Chapter 1223: Old Classmate (Part 2)

"Alright then." Yang Ping wasn't particularly fond of attending public events, but such an interview was worth going to. It was a good chance to assess the quality of the new batch.

Moreover, an old classmate was on the interview list, so it was a perfect opportunity to see them.

When Yang Ping, Song Zimo, and Tang Shun arrived at the meeting room for the interview, everyone else had already gathered. The head of the Human Resources Office, Director Wan Quanzhen, and several department directors, along with veteran experts from the expert panel, were seated at the interview desk. Director Gao of Sports Medicine was also present. They were all key experts of the hospital. Of course, these experts were only there to assist, as the final decision rested mainly with the three from the institute, considering it was the institute's recruitment.

A dozen or so students had also arrived, seated in the adjacent meeting room awaiting their turn. The interview hadn't started yet, and once it began, they would go in one by one for individual interviews.

As Yang Ping passed by the adjacent meeting room, he felt a strong urge to go in and meet his old classmate He Zijian. But, on second thought, it seemed inappropriate. He estimated that He Zijian hadn't contacted him beforehand in order to avoid suspicion and didn't want to trouble Yang Ping, intending to rely on his own abilities to join the institute.

Therefore, Yang Ping just glanced at the meeting room next door peripherally and gave up the idea of going in to greet them.

"Professor Yang, you're here!"

As Yang Ping arrived at the entrance of the meeting room, Gao Yuan hurriedly came out to greet him, bowing and guiding him to his seat.

Director Wan, the head of the Human Resources Office, usually projected an image of a kind older sister to others. Seeing that the interview time hadn't yet arrived, he chatted with Yang Ping briefly in private, giving him a simple introduction to the basic situation of this batch of students.

All these individuals were PhDs. Currently, a doctoral degree was a mandatory requirement for recruitment at Sanbo Hospital. Some were from eight-year programs, while others followed segmented courses, but all were graduates from top domestic medical universities.

These PhD candidates were called into the interview meeting room one by one, each having only thirty minutes. Their educational backgrounds had already been thoroughly investigated, and the interview was mainly for face-to-face communication. If there were no issues, it was controlled within thirty minutes; if there were concerns, the time might be extended appropriately. Anyway, if the interviews couldn't be completed that day, they could continue the next, with three days scheduled.

Regarding He Zijian, Director Wan kept this person in mind.

When Director Wan first reviewed the information on the applying PhDs, upon seeing He Zijian's undergraduate alma mater, it seemed to remind him of something. Wasn't this PhD's undergraduate degree from the same school as Professor Yang? Looking at the graduation time, they were in the same cohort? Could they know each other? What a coincidence.

Logically, if this were the case, Professor Yang would need to recuse himself. However, as it was Professor Yang, Director Wan pretended not to know anything, showing no signs. He began to ponder if this person was a connection of Professor Yang's, and if so, it might require a discreet arrangement. Such matters would definitely be inconvenient for Professor Yang to address personally, but Director Wan was quite adept in the subtleties of human relationships.

Upon realizing this issue, Director Wan immediately tasked a trusted subordinate to investigate He Zijian thoroughly, asking her to check if He Zijian was indeed in the same class as Professor Yang. This subordinate was highly efficient and could distinguish the weight of matters, quickly responding that He Zijian was indeed a classmate of Professor Yang. Moreover, this subordinate was quite capable, swiftly locating a classmate of Yang Ping's from the same class, as the medical circle was quite small, and it was easy to find someone by tracing a few connections.

Through this classmate, it was learned that during their studies, He Zijian and Yang Ping had a good private relationship. Furthermore, this individual consistently excelled in his studies. At school, both he and Professor Yang were among the top performers, embodying a sense of mutual respect among peers.

After such verification and investigation, Director Wan had a sense of certainty. Still, she needed to observe Yang Ping's reactions during the interview to gauge his true thoughts.

Such matters would certainly be inappropriate for Director Wan to directly ask Yang Ping, relying instead on keen observation and inference – a skill in which Director Wan was quite proficient.

The interviews began, unexpectedly with the first PhD to enter being He Zijian. Yang Ping was quite surprised, but He Zijian was not at all startled, having mentally prepared himself for this moment. His sole purpose was reaching Yang Ping, yet he decided not to take shortcuts, thus refraining from previously contacting Yang Ping for any preferential treatment.

Upon seeing Yang Ping, he gave a slight smile, which Yang Ping reciprocated, the gesture serving as a greeting between old classmates.

Director Wan keenly captured these subtle expressions, noting them in her heart. Using her unique sensitivity as a woman, she discerned that Professor Yang held a decent appreciation for He Zijian.

Yang Ping said nothing, as He Zijian was primarily a clinical doctor, making Song Zimo the one to conduct the questions for his interview. Song Zimo was entirely unaware of the fact that he and Yang Ping were classmates, showing no intention of offering any special consideration, simply following the standard procedure in his questioning.

Song Zimo posed several highly specialized questions, all of which He Zijian answered impeccably. These questions pertained to cutting-edge technology, not found in textbooks, knowledge that required frequent reading of top English papers in the specific field to master.

Following this, Tang Shun asked a few research-related questions. A PhD was expected to undergo rigorous research training and should not only serve as a clinical doctor but also engage in research later, capable of creatively solving complex problems.

At grassroots hospitals, doctors might focus solely on clinical work, but at top-tier hospitals, a doctor must possess strong research capabilities. If all doctors only engaged in clinical work, accumulating experience, who would research new issues and drive medical progress?

Tang Shun, having studied in the United States and Japan, directly posed questions in English, delivering particularly challenging queries that the average person would find difficult to answer.

He didn't intend to flaunt his English; rather, he was using the interview to assess the genuine English proficiency of the candidates. After all, these days, everything requires validation to be reassuring. Grades cannot represent true ability, especially for master's and PhD candidates, requiring face-to-face evaluation.

In response to Tang Shun's questions, He Zijian answered steadily and flawlessly. His answers, although lacking in standout brilliance, were devoid of any notable flaws, characterized by their caution and thoroughness, akin to his usual demeanor.

He Zijian hadn't studied abroad, yet his proficiency in English was excellent, indicating significant effort invested over time.

A top-tier doctor must master English, as over ninety percent of medical knowledge is documented in English. Translated books and papers suffer from severe delay and distortion. Doctors must be able to read English literature themselves and write English papers; at this point, English is no longer merely a language of a specific country but the de facto universal academic language.

Yang Ping was very satisfied with He Zijian's performance. During his school years, He Zijian avoided dating or hanging out in internet cafes playing games, spending his days in the library, which was why Yang Ping held him in high regard. Now, as he graduated with a PhD and applied to join the institute, it was considered a good thing.

The saying goes, "Recommend the worthy without avoiding kin," meaning that even though they were classmates, if he was talented, he could be recruited into the institute. Yang Ping was not one of those who feared that familiar people could reveal his past. Even supposing Yang Ping had secrets to expose, he wouldn't shy away from a qualified talent for fear of having such things revealed. Let them be revealed if necessary; it's not a big deal.

Every time He Zijian responded, Yang Ping offered a faint smile, appearing very content. Meanwhile, Director Wan, through careful observation, had gained confidence. Regardless of any prior contact between this person and Professor Yang, Yang was satisfied with him. Director Wan decided to lend a hand, intending to earn some favor with Professor Yang.

"Professor Yang, do you have any more questions to ask?" Director Wan inquired.

Both Song Zimo and Tang Shun had already posed their questions, so it was time for Yang Ping to ask a few critical questions to conclude, after which other experts could pose supporting questions.
