Legend of the chosen ones: Beyond Destiny

Chapter 169: A Small Opening Is Not an Opening

Flames surged and ascended.

The scorching gale was laden with a large amount of dust and debris, scattering in the air along with a tinge of blood.

On the plaza outside the outpatient building, figures in disarray were dodging the rain-like remnants of limbs and torsos, pale-faced.

At the very back, Tong Hua, gasping for breath, wiped the sweat from her forehead, feeling like she had never been as exhausted as a dog before... Ji Jue, that bastard, had just tossed a roll of records at her without even moving his mouth, and it was she herself who had ended up running her legs off.

The entire way, she carried the bomb he gave her, feeling scared out of her wits, installing them everywhere was bad enough, then there were the gas and oxygen valves and various dust dispensing devices... all manually operated by her.

One could say, if Ji Jue, this terrorist, was the mastermind behind the scenes, then she couldn't escape the net of the law either. If this were happening outside, it's likely that the guy from the Security Bureau in her own family would turn grim, and perhaps even be morally justified in betrayal!

To have herself, the young miss of the Tong family, blow up a hospital...

What in the world was going on in Ji Jue's dog brain?

If word got out, it would be black history for life.

No!

Tong Hua suddenly became alert—this damn thing, it couldn't be planning to use this to manipulate her, could it?!

But then again...

At this moment, seeing such a huge thing explode before her eyes, despite being the one who had lain the mines and connected the wires, she felt an indescribable sense of achievement and thrill emerge from her heart.

It felt pretty good?

Unfortunately, the pleasure didn't last long.

Under the rubble of the hospital, amidst the mangled bodies of monsters, suddenly there was a painful roar. The ruined walls abruptly bulged upward, and then, countless human heads pieced together into a grotesque giant head finally revealed itself!

On the sealed second floor of the hospital, that thing which mutated and distorted from numerous patients into a Disaster Beast!

At this moment, just looking at it, she felt her scalp go numb. She could feel the vigorous life force, undeterred even by direct exposure to the explosion, and the fierce, hungry aura...

If this were to happen outside of the Time Ruins, it would probably already be enough to be classified as a [Hazard Level], sufficient to mobilize an army for extermination, right?

But at this moment, she stepped back without the slightest hint of panic, shielding the Chosen Ones in front of her like zombies.

Including the twitching Xie Lan.

"I leave it to you," she said.

Xie Lan's eyes twitched wildly, helplessly sighing.

"Although I appreciate you giving me and the other survivors advance notice to evacuate, I'm just a researcher," he coldly asked, "Even if I give you the benefit of the doubt, how did Ji Jue know for sure that I would help him?"

"He said..."

Tong Hua recalled the content of the records, her expression also becoming strange: "—You know my identity. If you contribute to protecting it, the Tong family will greatly reward you."

"I don't lack money."

Xie Lan shook his head without hesitation, his lips curling with disdain.

What a joke, our Vortex System's research investments are huge, but at least the input and output are proportional, okay! Besides, I have the medical business, a money-printing machine.

As if everyone's like you Embers, a bottomless pit?!

Hilarious!

"He also said..."

Tong Hua continued quoting Ji Jue's words: "If you turn out to be of no use at all, forget about getting your hands on any of the materials, he will hog all the samples of the Undying Disease.

Including the ones you're collecting now, the Security Bureau will strip it all from you."

She paused, verbatim relay of the final blow:

"—Doctor, you don't want your medical license revoked, do you?"

"..."

As soon as these words fell, Xie Lan's scornful smile froze on his face, with a surge of irritation in his eyes. Inside the pocket under his collar, the rats were already rolling with laughter, barely able to stop.

Hahaha, Xie Lan, you've got your day coming too?!

"You Embers craftsmen are all so damn heartless!"

Annoyed, Xie Lan wanted nothing more than to spit in that dog's face: You've had your eye on me for a long time, haven't you? Sending yourself to your death while dragging me, an innocent doctor, down with you?

"...I do have some ability in drumming up a beat," he grudgingly admitted after clenching his teeth for a long while, squeezing out his voice from between them, "But don't expect me to help him with the Undying Disease!"

As soon as his voice fell, in the midst of the disturbed scorching whirlwind, strands of ethereal light emerged, and countless poisonous insects spread from the hot wind, unfolding their wings, soaring.

Like dazzling light reflecting off water, they turned into a river, blowing towards the frenzied Disaster Beast struggling to crawl out from the rubble.

In an instant, atop the head of the Disaster Beast, numerous hideous faces seemed to enter a dream, their expressions becoming agitated, their hollow eyes revealing either despair or venomous looks, frenzied from circulation.

It then plunged headfirst into the rubble, battling the flames and the unseen monsters within.

Then, Xie Lan whistled, and the zombie-like Puppets behind him began to stir, their previously dull eyes glimmering with a trace of lucidity, followed by fear and panic.

"Go, deal with that thing."

Xie Lan, fighting back his pain, pointed forward: "If you manage it, I'll fulfill the contract, and I'll release you from the hospital."

Instantly, those chaotic eyes lit up, almost ecstatically.

They didn't even need Xie Lan to urge them further before they threw themselves at it recklessly.

Thereby leaving the raging monster with no chance to attend to anything else.

.

.

At this moment, seeing the high-ranking contamination he had maneuvered with such fanfare being sent sky-high in an instant, Lian Cheng under the Bone Wheel, suddenly, fell into a stupor.

Bewildered, puzzled, incomprehending.
