Daoist Competition

Chapter 14 Success and Failure are Both Burdens of the Family Name

To the east of the Dragon Abyss Marsh belonging to the Mingcang Sect, there stands a towering cliff of a thousand lengths, encircling the sea like a crescent moon embracing the waves within its arms. This place is known as Raging Wave Rock, where every time the vast waters surge forth, they crash against the reefs, stirring up thousands of waves, creating a magnificent sight.

As the Elixir Tasting Ceremony commenced, those from the Mingcang Sect's Twelve Great Families, as well as noble family disciples eager to witness the grand occasion, gathered here, numbering over ten thousand.

However, those lower-level disciples who had yet to master the art of flying could only stand outside the high cliff, crowding the dozens of enormous rocks outside Raging Wave Rock to the brim. Sweating profusely and exhaling heavily, they all craned their necks to gaze towards the event in anticipation.

The Ming Qi disciples, meanwhile, rode Dharma Device Flying Boats, floating and gliding through the air. They scattered like stars across the sky, and above their heads were hundreds of Xuan Guang disciples, calling friends together, moving dynamically, surrounded by flashing colors and rainbow lights forming dazzling radiance.

Further above were forty to fifty Hua Dan Realm cultivators, each sitting within Flying Towers and Suspended Cars. Within these towers, servants, female attendants, and powerful warriors moved back and forth, bringing immortal brews, rare fruits, and exotic delicacies. Familiar acquaintances connected their golden bridges, linking towers and homes, exchanging toasts and well-wishes. Gazing from afar, one could see clouds of smoke blending and floating, with shimmering glimmers forming clusters of cloud-like magnificence.

The noble family disciples adhered to strict hierarchical divisions, each standing within their designated space according to their clan name and cultivation rank, not daring to breach any rules.

At the highest point, above the Heavenly Cloud, lay a realm of resplendent rainbows, with a thousand flowers dancing, falling leaves swirling, and colors shining everywhere.

Zheng Hongtu, the clan leader of the Zheng Family, also known as Master Zheng, sat on a bronze divan supported by twelve Dragon Geese. This artifact was adorned with treasure jade, Yingluo ornaments, lamps, tortoise shells, coral, and colorful pearls. It was crowned with a canopy, draped with fragrant silk ribbons, and backed by a massive jade-green screen shaped like a crescent moon embedded in the azure sky. It emitted countless rays of dazzling light and auspicious energies, projecting an extremely magnificent presence.

Zheng Hongtu occupied the central main seat, while seated at the lower sides were the clan leaders of the Du and Tian families. Though other clans had sent representatives, since none among them were Nascent Soul True Masters, they did not qualify to sit on par with these three figures. Apart from the three leaders, there were two unfamiliar Nascent Soul True Masters seated separately on the flying platforms.

Looking up, the crowd saw one of them with twin-braided hair, dressed in a dark-blue vestment robe, with a black silk belt around the waist, holding a carved jade Ruyi. However, this individual's face appeared blurry and indistinct, making it impossible to discern their features. The other True Master stood tall and solitary, with no belongings on their plain Daoist robe and empty sleeves. Gazing upon them even briefly made one's eyes feel pierced like needles, forcing observers to avert their gaze.

Below, disciples murmured amongst themselves, trying to guess the identities of the two enigmatic figures.

One disciple who recognized them dared not point directly but bowed their head slightly and whispered to others, "The one holding the Ruyi is Master Tian from the Yuxiao Sect. The Tian and Du families are linked by marriage; hence, Master Tian was invited to attend this ceremony."

With a quick glance at the plain-robed Daoist, the disciple hastily withdrew their gaze and cautiously added, "And that individual is Master Xu from the Shaoqing Sect. She is actually a female cultivator and achieved the Nascent Soul Realm only recently, which is why her name is not well-known."

The crowd was startled, not expecting that the slender and seemingly towering figure of Master Xu was actually a female cultivator. Some curious individuals tried to look at her again, only to find their eyes stinging painfully, causing tears to stream down. They dared not glance any further.

Beyond these five Nascent Soul True Masters stood an elderly Daoist with streaks of black and white in his hair. This old Daoist had chosen an isolated spot, sitting alone and drinking by himself, with an unpleasant expression on his face.

This man was Elder Gong from the Shangming Institute, a representative of the lineage of master and disciple.

After the news of the Elixir Tasting Ceremony had spread, many disciples from the master-disciple lineage wished to attend to broaden their horizons but were all ordered by their elders to remain within the sect and forbidden to attend.

Since this was an important Elixir Tasting Ceremony within the Mingcang Sect, the master-disciple lineage could not entirely avoid being present. Consequently, the elders chose Elder Gong, who had long been estranged from his peers and had the longest lifespan, to attend on their behalf.

When Elder Gong learned that only Zhang Yan from the master-disciple lineage would also attend, he immediately concluded that his presence was bound to result in ridicule and humiliation—a deeply disgraceful affair. He adamantly refused to go. However, the Sect Leader insisted that he must attend, leaving Elder Gong no choice but to comply. Now, unwilling to converse with the noble families, he merely drank sullenly, internally cursing those who forced him into this situation, his resentment cycling through each of them one by one.

A young man in luxurious attire also controlled a Flying Tower located in the northeastern corner, subtly distancing himself from the crowd and cordoning off a large area to prevent anyone from approaching.
