Grand Voyage: I Start My Journey With A Ghost Ship!

chapter 16

A siren of about two meters in length appeared, its massive fish tail dragging on the ground to support its body. The siren returned to its cavern, only to freeze dead in its tracks at the sight of the two people before it, especially the man, Yang Yi, whose hands were still wrapped around the neck of a corpse. But it recovered quickly, its lips parting to release a captivating song.【You hear a beautiful, captivating melody. You are Charmed. Sanity -5】Yang Yi’s movements ceased. He dropped the corpse, his arms falling limply to his sides.“Damn it, that idiot got charmed again!”Su Na gripped her dagger, preparing for a fight to the death. She doubted this siren would keep her around as emergency rations. A single bead of cold sweat trickled down her forehead.Yang Yi, on the other hand, seemed utterly mesmerized. He stumbled towards the siren, his steps light and unsteady as if he were drunk on her song. She was a stunning creature, a standard of beauty with flowing, golden waves of hair and exquisitely delicate features. She possessed the voice of an angel, skin like glowing white porcelain, and a figure that was tall, voluptuous, and sexy. But at the same time… she also possessed teeth sharp enough to crush a skull, claws that could effortlessly slice open a stomach, and a fish tail powerful enough to snap human bones.Completely under her spell, Yang Yi drew close and nestled into her embrace as if seeking a hug…The siren, for her part, seemed quite taken with this particular prey and held back her attack. Her gaze softened. She opened her mouth several times, but couldn't bring herself to bite down.“Apologies,” Yang Yi whispered into her embrace. “But… we’re not exactly the same species.”【Sanity below 50. You enter a Frenzied State. STR +2, AGI +1, CON +1, SPI -2. Immune to most abnormal mental statuses…】At some point, Yang Yi had already drawn his flintlock pistol, pressing the muzzle against the underside of the siren’s chin, aiming straight for its head.By the time the siren sensed something was wrong, it was too late.BOOM!The gunshot was deafening, its reverberation trembling through the air. The flintlock, not letting him down this time, had fired on the first try, its report echoing throughout the entire cavern. The sharp, broken piece of bone tucked into his waistband would not be needed after all.“You can resist the charm? Then what was all that before? You just followed it on purpose?” Su Na's bright red eyes were filled with utter confusion. “And your gun… the sound is so strange. It actually cost me a point of sanity!”Just one point…Yang Yi instantly seized on the key detail. This woman was definitely not normal! Even with a Spirit stat of 8, Yang Yi himself had lost 3 sanity points the first time he heard that shot!He offered no explanation, simply taking a step back as the siren's now-headless corpse slowly slumped to the ground, twitching uncontrollably. A shower of viscous, dark-red fluid and bits of flesh splattered all over him.Su Na immediately ran over. She looked at the siren’s body with a hint of regret.“Your gun is way too powerful. Couldn't you have aimed somewhere else? I wanted a complete siren head.”She produced a bottle from somewhere and began collecting the siren's blood, brain tissue, and surface mucus.“What do you think you’re doing?” Yang Yi frowned, quickly snatching a piece of flesh and stuffing it in his pocket as a reminder to her. “I killed it. The loot is mine!” After all, the gacha machine only needed a small tissue sample before the system would recycle the monster’s corpse, preventing any chance of using the same body twice.Hearing this, Su Na stopped what she was doing and looked up at him, considering.“Alright, how about this: you leave one complete corpse for me, and I’ll give you all the resources on my ship, plus an extra month of sea chart guidance. Deal?”Yang Yi only needed a moment to think it over before agreeing. This siren’s combat power was less than that of the Drowned. Without its song, most adult men with a spear could take one down on land. Her loot probably wouldn't be anything special; the sea chart was far more valuable.“You said before that the interval between batches of sirens returning to the nest was about 15 minutes, right?” Yang Yi asked.“That’s right. The three intervals were 20 minutes, 17 minutes, and 18 minutes,” Su Na replied, confirming she remembered clearly.“Well, you can add a new data point to your list: less than two minutes!”Yang Yi yanked Su Na toward him. A split second later, two sirens burst from the pool behind her, lunging for the spot where she had just been standing, only to hit empty air. Just moments before, Yang Yi had noticed ripples on the pool's surface and was instantly on alert. The second he saw a head break the surface, he pulled Su Na to safety, «N.o.v.e.l.i.g.h.t» saving her from the ambush. The two sirens, much smaller in size, leaped from the pool. Upon seeing the corpse on the ground, they flew into a rage, letting out guttural, threatening hisses. Their pale skin began to flush red as they bared their mouths full of sharp teeth. The enchanting melody started again, this time a duet. The sound was somewhat shrill, echoing sharply inside the cave. Even Su Na felt dizzy and overwhelmed by the noise.【The song is piercing, yet captivating. Sanity -5】Although Yang Yi was immune to the charm, the sound still made his chest feel tight and his eardrums ache. It even started to drain his health. He immediately raised his pistol and took aim.Click! The gun misfired.“Let’s go! Get outside, now! The space in here is too small. Their song is just bouncing off the walls, it puts us at a disadvantage!” Yang Yi said decisively.Su Na was in a bad state, blood trickling from one ear as she stood there in a daze. Yang Yi grabbed her hand and began pulling her toward the cave entrance.Thankfully, the sirens weren’t fast. Lacking legs, their fish tails weren’t well-suited for land, slowing them down considerably. The two of them successfully rushed out of the cave. By then, Su Na had recovered and no longer needed Yang Yi’s help.“Your pistol doesn't need reloading, but it misfires from time to time, doesn't it?” she asked.Yang Yi frowned, a flicker of annoyance crossing his face. This woman had a habit of paying attention to things she shouldn't, things that were of absolutely no benefit to her. They continued to run. Yang Yi wanted to stall for time until his flintlock’s cooldown was over, which would make for an easier fight. But they didn't get far before they stopped. Before them was a churning, murky sea. The island was mostly submerged; there was no more road ahead.Overhead, there was no sunlight, only a thick blanket of dark clouds and a torrential downpour. A world lit only by the occasional flash of lightning, which was followed by a deafening clap of thunder.A sea storm.Yang Yi immediately remembered the system announcement that had warned of a major storm's approach.“I haven’t had a chance to tell you, the storm started two days ago. All the other players are desperately trying to escape this stretch of sea right now,” Su Na explained.“And you’re telling me this now?!”“Would it have made a difference? We still had to deal with the sirens, didn’t we?” Su Na seemed perfectly calm. She had a point. If they didn’t take care of the sirens, they’d be hunted down in the middle of a storm, which wouldn’t be a pleasant experience…Mentally counting the seconds, Yang Yi glanced back. The two sirens were still nearly twenty meters away. By the time they closed to within five, the flintlock's cooldown should be just about up. And five meters was a range he felt confident in. He could probably make the shot.He raised the gun and began to aim, holding his breath, concentrating. The moment the sirens entered the five-meter range, he pulled the trigger.BANG!The gun roared, and a severed arm flew into the air.But the siren's head was still intact. He had missed his mark.“You’re a terrible shot,” Su Na commented flatly.“Like you’re any better!” Yang Yi shot back, unfazed. “You take the one with the missing arm! I’ll handle the other one and come back to help you!”“Fine!”They broke apart, each sprinting toward their target.
