"The Supernatural Society is holding an event! Check your phone quickly!"
Brother Nan stared at her phone, somewhat incredulously. "They still have the guts to organize events! And it's the end of the term too! I heard that after last time, that idiot Club President actually set up altars for the Bodhisattva Guanyin, the True Martial Great Emperor, and a crucifix in his dorm."
"That's going to spark an international incident, right?" Zhou Li said uncertainly.
"Who knows."
By then, their ordered dishes had started arriving. The first was a cold dish of lemon ghost chicken. It was intensely sour and spicy, the chicken covered with bright red crushed chili peppers and fresh green lemon slices, a sight that made one's mouth water.
Zhou Li began serving rice to everyone, forming it into pointy mounds.
Under Tuanzi's watchful, gleaming eyes, he also scooped a small heap for her. He shaped the rice into a semicircle and placed it right in the center of her special disposable dish.
Brother Nan continued staring at her phone, sharing the information. "Seems like they're going to a place in school... for an adventure!"
"An adventure at school?" Zhou Li was skeptical. "The principal's office?"
"PFFT! Don't always spout nonsense with such a straight face…" Brother Nan almost burst out laughing.
"So what's there to explore?"
"Apparently, there's a corner of the school surrounded by wasteland where a house awaits demolition. Recently, rumors have spread that it's haunted; two thrill-seeking lovebirds got the fright of their lives there. Huh, where is this place? Why don't I know about it?" Brother Nan looked at her phone skeptically, her fingers flying over the screen. Suddenly, she smacked her forehead. "Oh, I know where it is! I saw it from a distance but never went close."
"I think I've seen it too," Zhou Li said.
"I know about it too," Huai Xu lowered his voice. "There really are a few Little Demons there."
"Hmmm... Lord Dumpling knows too!"
Huai Xu cast a sidelong glance, casually picking some chili from the lemon ghost chicken and putting it in Tuanzi's bowl. "Eat your food!"
Tuanzi looked at him, then at Zhou Li and Brother Nan, feeling a bit left out.
Not happy.
Brother Nan was curious. "What kind of Demons?"
"Little Demons!"
Huai Xu shoveled a big mouthful of rice. "The school is clean, and the environment is good. Demons like these places; it's not strange. Several Little Demons live there. They're foolish and haven't learned how to hide from humans yet. They only know it's a secluded spot where people usually don't go unless they're incredibly bored, so they're somewhat unrestrained."
"That makes sense~~" Brother Nan nodded, half understanding. She paused then asked, "How do you know all this so well?"
"I... I live around here, of course. I need to be very familiar with the local area!"
"Oh~~"
"Either he went to fight with them, or he went to play with them," Zhou Li revealed. "Maybe he even got rejected."
"You—you're talking nonsense!" Huai Xu's eyes widened; his reputation couldn't be damaged. "Those are just kids who haven't grown up! How could I, the Great Devil King, possibly fight with them?"
"Oh."
Zhou Li understood.
Since they were just kids who hadn't grown up, Huai Xu could indeed get along with them.
Meanwhile, a fluffy little claw began incessantly scratching his arm, tickling him. He turned to see Lord Dumpling panting, her cute pink tongue lolling out like a Husky's, and she was inhaling sharply, her eyes teary.
"It's on fire!"
"Lord Dumpling's tongue is on fire!"
"Zhou Li, quickly get water for Lord Dumpling!"
"..."
「Before they knew it, it was the end of June.」
Heavy rains had started falling all across the country. Chunming was also affected, with the weather these days mostly consisting of light or intermittent rain.
However, the light rain and showers in Chunming were probably just a bit cloudier and gloomier than usual. Whenever you looked up, you could always find a small patch of blue in the sky. Rain would fall, typically at night, in a small section of the city, lasting only a short while.
You'd be lucky to get caught in the rain.
It didn't affect watching the sunrise or sunset.
「The last exam was over.」
After Zhou Li had carried Brother Nan on her back for two days, she felt it would be too shameless to keep pretending to be lame, so she started bouncing around energetically.
"I've got something fun to tell you!" she said, walking ahead with light steps. She occasionally turned to look at Zhou Li while walking backward. "Today, during an exam, Qian Qian got a delivery call out of the blue—BRRRING BRRRING! Instinctively, she picked it up. By the time she hung up, she was already out of the exam. Clicking 'continue' was useless. HAHAHA! It killed me!"
"Schadenfreude."
"Schadenfreude is fun!"
"..."
"Where's Huai Xu?" Brother Nan suddenly asked again.
"He's here."
"He hasn't come out."
"Right."
It was 7 p.m., barely evening. They were on their way to attend the Supernatural Society event.
「Ten minutes later.」
About a dozen people stood scattered along the road next to the wasteland, the squint-eyed Club President among them. However, unlike his spirited demeanor during the last event, his complexion was somber this time, and his legs were even trembling.
Zhou Li and Brother Nan were the last to arrive, right on time.
The rest had arrived early due to a mix of nerves, excitement, or fear, eager to stick together. After all, the couple's ghost encounter post on the forum a few days ago had been very detailed, and the Supernatural Society's Immortal Pen event last semester had scared many. These youths, already fascinated by the paranormal, were beginning to believe that some things truly existed.
Upon arriving, Zhou Li scoped out the scene.
Aside from the Club President, there were a few familiar faces in the crowd who had participated in the Immortal Pen event.
The wasteland ahead was actually a leveled construction site. The school had initially planned to clear this land to build a research facility, but for various complicated reasons, the plans were shelved, leaving an old courtyard building untouched. The sky was still quite bright. Instead of appearing spooky, the small courtyard, sitting quietly on the leveled land against the backdrop of golden clouds at dusk, actually possessed a certain beauty. Lush, thriving trees even grew inside its walls.
Brother Nan leaned close to Zhou Li. "Are you scared?"
Zhou Li just gave her a look.
"Emmm..." Brother Nan fell silent for a moment, then squeezed Zhou Li's hand and whispered, "It's no fun if neither of us is scared. How about this: you pretend to be a bit nervous so I can comfort you, huh?"
"..."
Almost simultaneously, the Club President's slightly trembling voice also rose. "Comrades, I'll be a senior next year. I'm glad everyone could stay to join this event after the exams. This might be the last event I organize for the Supernatural Society, and it's the one for which I've mustered the most courage. It's regrettable that the Supernatural Society hasn't flourished under my leadership, but I believe that one day, its name will echo throughout the entire campus..."
He rambled on for quite a while.
Finally, the group set foot on the wasteland, heading toward the small courtyard.
Brother Nan muttered near Zhou Li's ear, "If they want to make the Supernatural Society famous across campus, this won't cut it. It's not even dark yet; ghosts wouldn't show up even if they were real. They should wait until nightfall, scare a few people out of their wits—then they'd be successful..."
As usual, Zhou Li let her words go in one ear and out the other.
Huai Xu, however, nodded repeatedly.
He turned to look at the Club President, planning to help him out—
Just as the exploration team reached the courtyard gate, he dashed ahead and amiably opened it for them.
A CREAK echoed.
The grating sound left the crowd stunned. It was as if an invisible host within the courtyard was welcoming their arrival.
