The new rental car rolled up to the PTRS guild hall on that Tuesday afternoon. The four inside were exhausted and just wanted to relax in their room.
But the tired quartet knew it wasn't going to be that easy.
They knew someone was waiting for them. Who or what that someone was remained a mystery.
Thwap!
Something hit the windshield with a splat.
"What was that?!" Pacifica yelped, not expecting the sudden noise.
A loud groan greeted the girl's hearing next. "Are you fucking kidding me?" Shouri complained.
"What? What is it?" Taika and Pacifica both threw their seatbelts off and pushed themselves up to see what attacked the car.
A very tiny person? Their body looked like an adult woman, though she was incredibly small, probably slightly taller than the tops of their shoes? Adorning her back were two thin almost transparent green wings and a pair of strange stalks which popped out of her black hair.
"Heyyyyy!" She smacked on the window with a tiny fist. "I've been waiting for you!"
Shouri was in the driver's seat, and he responded by turning on the front sprayers.
"Oh naughty boy getting a girl wet?" teased the micro girl.
He then flicked on the windshield wipers, forcing her to jump off the glass.
"What the heck?" asked Pacifica, rubbing her eyes. "That… was a fairy? Right, Sho?" Rebecca tried to confirm. "The little wings and antenna sold me on that." He slammed his head on the steering wheel. "How in the hell did we manage to get a FAIRY of all Resonators as our first resident?!" the guildmaster shouted at the heavens (mainly to curse Sahji).
Regardless, they couldn't hide in the car forever so the quartet hesitantly left the safety of the automobile.
"Brr…" Pacifica shivered. It was quite cold out, even at noon. The cloudless sky didn't provide her the warmth she wanted. She missed the Seirra Islands.
"Hey lover boy, back from a steamy vacation?" The fairy hovered in front of Shouri's face. On instinct, he clapped his hands together, crushing the bug and returning her to the ground from whence she came.
Rebecca put a hand on Shouri's shoulder. "I think we're gonna have to kill this chick, Shouri." "Damn," he replied without missing a beat.
Taika picked up the fairy by the scruff of her dress. "Troppo piccolo…" mumbled the fox.
"Hey!" the tiny girl wrenched herself from Taika's grasp. "I'm big where it counts!" she asserted. "And that is?" questioned Shouri against his better judgment. "My big heart!" boasted the fairy.
Regardless of how much he wanted to put her in a box and ship her to L'estremità based on his first impression of her, Shouri knew he at least owed her a proper conversation.
"Alright, follow me. We're gonna talk." He motioned for the fairy to follow. "Yes!" the tiny girl pumped her fist and floated behind Shouri.
Taika, Pacifica, and Rebecca shared an annoyed glance, nodded, and followed along.
"Ems get out, I need the office," were Shouri's first words to his second-in-command upon entering the room.
"Hello to you too, Guildmaster." Emily rolled her eyes. She noted the fairy floating over his shoulder and it all clicked into place. "Yeah, good luck with that," she mumbled, rising from the seat and making her way to the door.
Shouri sat in his seat and closed the laptop. The three larger Resonators surrounded the desk, glaring down at the fairy who seated herself atop the closed laptop.
"Let's start from the top, who are you?" Shouri began. "Zephyr, from the Luna Moth patch," she replied. "I assume that's like your clan?" he asked. "Bingo! You got a big brain in there handsome," she said with a titter.
Rebecca was about to swat the fly but was held back by Taika's raised arm.
Lacking a swatting, Zephyr was allowed to prattle on. "Though, if you must know, I left our wood because I was bored. Luna Grove is so dull and strict. I want to cut loose, and get my feet wet (among other things). But I know I need a Maestro for that and I heard on the grapevine that you're a hell of a guy." Zephyr looked the young guildmaster up and down. "And they weren't lying," she snarked.
Shouri pushed the anxiety of being well-known down for the moment in favor of focusing on the immediate concern. "Sorry, but we just started this business, so we're not exactly in the best position to care for a fairy at the moment," Shouri stated evenly. "I hoped to get some experience with more average Resonators before we try to place someone with your status."
Zephyr jumped to her feet. "That's okay! Because I've decided you're definitely it!"
Taika now had to hold both Pacifica and Rebecca back. She shoved the other two away from the desk, lest they crush the bug where she stood.

"Party's full, I'm not taking you in," he put his foot down. "But I wouldn't even take up any room in bed! I could sleep on your pillow!" Zephyr pled her case.
Shouri sighed. "Look. Me, Taika, Pacifica, and Rebecca are together."
"Like a polycule?" Zephyr questioned. Shouri chewed on that thought for a moment. With a short shrug, he answered, "exactly." "So just let me in!" "No. We're keeping it closed." "Well, that's no fun."
"That's not your decision to make."
The fairy gulped and stepped back. The rhythm washing over her was intense. It wasn't just from the Maestro in front of her, but the three Resonators behind her. For a moment, she cursed her small frame and the sensitivity it afforded her.
Regardless, she wasn't getting kicked out that easily.
"Let me prove myself! We can play a game. If I win, would you at least consider it?" she tried.
"Piss off!" Rebecca barked. "Who do you think-?!" the fiery vixen was cut off by Shouri's raised hand.
"Fine. But if we win, you'll let PTRS place you with a suitable Maestro, and you won't ever bring this up again, fair?" Shouri offered. "I'll even let you pick the game."
Zephyr grinned, pumping her fist in victory. "I hope you're ready to do some hard considering, 'cause I got this!"
"What's even going on?" Vince asked Emily "That fairy girl is playing some kinda game with Shouri," replied the vice guildmaster. "Hmmm…" the young Maestro hummed, studying the fairy.
Shouri and his trio of Resonators stood in front of the car, while Zephyr floated a small distance away. The crowd of PTRS members stood in front of the guild hall, watching with curiosity. Most wondered about the rare Resonator challenging their guildmaster, but also there was keen interest in what kind of insane leap in power their leader had made since going on yet another training mission.
"This game is simple. Just catch me. I'm not going to go too high or far," Zephyr laid out. "I'll give you five minutes to do so."
"Sure," Shouri agreed. "I think to make it more fair, I'll do this." The Maestro took his trio of tuners off his side, opened the car door, and tossed them into the passenger seat. He stepped out of the way, leaning against the rear driver's side door.
"Girls, take care of the problem," he requested. "Gladly," the trio spoke in unison.
Zephyr hummed for a moment, wondering what scheme they had plotted, but shook it off. "Ready? Go!"
Rebecca was up first, zooming at the tiny target with fire at her heels.
"Oh! Icarus' Ala! Fun one!" Zephyr pivoted around the fox who tried a couple of times to grab the small girl but failed all of her grabs.
"Careful now! Don't want to burn your heels!" taunted the solar element.
As Rebecca tried to grab her from the front, Taika unleashed her beads, firing them at the bullseye that was Zephyr. But even with Rebecca running distraction, Taika couldn't land a hit.
Each jump from the ground-bound fire element earned a fairy's laugh, while every near miss earned taunts from Zephyr.
"Nice one!" "Oooh, you almost had me!" "So close!" "Gonna have to try harder than that sweetie!"
Despite her jeers, the two vixens weren't shaken. They just pursued their target with ruthless efficiency. Even in the heat of their game, Zephyr allowed her gaze to track to Shouri. He was just standing there. He didn't bark orders or offer useless platitudes. He just let his girls do their thing.
She shook momentarily. She wanted that so badly. He was a pretty good looker by her own admission, but that was just icing on the cake – not that they needed to know that.
"Whoops!" another pivot from the fairy found her evading another grab.
Taika's beads tried to close around her, but they were soundly rejected. "Nice try! Just a minute left!" Zephyr dropped another taunt for the fun of it.
"Rebby! Taika!"
Oh? What was the otter doing? She had just stood there up until now. Did she not have anything to contribute? Maybe she was the team ace?
Without a word, the two foxes moved. Well, at least the fire element did. The water element threw open the driver-side door. The lunar's beads flew in, where the fire fox threw up the newly opened hood of the car.
What were they up to? A plastic lid flew out of the engine by an unseen force.
And it ended in an instant.
SPLASH!
With a wave of gloved hands, a blast of windshield washer fluid took the fairy out of the sky. By the time she became aware of her surroundings, Zephyr was firmly in Pacifica's crushing grip.
"GG." Pacifica grinned as she held up the captured fairy like a trophy, making sure to tighten her grip every so often in retribution for the jeers and the situation as a whole.
Zephyr could do nothing but look indignant as she propped her head up. "…damn it," she grumbled, trying and failing to blow her soaked hair off her face.
