It rained last night.
The ground was wet and littered with leaves. Even the wooden table under the tent had been dampened by the rain, making it slightly moist.
Thankfully, the poster was waterproof.
Brother Nan brought over an extra table.
Last night's table was mainly to reserve the spot. To seat four or five people, they needed at least two tables. One was neither enough to sit at nor spacious enough—it would make her, the illustrious Successor of Destiny, seem rather stingy with the club's resources, especially the latter.
Additionally, each person brought their own chair from their dormitory.
"It got wet."
Zhou Li glanced at the black bag Brother Nan was carrying, a bag she had used for many years. "You should have some tissues in that bag, right? Wipe up the water."
"Here!"
Brother Nan pulled out a hair-drying towel from the bag.
Zhou Li didn't say anything. He just took it and wiped the water off the table's surface, carefully soaking up the moisture and flicking off a leaf that had stuck to the poster.
Only then did they all take their seats.
Tuanzi was stuffed by Zhou Li into a drawer of the now-dry table so she could continue sleeping soundly.
It was very early, exceptionally so.
They had all been woken up by Brother Nan, who said they needed to get up early to secure the prime spots. She also claimed that those capable of waking up early after military training either possessed good lifestyle habits or great determination, and that their society needed such talents—among other things.
Brother Nan certainly had a way with words when she wanted to make a point.
However, at this moment, the paths were very quiet. The morning mist hadn't even dispersed, and there were hardly any people around.
The only sounds echoing in the air were those made by the janitors sweeping the ground. The brooms scraped against the rough cement, their SWISH-SWISH crisp and somehow comforting.
"Brother Nan, this humble one is a little hungry!" Mianmian, dressed in Hanfu, raised her hand. Her arm was slender and fair, appearing fragile and delicate.
"What would you like to eat? I, Brother Nan, will personally go buy it for you!"
"A pie with preserved mustard greens and pork belly!" Mianmian requested.
Qian Qian piped up, "Sichuan wontons!"
Baozi, also raising her hand in imitation, added, "Ice cream with grass jelly."
"Who eats ice cream in the morning!"
"Steamed young lamb, steamed bear's paw."
"What flavor of ice cream do you want?"
"Vanilla."
"Alright!"
CLANG, CLANG, CLANG…
In the distance, the faint sound of rolling shutter doors could be heard; the breakfast shops on the commercial street seemed to have just opened.
It was evident just how early it was.
Everyone was a bit speechless, listlessly resting their heads on the table.
Seeing this, Brother Nan quickly mustered a smile and said brightly, "Don't look so lifeless! Liven up! Soon, we'll have lots of fresh, innocent, and cute freshmen eagerly joining our society. Maybe there will even be some 'little puppies.' You all might finally have a chance to find someone!"
Mianmian said listlessly, "My heart belongs only to Huai Xu…"
"Ditto…" Qian Qian chimed in.
"Lord Dumpling is all I need." Baozi hunched over, moving closer to the table drawer and gazing earnestly at the sleeping Tuanzi.
"I can't be bothered with you lot!"
Brother Nan and Zhou Li went out to buy breakfast.
Given that everyone wanted different things, Brother Nan had agreed as a small reward for them getting up so early. They had to visit several shops to get everything. By the time they returned, the street where the recruitment booths were set up was much livelier. Many young men and women, obviously new students, were walking back and forth indecisively.
There were too many societies, making their heads spin.
"Let's hurry back!"
Brother Nan picked up her pace, Zhou Li following.
As they approached their 'stall,' she saw several new students in their spot, either examining the poster, pacing back and forth, or gathered in front of the stall making inquiries.
She couldn't help but feel a touch of excitement.
However, as she got closer, she realized that most of these people were gathered in front of the neighboring Basketball Association and Bicycle Association booths. As for the Probability Society, which was in the C-spot, only one girl with glasses stood before its promotional poster.
Brother Nan steadied herself, slowed her pace, and walked over. She set the breakfast on the table and quietly asked them, "Has anyone asked about our society?"
Baozi shook her head.
Mianmian said, "They're all asking about the booths next to us."
Qian Qian added, "Actually, some people came over to take photos with us."
Brother Nan frowned slightly.
To be honest, she wasn't that bothered. Their main principle for recruiting members was to go with the flow.
But the problem was, seeing the 'business' of the two neighboring societies booming, with an almost bustling crowd gathering, she couldn't help but feel uncomfortable making comparisons. This was especially true since she often dissed the Basketball Association's Club President for his poor skills, and the Bicycle Association's Club President was practically her devoted admirer. This made her feel even worse.
"Let's eat breakfast first."
She distributed the breakfast to everyone.
Once the takeout boxes were opened, the aroma of the food gradually wafted out, attracting quite a bit of attention.
Yet, no one came forward to inquire.
Zhou Li quietly ate his hot and sour noodles and a guokui, his gaze occasionally flicking to the area in front of them.
Their society was called the Probability Society, but the promotional posters, following Brother Nan's central guiding principle, were all about food and fun. Many people lost interest after seeing the name "Probability Society." The few freshmen who might have been interested in 'mathematics' were then put off by the posters.
Zhou Li hadn't been like this last year, but he knew most first-year students had high expectations for societies and student unions. It was essentially an expectation for college life. No matter how they ended up spending their time later, or whether they would be disappointed after joining, few, for now, would want to join a society that seemed neither fun nor promising. They wouldn't even give it a second look.
The few who did take a second look were attracted by the good looks of Brother Nan and Zhou Li, or by Cotton Swab in her Hanfu and JK uniform.
That attraction instantly multiplied when Huai Xu walked over carrying an ergonomic gaming chair and sat down beside them.
But this wasn't entirely a good thing, Zhou Li discovered. Their collective attractiveness now seemed to have exceeded most people's threshold, to the point where it intimidated many shy freshmen. Their glances became even more furtive than before; they only dared to sneak peeks.
"Good morning, everyone! Having breakfast?"
"Did you… climb over the campus wall with that huge chair?" Qian Qian stared at him, dumbfounded.
"Yeah. What's wrong?"
Just when Zhou Li almost thought Qian Qian might spot the 'bug' in Huai Xu's story, he saw her eyes immediately light up.
"That's so cool!"
"It was nothing, really…" Huai Xu replied humbly, then turned his head to look around. "Why isn't anyone coming to ask about our stall? Shouldn't we shout a bit to draw a crowd?"
"Let's just go with the flow!" Brother Nan tried to maintain her composure. As long as she didn't look at what was happening beside them, she could stay calm.
"Why are there so many people next door?" Huai Xu asked.
"...Have you had breakfast yet?"
"Yeah."
"Then just sit here quietly and be our mascot."
"Okay."
Huai Xu propped up his chin, looking left and right.
Out of nowhere, a fluffy little head popped up in front of Zhou Li, its owner looking dazed. At the same time, a small, mangosteen-like paw clawed at the edge of the table, supporting Tuanzi as she crawled out of the drawer and stretched her neck to peer at the tabletop.
"Zhou Li, what are you eating?"
"Lord Dumpling, are you awake?"
"Lord Dumpling smells something!" Tuanzi said, struggling to pull herself up. She peered into his bowl and asked again, "What are you eating?"
"Hot and sour noodles and guokui. Does Lord Dumpling want some?"
"Why didn't you buy Lord Dumpling fish soup with rice~~?"
"It's too early now. There's no fish soup with rice in the morning." Zhou Li temporarily put down his chopsticks. He lifted her out, placed her on the table, and took out her "Head of Recruitment Department" badge from his pocket to hang around her neck. "Brother Nan said everyone has to wear their badge to look official," he explained.
"Oh~~"
"Lord Dumpling, would you like a piece of beef?"
"Lord Dumpling thinks she dreamed about steamed lamb and steamed bear paws…"
Zhou Li glanced speechlessly at Baozi beside him, who returned his look with utter confusion.
When Tuanzi, wearing her badge, sat upright on the table, lifted a little paw to lick it, and began her traditional face-washing ritual, the Probability Society's stall once again captured the attention of passing students. Even the girl in glasses who had walked away earlier came back and stood in front of their stall.
The group perked up.
The bespectacled girl approached Tuanzi, bent down, and peered at Tuanzi's badge, reading it word by word: "Mascot and Great Demon of the Society…"
Tuanzi said earnestly, "Lord Dumpling is very powerful, you know!"
"Can I pet her?" the girl asked, looking at Zhou Li.
Before Zhou Li or Tuanzi could respond, Baozi, who usually didn't talk much, was the first to refuse.
"No, you can't."
"Why not?"
"Lord Dumpling is very aloof."
"Can I pet her if I join the society?"
"No, you can't."
"Why not?"
"Lord Dumpling is very aloof."
"But she looks so well-behaved…"
"She's very aloof!"
Little Cousin repeated this, her expression solemn. She usually had to depend on Lord Dumpling's mood just to get a chance to pet her; of course, other people couldn't be allowed to touch her so casually!
The bespectacled girl seemed somewhat disappointed upon hearing this. She straightened up and looked again at the society's promotional poster.
