Book 11A - The Debt - Chapter 13

The rest of the night went smoothly.

The crowd died down once our food was brought out. There were plenty of side conversations, but Harror had made her decision and wasn't entertaining any questions about it.

After we finished eating, guards escorted Farsch out of the room, and Harror took Trent to some other corner.

Yorn left Aryn to deal with the crowd of supplicants who were trying to kiss up to the new boss and came over to our side of the table. He motioned for Suna and Hye to join us.

"Well, I did not have that on my bingo card for tonight." He looked over at his daughter. "You are aware of what this means for you?"

Gesai looked at me, then back at her father. "I'm not leaving the Cathedral to come work at the hospital."

"You don't have to leave right now." Yorn grinned. "But you are the heir now." He looked at me. "And as much as it would cause a stir to rebrand as the Vowler Medical Centers, you don't strike me as the administrative type."

I shook my head. "No, sir."

"Well, I don't plan on dying anytime soon, but I should probably get some levels in." He turned to his sister. "Sue! I was just talking with Gessy about doing a farming run. I need to bulk up a few levels if I'm going to be running the place. Want to come along?"

"Have you gotten to thirty-six yet?" Suna glanced at her husband before looking at her brother.

"Nope. Thirty-four." He shrugged. "I thought I'd be in surgery for the rest of my life. Not much use for Dungeon runs when I'm busy taking arrows out of students."

"I can take you to the event floor." Hye smiled. "But I think your daughter could take you higher than me."

"Oh, really?" The silver man turned to his daughter. "What level has Trent pulled you up to?"

Gesai rubbed her wrist and looked at me.

I shrugged. "How high did you get helping to close those Dungeon Breaks?"

She tucked a stray red hair behind her pointed ear. "Sixty-one."

"You're WHAT?!" Yorn coughed. "That's higher than anyone in the family!" He glanced over at Farsch's empty seat. "Uncle Farsch was on in the low fifties!" He chuckled. "Maybe I should just step aside and let you take over."

"NO!" Gesai stepped behind me and squeezed my hand.

I winced as she broke it again. I wasn't sure how many times an injury could be healed before it developed issues. I'd heard old Adventurers complain about aches and pains even though the injuries had been healed to almost perfect. Recovery spells only accelerated healing, which usually left scars and other issues, especially if there were bone fragments or other foreign objects that got healed inside the wound.

"Sorry." Healing magic knit the bones back together.

"It's okay." I patted her hand. I knew she wasn't trying to hurt me; she just needed some reassurance right now. A few itchy fingers was a small price for me to pay for her peace of mind.

"Gesai already has a place with us." I cleared my throat. "We've got plans to become an Adventuring party."

"Really?" Yorn nodded. "So you just need a good administrative assistant to handle things while you're on a dive." He turned to his sister. "Speaking of administrative assistants. I need someone to run the Mundane medical wing." He smirked. "You wouldn't be interested in coming back to the family, would you?"

Suna looked at her husband.

Hye shrugged. "I've always said I could work with your brother."

"Great!" Yorn clapped his hands. "I'll get someone to draw up paperwork, but in the meantime, consider yourselves to have the full backing of the Alard name." He looked at his daughter. "Why don't you come by the hospital sometime and we can get things fixed up?" He motioned at the four of us. "And bring your team."

"Oh, this isn't my class." Gesai looked at me, Ether, Justia, and Aelin, then back at her father. "I had a sub take them into the Dungeon while we were here."

"Really?" Yorn shrugged. "I have a feeling you're about to get a lot busier now that Harror has her hooks in your mentor." He studied his daughter's face. "Think you can handle it?"

Gesai nodded; this time when she squeezed my hand, she didn't break it. "Yes."

"Good!" Yorn smiled and clamped his hand on my shoulder. "Welcome to the family."

I nodded. "Thanks."

"Now, how about we go talk to the masses?" Yorn took his sister's hand. "So many people worried about losing their titles." He clicked his tongue as the two of them walked back into the crowd, with Hye beside them.

I noticed Gileon glaring at us from his table. The golden man's face was covered in rage. I didn't blame him for being upset. He'd just lost his future that he'd been so proud of. I wasn't worried that he'd try something against Gesai. Like her father said, she was the highest-level person in their family at the moment. My main concern was what he was going to do to retaliate against my friends.

"Well…" I looked at Justia and Aelin. "Who's ready to leave?"
