Legend of the chosen ones: Beyond Destiny

Chapter 43 Good Luck Comes

As evening approached, a battered van came to a halt in a deserted garage.

After the fiasco of firing his gun recklessly in his own car and facing unbearable consequences, Lu Feng was adamant about not bringing his own vehicle for the job anymore.

Luckily, the three warmhearted friends who had kidnapped him were incredibly generous before they left, lending him their vehicle with no limits on how long or how far he could drive it.

Thus, Lu Feng skillfully navigated through Cliff City with Ji Jue in tow, arriving at what looked like a rundown, dilapidated standalone building.

Before the van had even come to a complete stop, he stuck his head out of the window and flashed a beaming, obsequious smile at the scar-faced woman leaning against the doorway.

"Sister Laila... uh..."

He bowed and scraped, rubbing his hands together as he asked, "Got any guns?"

Laila remained silent for a long time, taking a deep breath.

Then, for the next full ten minutes, Ji Jue had a front-row seat to the spectacular art of Federation language as performed by Laila.

She was like a master of street slang and a national champion of verbal gymnastics. So many curses, and not a single one repeated!

"Do you remember a few hours ago, when some son of a bitch told me he wanted to live a gun-free life?"

Laila slammed a big slap right onto Lu Feng's forehead, and then another: "Do you think this is a supermarket? We are a security company, big brother, not an assassin's guild! The sign's not even up yet, and you're worrying I'll die too soon?!"

"But didn't you last time—"

"And you've got the nerve to bring that up!"

Laila was beside herself with anger; another round of highly imaginative insults and scolding ensued: "After the mess you made last time, do you have any idea how close the Security Bureau came to knocking on our door?!"

"In the end, they didn't, right? I told you, I took care of it."

Lu Feng was shameless as he sidled up and threw an arm around her shoulder, "Come on, help a brother out, it's urgent! Once this is over, I will definitely... uh, repay you by working like an ox or horse, through thick and thin."

Laila punched him in the stomach, "Why don't you just promise your body while you're at it?"

"Uh..."

Lu Feng hesitated, "I... am afraid of the dark..."

Instantly, laughter from several burly men erupted near the doorway, while Laila's already dark face turned livid, swiftly rewarding him with two black eyes.

Now his nose was bleeding.

"Damn it, knowing you is like being cursed for eight generations!"

Still not satisfied after another kick, she turned and walked inside.

Lu Feng, on the other hand, got up as if nothing was wrong and waved for Ji Jue to follow. Passing by the entrance, he casually greeted the muscular men and introduced, "This is my bro; keep an eye out for him in the future."

"Oh, the younger bro, huh."

"Hey, little bro."

"Come hang out sometime; we'll take you shooting, it's thrilling."

Amidst their greetings, Lu Feng snorted coldly; everyone knew what they were really up to.

Shooting? The kid's first time handling a gun, he hit a moving target at fifty meters with all four shots. Any fool who bets against him better be ready to lose their pants.

Ignoring any sense of stranger danger, they were taken straight to the basement's equipment room, where removing two wall panels revealed a dense and dazzling... armory!

Ji Jue couldn't take his eyes off it.

Are you telling me this is a security company? Which security company has such an assortment of automatic weapons in their storage? From pistols to rifles to shotguns, it seemed like every model he'd read about in books was there.

Laila, looking as sour as ever, had laid out all their wares.

"Grab what you need and get out. Every time I see you, trouble follows," Laila said, arms crossed, voice cold.

"Wow, Brother Feng," Ji Jue whispered, "you really can't deny it; you owe her now."

"Would you just shut up?"

Lu Feng, annoyed, gave him a smack on the back of the head and strutted in to 'shop,' leaving Ji Jue standing there, looking around, touching everything, all of it novel.

Especially when he spotted in the corner a set of turret lathes... I mean, isn't your veteran club's collection a bit too rich?

Despite this, Lu Feng was still picky, complaining about this and that being absent, and finally shook his head, "I was hoping to find a set of Power Armor here."

"Go fuck your mother's legs!" Laila exploded, "If I had Power Armor, I'd use it to crush your skull first!"

Lu Feng shook his head, "Look at you, all worked up again."

"Lu Feng, you motherf—"

Just as the two of them were about to descend into their habitual bickering and scuffling, they heard Ji Jue's voice, "Sister Laila, could I borrow this?"

Just now, when he'd subconsciously used his ability around here, he'd felt an unprecedented strong resonance. It was like a sudden outcry right beside his ear, overwhelming all other noise. It was as if a dying man, buried in mud, was bellowing in his last breaths, refusing to succumb to silence.

In the midst of silence, like thunder.

Right there, on the display racks on the wall!

That weapon covered in dust, untouched for who knows how long.

Following the direction of his finger, Lu Feng couldn't help but gasp.

"Holy shit, you really have one?"

The Mammoth II Anchor Assault Gun, a proud product of Guardian Industry, feared for decades with a legacy of bloodshed and death.

The critical point was, this weapon wasn't even meant for human users!

It was a standard weapon module for military exoskeleton Power Armor!

Even though it had a new coat of paint and seemed to look different, Lu Feng recognized it at a glance.

"It was a bonus from a trade with Central Earth tribes. They threw it in for free, it's been decommissioned," Laila shook her head, "Kid, that thing's a no-go, it'll explode on you."

"Don't worry, it won't."

Ji Jue smiled, "At least, not while I use it today."

He reached into his backpack and pulled out a portable Spiritual Probe.

After learning Alchemy for so long, he had finally found a use for it...

When they arrived, their hands were empty, but when they left, they took everything they could carry. The two of them hauled away long guns, short guns, and bullets, with Ji Jue struggling to shoulder it all by himself.

Watching as his collection and possessions were swept away by these two bastards within a matter of minutes, Laila's face turned even darker. She followed them step by step, afraid they might find something else good to take back with them.

It wasn't until after they drove off in that beat-up car that she breathed a sigh of relief.

"Hey, leaving already?" A brawny man missing his middle finger poked his head out. "Last time you were so decisive, I thought there was no hope left."

"Him?"

Laila couldn't help but let out a cold laugh. "That damn thing, all pretense and posturing—who the hell doesn't know what kind of animal he really is?"

Live a quiet life?

Is that really you, Lu Feng?

Even after so many years, she still couldn't forget the first time she met Lu Feng. In the midst of rolling smoke, in a crater blasted by an Empire artillery shell, there he was, sitting on a corpse and smoking a cigarette.

It was his first time on the battlefield, but he showed no fear, that calm and cheerful smile on his face.

As if... he was coming home.

"He'll come back one day."

Laila said softly, "He can't put down the gun."

Just like how people can't forget to breathe.

"Damn, I was suffocating."

In the passenger seat, Lu Feng finally caught his breath. "Carrying so much stuff, I thought Laila that old miser was going to lose it. Your face really worked wonders, Little Ji!"

"My face my ass!"

Ji Jue rolled his eyes. "You know damn well whose face she's giving respect to. Use your unbeatable manly muscles to think, Brother Feng, what is she really after? Is it because I can repair cars?"

"Maybe, the way you pulled out that what's-it-called probe, her eyes lit up." Lu Feng patted his shoulder and advised, "If she asks you for work later, don't you dare go lowball her! I'll get you a military maintenance price list, just follow that!"

Military? Price list?

You mean that coffee cup that costs over two thousand units of Imperial currency?

You're giving this to your lifesaver? And she saved you twice...

Ji Jue was shocked and when he turned back to look at Lu Feng, his expression was full of admiration. "You're truly the worst, Brother Feng!"

"What kind of talk is that, you little rascal!"

"Shh—"

Ji Jue suddenly raised his hand, cutting him off, "Phone call."

On the cellphone belonging to the three men, one screen lit up, flashing with the contact's name—Scar Ming.

From the phone's data, it should be their leader.

Scar Ming.

After picking up, an irate voice came from the other end: "What the hell is going on? Why now..."

"Hello? Scar Ming, got 'em!"

In Ji Jue's hand, the cellphone nobly emitted the voice of its original owner, gleefully reporting: "Got him, snagged that kid too, heh, walked right into our trap!"

"What did you say?!"

The voice at the other end of the phone was stunned, seemingly shocked: "You got the kid too?"

"Yeah, just went a little way and the kid caught up to us, wanting to spar with the brothers. But then the fourth brother swung a stick to the back of his head, and he just collapsed."

Amidst the slightly chaotic background noise, suddenly another voice sounded: "Turn on the video, let me have a look!"

The call ended, and quickly a video call came through.

As expected, through the phone's camera, one could only see a face brimming with difficulty to contain joy, two injured people, and in the back of the van, Ji Jue's dying visage.

But in the video, the man's face made Ji Jue slightly startled.

That unkempt, disheveled appearance.

He had clearly seen it that very morning!

Was this the Qi Qin mentioned in the text message?

"Bring him back first!" Once sure it was really Ji Jue, Qi Qin's eyes lit up, "Directly to the office, the boss is already prepared!"

"Should we finish him off?" Ji Jue asked tentatively.

"I'll finish your mom!" Qi Qin's face changed abruptly, his voice raised: "Bring him back in one piece, do you hear? If he loses a hair... Damn, nothing better go wrong now, understand?!"

"Yes, yes, we'll be there soon!"

The false face on the call showed a sycophantic smile.

After hanging up, silence settled in the tranquil cabin.

Lu Feng quietly adjusted the weapons in his hands: a pistol, two submachine guns, a shotgun, meticulous and careful, without a single error. After confirming and adjusting all the weapons in the bag, he slowly raised his head.

A smile formed on his face.

But it was utterly different from his usual smiles, cold and ferocious, like a bloodthirsty beast that could hardly wait to feast.

"Ready, Little Ji?"

"Even if I'm not, do you think I'd let you go alone?"

Ji Jue rolled his eyes and raised his voice, "Burn their whole family, smack their mother!"

Thus, Lu Feng's smile grew even more joyous.

"Burn their whole family, smack their mother!!!"

Amid the deep roar of the engine, the van sped down the road like thunder.

And so, to the celebratory tunes of "Good Fortune Comes" on the radio, they raced toward the dazzling neon lights.

In the distance, dusk was just beginning to fall.
