Dusk (BL Light Novel)

chapter 148

After some casual back-and-forth, we wiped out the enemy team clean—down to the last man. Strengthened from devouring them whole, we pushed straight down the lane and smashed the tower. The enemy’s respawn was fast, but since our Shaman had come up the lane with us and was hitting the tower too, it wasn’t much of an issue.Right before the tower broke, everyone stopped attacking—and a single message popped up in chat:[Team] FirmPoop (BlackHippo): I’m taking itBlackHippo, our tank, used a special move called Ultra Shortwave to land the last hit.[FirmPoop (BlackHippo) has deactivated the alarm in Zone A-2.]With the tower down, we received a small amount of gold. Combined with the kill I’d picked up earlier, I now had enough to buy another item that boosted my defense. When a tower breaks, the whole team gets gold. And the one who breaks it earns even more. You might think, then, that the DPS should get the last hit to grow stronger—and theoretically, you’d be right. But due to another rule in Lastones, towers almost always needed to be last-hit by the tankiest member of the team. That’s because in Lastones, breaking a tower triggers a “Bounty Designation” on your team. If the designated target is killed, all their cooldowns—including ultimates—get reset, and the killer receives a bonus payout. For the team that’s behind, it’s like a sliver of hope. And the bounty always goes to the player who broke the tower. So naturally, the losing team will throw everything they’ve got at the bounty target. And no matter how good a DPS might be, their low HP and defense make it easy to get overwhelmed if the enemy commits. But they can’t just stay back to avoid the fight, either. That’s why you let a tank take the tower—to lure the bounty and make it harder for the enemy to capitalize. After destroying the tower, we split into two groups again, just like earlier, to farm Hoom and Shaman. Gang Jaegyung moved between the two parties, lighting up the map, and even gave one of the DPS a hand by poking a Hoom that had spawned closer to the enemy tower and pulling it over.[Team] Retaking a Class (Remiel) has requested a hold.[Team] Retaking a Class (Remiel): Don’t push the Shaman here. And his map reading was ridiculously on point. When vision was uncertain, he wouldn’t kill the Shaman outright. He’d let it follow the lane path and collide with our own Shaman, lighting up the area he wanted without even needing wards. He called those shots perfectly.God, this is comfy… If being on the same team as Gang Jaegyung means getting to play games like this all the time, it’s basically heaven. Honestly, the ride quality was a lot better than I expected. As I enjoyed the comfort of this bus and calmly kept feeding kills to our DPS, I spotted the enemy team off in the distance—they’d just respawned and were now busy clearing out their pushed-in lane, killing Shamans. The level gap had started to open, but it was still early enough that they probably thought they could catch up.Should I go crush that little hope?I moved to ping my team to signal an engage—but once again, a firm voice stopped me cold.“Don’t.”“…You don’t even know what I was gonna do. Why not?”“You were about to start a team fight, weren’t you?”Damn psychic.“Why not? We’re winning, we’ve got a 4-level lead, you and Migo both have your ults, isn’t this the perfect time?”“We can kill a few more Hooms first and then go. The last Hoom respawn happened a while ago, and if we start another fight now, it’ll be wasted time.”According to Gang Jaegyung, Hooms don’t spawn on a timer—they only respawn after the previous one dies. So if we kill them first and farm gold, we can use the respawn downtime for a team fight. Then we’ll pick off the next round of Hooms right after and maximize profit. That was his logic. It was rational. Killing underleveled enemies didn’t give much gold anyway, so fighting just because we’re ahead would be inefficient. Managing Hoom spawns alongside team fights really was the better play. I usually tried to play like that too.But still… I wanna fight. I wanna brawl.Feeding Hooms to our DPS like this wasn’t fun. Just standing there, letting AI mobs slap me around? And our team had Gang Jaegyung—if we did start a fight, the odds of winning were high…“Tsk, I said no.”Somehow sensing that I was about to ignore him and ping anyway, Gang Jaegyung suddenly reached out and wrapped his hand gently around mine on the mouse.“We don’t have many ults up right now. We’ve almost cleared all the Hooms, and the enemy’s still near their tower, so we’ve got the advantage. Let’s watch and wait until they come farther up to farm Shamans—then we engage. You know that’s the right call too, right, Mr. Go?”“…”I didn’t want to admit ◆ Nоvеlіgһt ◆ (Only on Nоvеlіgһt) it, so I stayed silent. But it was the model answer, and I had nothing to say.Still… I’m good at covering this kind of fight. Every time I play with another tank, we always just ping the moment the enemy appears on the minimap and dive in without thinking. I’ve gotten used to fighting under pressure like that. But whatever. Gang Jaegyung seemed to be having fun setting up the game like this. And I guess sometimes, it’s nice to have someone else make the calls for once. So I decided to just enjoy the moment. The only regret was that the enemy team was pretty average. If they’d had someone on Gang Jaegyung’s level, this would’ve felt more like a proper match.…Why wasn’t Gang Jaegyung two people? One could be on the enemy team, the other on ours, and we could watch them fight. That’d be fun as hell.“Hey.”“Yes?”“Do some cell division or something. Clone yourself. I want one enemy you and one on my team.”“Human cloning is strictly regulated due to bioethical concerns, so I recommend refraining from such unethical comments.”God, he never lets a joke slide.“…Okay, but say you were cloned. Which version would I get—current you or the clone?”Wait. He did respond to the joke.“That depends. I’d have to think about it.”“What’s there to think about? I’m the real one, obviously. You’d keep me with you.”I threw out a half-assed reply, and he instantly bit back. Seriously, what is this guy?“How can you be sure you’re the real one? If we mix the two of you up and play ‘Guess Which One’s the Clone,’ nobody would know. You’d have to just guess.”“I’m the one who donated the cells, so I’m the original. The clone would be a ‘Gang Jaegyung_Copy’ file.”“He’d just rename himself, delete the _Copy tag, and then I’d be stuck choosing which one to overwrite.”“Creation dates would be different.”“If I have to go digging that deep, I’d rather just pick the one who’s more obedient to me.”Obedient Gang Jaegyung would follow orders, right? If he were on the enemy team, being all nice to me, I’d probably wonder if he could even fight properly. As I mused over it, walking with our DPS to another lane, I suddenly noticed Gang Jaegyung had gone quiet. Was he sulking again?I turned my head to check, and saw him deep in thought, looking unusually serious.“…Should we go for the team fight after all?”Wait, what? I thought you said not to. …Don’t tell me you changed your mind just because I said I’d pick the obedient one?I burst out laughing, unable to resist. Gang Jaegyung still looked serious—but it was no use. He had no idea why I wanted the obedient one, and that made it all the funnier.Honestly… when he’s my enemy, I like him aggressive. When he’s on my team, I like him mild. But if he were only obedient, he’d be boring. I probably wouldn’t even bother to play with him.“What’re you saying? Just keep your eyes on the map.”For someone who always lives by rational thinking, moments like these—when he acts like an idiot—were kind of hilarious. It reminded me that he wasn’t some AI machine pretending to be human, but a real person.Seriously. What a weird guy.I smothered my laughter and returned to the game.“The enemy tank has ult.”“Okay. I’ll cover it.”[HotPoop (Migo) >>> StickyRice (Berry) KILL!!]“I’ve got ult too.”“No, don’t use it. Save it. I’ll handle it.”[Gando (Olavia) >>> PlumpHamster (Miira) KILL!!][HotPoop (Migo) >>> Decaffeinator (Sola) KILL!!]“Enemy support has a knockdown.”“Got it.”[Retaking a Class (Remiel) >>> GodHandWriter (Gazelle) KILL!!]...[FirmPoop (BlackHippo) has deactivated the alarm in Zone A-3.][Dingdigidiridingdigiding (Aegis) has deactivated the alarm in Zone A-1.][The enemy’s alert level has been reduced.][All] StickyRice (Berry): open[All] StickyRice (Berry): just come in lolJust like Gang Jaegyung suggested, we killed all the Hooms and then started the team fight—and we won by a landslide. One of the enemy team’s DPS, disheartened by the continuous losses, typed in chat asking us to just end the game already since he wouldn’t fight back anymore.
