longest of all his brothers and was said to have lived well into the time of his great-grandchildren. He took as his wife Si Boru Manat Maruli – a daughter of the line of Patuan Tanolaut.

Together they had seven children, three sons and four daughters. They were: (6.A.a.1.6.1) Raja Saimarhillong, (6.A.a.1.6.2) Raja Saimardongan, (6.A.a.1.6.3) Tuan Saitangis, Si Boru Jeges, Si Boru Heamate, Si Boru Namokmok, and Si Boru Taridauli.

Raja Saimarhillong was said to be a shining star of his generation, a most promising warrior. He took as his wife the last of the daughters of Banuaginjang, Si Boru Nauju Sian Mulajadi. Together they had five children, two sons and three daughter. They were:

Si Boru Tamaminaron, Si Boru Arihohom, and Si Boru Uli Nalasak.

Raja Oloanta was an agreeable fellow. He married a woman of his mother's choosing – a loyal servant girl who was raised beside him, Si Boru Natamauli. Her origins remain unclear, but what is not disputed was that she bore Raja Oloanta four children, two sons and two daughters who were: (6.A.a.1.7.1) Raja Nadipaimaro, (6.A.a.1.7.2) Raja Sorimasa, Si Boru Arinamasa, and Si Boru Tangkas Nauli.

Raja Nadiapimaro was born after years of a barren marriage and so his birth was greatly celebrated by his family. It was said Raja Oloanta and his wife fasted for months on end while sending supplications to Mula Jadi and his three divine heirs for a son. He married Si Boru Haunauli and had three children with her, one son and two daughters. They were:

(7.A.a.1.7.1.1) Raja Hasianta Nadipaimaro, from whom descends the Nadipaimaro clans.

Si Boru Matasuping and Si Boru Tonggi Marijur.

Raja Sorimasa was said to be a man of whom nothing of note happened. His fortunes were well but not amazing, his abilities were competent but not the best, and even his looks and mannerisms were just plain. He was married to Si Boru Parmodom who was a listless woman of whom excitement found no welcome. The couple had but two children, a son and a daughter. They were:

(7.A.a.1.7.2.1) Raja Dame Martonang, from whom descends the Simartonang clans.

And Si Boru Somarajal.

Raja Marhillong Roha had escaped from the Dolok Mulajadi in Matanitao to the mainland of Banuatonga. He had founded himself in one of the great Homang forests. It was said that the daughter of the Homang Demon King, 'Si Boru Homang Narea', was enamored by the young man who was a powerful warrior. Unlike the other ape-like Homang demons, Lady Narea was said to be a great beauty among the forests and so Raja Marhillong Roha was inclined to accept her affections.

After a short fight with the Homang King in which he won, Raja Marhillong Roha took Lady Narea as his wife and from this union were born five children. Four sons and a daughter. The children from this union were:

(4.A.a.2) Tuan Tartang

(4.A.a.3) Raja Badak

(4.A.a.4) Raja Partaba Hau

A single daughter, 'Si Boru Bungarara'

Tuan Tartang himself had three sons and two daughters. (5.A.a.2.1) Raja Pargogo, (5.A.a.2.2) Tuan Tonggolan, and (5.A.a.2.3) Tuan Tarhatop, Si Boru Lamrea, and Si Boru Tarrea.

Raja Pargogo himself had married a woman by the name of, 'Si Boru Babiat' (lit. Tiger's Daughter). It was said she was the daughter of the great Tiger Beast King. It is most likely that there was perhaps once a beastman tribe that lived within the Halaklands but they have since been driven to extinction.

Raja Pargogo and Si Boru Babiat were blessed with four children, two sons and two daughters. The eldest of these children was (6.A.a.2.1.1) Tuan Gomgom, and he was followed by (6.A.a.2.1.2) Tuan Longo, Si Boru Tiamsa, and Si Boru Arta Martua.

Raja Sorgapitu was said to have visited the Heavenly Realms and from there he picked for himself a wife among the Divine 'Bidadharis'. The Great Mula Jadi had picked for him 'Saiuli Parsurgo' to be his wife. From this union was born ten sons and six daughters who were:

Raja Badak accepted the challenge and so he went to a great forest to hunt all the animals there. However, the forest spirits were angered by his actions and so they cursed him to the form of a rhinoceros as was his name. He lived like this for years until eventually a spirit took pity on him as she sacrificed all her magic to undo his curse.

And thus I have concluded the first seven generations of the Halak peoples and the progenitors of what would today be the Halak clans. Some clan names might not appear here as they descend from later generations, but from what I have gathered, this would be the most comprehensive written list of such a genealogy.

While some of the native scribes or shamans might dispute the record I have written, it is without a doubt that I have taken my utmost care to present things as they are or were told to me.
