Cultivation: Fortune by Lots

Chapter 136: 115. Celestial Book·Three (Thirty Thousand Words Arrive at the Third Watch)

At night, Lei Jun was already far outside Youpeng Mountain.

He searched around and happened to find a Taoist temple, so he stayed there for the night.

Although the temple was rather ordinary, it still traced its lineage to the Taoist Talisman Sect.

When they saw Lei Jun's talisman badge, everyone at the small temple, upon learning that a Talisman-bestowed Taoist from Dragon Tiger Mountain was staying, was both shocked and delighted.

They took great care to host him, and though the surroundings were plain, Lei Jun did not mind at all.

In the deep silence of night, Lei Jun sat cross-legged, meditating in the quiet chamber arranged for him by the temple, breathing quietly to regulate his qi, then visualizing to preserve his spirit.

When his essence, qi, and spirit each reached their peak, Lei Jun finally took out that strange page of ancient paper.

As his mana made contact, the page unfurled and beams of light flashed across its surface, as if countless mysterious runes and symbols began to appear.

After Lei Jun read them, he felt a stirring in his heart, sensing that the page contained deep and subtle truths, waiting to be contemplated slowly.

[Celestial Book, Volume Three]

Lei Jun, inspired, saw these words float through his mind.

This Celestial Book was not that Celestial Book.

The one referred to by the Heavenly Master Mansion disciples, it likely was something else entirely.

To them, the Celestial Book usually meant the Thunder Law Heavenly Scripture Talismans from the Three Caverns and Three Realms Scripture.

A Celestial Book originated with the Heavenly Law, which is Thunder Method, and it corresponded to the Earth Method Flame Spell, uniting Heavenly Thunder and Earthly Fire.

Yet, the "Celestial Book" now laid before Lei Jun, though its exact content was still obscure, gave him the feeling that it pointed not to Thunder Law, but instead toward the vast universe above.

*He decided to set those matters aside for now.*

Lei Jun's attention lingered on that particular "three" noted there.

*What was the meaning of this "three"?*

*Was it the third page, or the third volume?*

*If so, aside from this page I received today, there must be other chapters...* Lei Jun pondered.

Previously, that best lot had mentioned this opportunity could further expand.

Comparing the two, there seemed to indeed be multiple pages of the Celestial Book.

Yet, after closely examining his luck, the best lot he drew carried no hidden dangers.

This meant, first, that this page of the Book was most likely unowned to begin with; second, if others held further volumes, they almost certainly could not track Lei Jun's copy or claim it as theirs.

So he could safely keep the page.

*But if he tried to find the next parts, the situation might change?*

*Or perhaps, one day, when the Book itself changed, everything would be different again.*

As an opportunity that could be expanded, there were no risks or drawbacks before it was broadened, making it a great best lot.

But taken at face value, once the opportunity expanded, the outcome was unpredictable.

*Yes, better be careful with this in the future...* Lei Jun nodded slightly.

*To say he was not even a little curious about the full Book—that would be a lie.*

*But such things, if gained, are fortune; if lost, destiny. There was no need to force it. Better to follow the Dao and let fate decide...*

Lei Jun was pondering all this when suddenly memories of some novels he'd read on Blue Star before crossing over resurfaced.

*In some stories, treasures like the Celestial Book were hotly contested, sparking endless drama.*

*When the treasure was united, the show would truly begin.*

*Yet in others, these numbered and scattered relics became emblems and communication tokens for secret organizations.*

*Everyone made "online" friends in the fantasy world and such.*

*I wonder what kind mine will be?*

*Alright, he told himself, that old habit was acting up, and he should stop fantasizing about pointless nonsense.* Lei Jun grinned, shook his head, and reeled in his wandering thoughts.

He turned his focus back to this "Celestial Book, Volume Three" itself.

After considering briefly, Lei Jun did not place this page deep within the spirit's True One Altar Cave Heaven.

Nor did he go into an out-of-body spiritual state, immersing himself in the page entirely.

He decided to experience it through normal reading for now.

The symbols and marks on the page differed from any known writing system in the current era.

Yet, as Lei Jun concentrated and sensed the Tao Containment within, he gradually gained understanding.

Sitting cross-legged, his nine-foot tall, four-foot wide Original Talisman drifted above his head, emitting a gentle glow.

Under this light, the mysterious Book page also floated in midair, facing Lei Jun's Original Talisman from afar.

Affected by Lei Jun's mana, strands of radiance gradually streamed from the page and were guided onto his Spirit Talisman.

At that moment, a faint crackling sound suddenly echoed in the chamber.

It was like sparks of electricity leaping about.

Then, the sound grew louder, filling the room without stopping once it began.

It turned into a distinct electric current, humming.

Finally, the sound subtly shifted into thunder.

The rumble grew, even echoing far outside the quiet room.

The temple's Taoists and Tao Boys awoke in alarm. Hearing thunder rumbling as if at their very ears, they were first bewildered, then suddenly recalled that tonight, a real Talisman-bestowed Taoist from the Celestial Master Mansion was visiting.

At once, everyone calmed down.

Whether it was the Thunderclap Talisman among Basic Spirit Talismans, or the Five Thunder Righteous Talisman and Thunder of Thor Talisman among High-grade Spirit Talismans, all were signature spells of the Celestial Master Mansion.

The whole temple, in the end, plugged their ears and pulled up their blankets, going straight back to sleep as needed.

Those still awake dared not disturb Master Lei.

*They could only quietly admire and wonder, if only they, too, could have such lofty cultivation and mana.*

*...Master Lei himself was actually a bit stunned.*

*Is this Book really going to slap me in the face so soon?*

*I was just thinking that this was different from our Thunder Law Heavenly Manual, and the moment I touched it, you gave me this kind of gift?*

*Fine, he had to admit, the ambience in this lightning was pretty nourishing.*

When the spring thunder rolled, all things were born.

Thunder itself always held both creation and destruction, not just the power to destroy.

Lei Jun, nourished by this lightning essence, felt completely refreshed in body and mind.

*Compared with the thunderous spiritual power he'd experienced at home, this offered an entirely new sensation.*

Next, as he concentrated, he discovered the Book page's lightning ambience held notable differences from Dragon Tiger Mountain's Thunder Method.

Especially compared to the Thunder Law Heavenly Scripture Talismans, there were key distinctions.

Lei Jun had not practiced those talismans personally, but had observed Li Zhengxuan and others use them, seen them invoke Heavenly Thunder with the Celestial Master's Sword, and had even entered the Supreme Pure Thunder Mansion Cave Heaven.

So he at least knew that the Celestial Book Talismans practiced in the Celestial Master Mansion, refined through generations of masters, focused on Purple Thunder.

Therefore, whether it was the Yang Thunder Dragon or the Celestial Master's Sword, this Purple Thunder always differed from the lightning of the natural world.

Tang Xiaotang had previously expressed the desire to break new ground, creating an entirely new Thunder Law outside of the Mansion's traditions, and that was precisely the point.

But the thunder produced by Lei Jun's page of the Book was much closer to natural Heavenly Thunder.

Though lacking the Mansion's unique Purple Thunder, the raw, pure power contained within was sublime, with a beauty of returning to nature.

*Lei Jun felt a surge of inspiration and made a few guesses.*

He sat quietly, focusing his spirit and turning over ideas in his mind.

A moment later, the lightning faded.

The sound of wind arose.

A breeze blew out from the Book page.

This time, before the wind could grow wild, Lei Jun's thoughts shifted again.

So next, he witnessed fire and water, as well as other phenomena, emerge together.

Lei Jun watched in silence.

Wind and thunder, fire and water, mountain and marsh...

The phenomena paired off, separated into Yin and Yang.

When he calmed his thoughts, he saw that from that page, two streams of energy, one black and one white, twisted and danced together.

*Was this the principle depicted on this page of the Book?*

*The yin-yang balance in nature, the polarization of the two limits...* Lei Jun gained insight.

One sheet of paper contained all things.

*Lei Jun's discoveries so far were only a general outline.*

*If these principles were explored in depth, most people would struggle their whole lives and still never truly master them.*

But to comprehend them, the path must be walked.

*Lei Jun steadied his mind before the Book page, and, inspired once more, broke into a quiet smile.*

The black-white dual qi around the page dissipated.

Lightning and thunder returned.

Beginning from this point, there was nothing to stand in the way.

The birth of lightning earlier stemmed from Lei Jun's thoughts comparing the Mansion's Thunder Law Talismans and this Book page.

Thus, he would continue from that angle.

A major subject in his current spell studies was precisely the comparison between the Mansion's Yang Five Thunder Righteous Dharma and his own self-developed Yin Five Thunder Righteous Dharma.

Now, using the Taoist principles and ambience passed down from this page, Lei Jun benefited greatly.

Though only a single night had passed, countless new ideas sprang forth in his mind.

At dawn the next day, Lei Jun pushed open the door and stepped out.

He had not slept a wink, but nourished by the Book, his spirit was full and his vigor unmatched.

He greeted the temple inhabitants, apologized for disturbing their dreams, thanked them for their hospitality, and left some incense, gold coins, and Basic Spirit Talismans as gifts before taking his leave.

As for the Taoists and Tao Boys, their reverence for Master Lei soared, but none dared ask him to stay longer.

After tidying up the quiet chamber where Lei Jun had stayed, the whole temple set it aside, enshrining the Spirit Talismans and incense he left.

The divine signs shown at the temple that night startled the nearby villagers, but after the Taoists explained, people flocked to the temple to pray for blessings.

From that day on, its incense flourished, far beyond the past.

After staying just one night, Lei Jun hit the road again.

He kept to his rhythm, traveling by day and cultivating by night.

When he reached the Grand River, he made for a designated ferry crossing.

With his current cultivation, he could not yet leap directly across the Heavenly Chasm of the river.

Using the Breathing Soil Banner would draw too much attention.

Luckily, along the river, the Celestial Master Mansion ran a subsidiary branch, with a ferry port and cloud boats for transporting Talisman Sect heirs between the South and North of the Great River.

So long as the waters were calm, passage was always available.

Similar arrangements existed in other top powers, too.

This was, in fact, one kind of soft power.

The Great Tang Imperial Court likewise had official boats.

If need be, those could be used, though at high cost.

Lei Jun, being an authenticated Talisman-bestowed successor of the Mansion, needed no ticket nor group; he could take a cloud boat and cross the river alone at will.

After crossing south of the Great River on the cloud boat, Lei Jun did not linger, but continued onward to another major Cave Heaven and Blessed Land run by the Mansion outside Dragon Tiger Mountain.

The Red Abyss Cave Heaven.
