Learning to be a Menace [Monster Evolution/Academy/LitRPG]

Chapter 194: Tier 3 Ice Tribulation Pt. 4

Winal looked over at Niwla. He needed some sort of confirmation before he willingly gave up control to Alwin.

The Cold Turkey once again gnawed on one of the feathers on his wing.

He didn't want to do it, but he had to do it.

With much apprehension, Niwla nodded.

"You heard the bird," Alwin said to Winal. "Now, give Papa the controls."

Winal slunk out of the control seat, while Alwin hopped, did a somersault, and made a perfect landing, his folds jiggling as he did so.

Ten points!

Too bad there was no one there to judge his fabulous performance other than him.

There was a flash of light. Flames died out, while sparks were grounded. Alwin the Yin-Yang Slime had made a glorious return. And he regretted it oh so much.

It was freezing buckets out here. He lacked the natural Ice Resistance Niwla had as a Cold Turkey, or the warm flames of Winal's Crimson Gold King Ant. All he had was a couple of jiggly folds that weren't going to jiggle anymore if he stayed here any longer.

The snow-dragon growled. It was soft like snow, yet menacing like hail.

How dare it?

The only menace here was him.

Now that that quick internal monologue had warmed up his brain, he could finally get started on his plan. And maybe try to avoid the snow-dragon that breathed down on him.

It opened its mouth, revealing rows upon rows of sharpened stick teeth. Like all the other snow creatures, snow accumulated around them.

It was going to chomp down on him.

How basic.

Alwin just had to roll out of the way, which might be a problem because his bottom seems to be sunk in the snow.

The snow-dragon's head lunged forward.

Another problem.

It wasn't about to munch down on him like a little frozen jelly treat. It was about to unleash a frigid breath that was worse than his morning breath. A huge puff of frozen wind exhaled out of the snow-dragon's mouth.

Yup, being breathed on was infinitely worse than being bitten.

Also, Alwin was still stuck in the snow.

Nothing like a little Species Skill to help him out.

Darkness flooded out of his Core, surrounding his body as he was forced to shout, "Dark Tackle!"

But just before the skill forcibly moved him forward, Alwin angled himself downwards. He found himself tunneling deeper into the soft snow. Above him, the snow-dragon breathed out mouthfuls of frigid cold air laced with hardened snow bullets.

The hole above him was filled up, leaving him shrouded in darkness.

That was okay, he was a Yin-Yang Slime, darkness was part of the package—well, half of it anyway. What wasn't was how cold it was. It was warmer than outside. Something to do with how snow was a good insulator and how the wind chill just made everything chiller.

If only he had some chilli. He could counteract the chill from the Tribulation. No idea if that's how it worked, but they both had chill in their name, and one was a bit hotter than the other.

Now came the next part of his plan.

He needed to grab the snowcoat, grab the vials out of it, then get the pills out of the vial, and finally get the pills into those snow thingies. They weren't monsters, that was for certain. Don't ask how; he could just feel it in his gut. He could also feel the snow pressing up against it, which made him feel even colder.

Dammit Niwla.

You should've just overdosed on the Small Ice Resistance Pills. That way, he wouldn't have to deal with both the cold and the snow abominations.

"I can hear you, you know," Niwla said.

Oh shoot. He was narrating out loud.

"Just get it over and done with, or I'm taking control again. Also, can't you just use my Cold Turkey form?"

He would never do something as disgraceful as becoming a turkey. At least not willingly.

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

"Whatever."

Alwin swiveled sound on his behind, trying his best to reorient himself. A bit hard in the dark, but that was okay; he had planned for this.

Based on what he remembered seeing—because he had been keeping track of the snowcoat this whole time while Winal was being knocked silly—the snowcoat should be approximately seven-eight of an Alwin turn.

He spun around clockwise, exactly seven-eighths.

"Why didn't you just spin a little bit the other way around?" Niwla asked.

"It's part of the process. You wouldn't understand."

Now, the snow coat should be directly in front of him. Unfortunately for him, he didn't know how many Alwins away he was from the coat. That's okay, that would be a problem for future him.

Again, unfortunately, present him was very quickly about to become future him.

Darkness surrounded his body as he shouted, "Dark Tackle!"

Alwin charged forward, tunneling through the layers of snow. He used another Dark Tackle and another surging forward. Behind him, the tunnel of snow that he created was slowly being filled up, leaving him and his tiny pocket.

This should be far enough. And if it wasn't, he'd tunnel some more. If it was too little, he'd tunnel some more, but in the opposite direction.

Alwin turned upwards, only to feel something tickle his nose. It felt like snow, but more slippery, slimy. Almost like a little tongue.

Nope, not going to find out the hard way.

This time, light flooded out of his Core as he shouted, "Glimmer Ray!"

A small beam of light shot forward, piercing through the snow and illuminating his surroundings. What he saw caught him off guard—not like he was on guard in the first place.

A long, silken, snowy tongue, with bits of orange mashed up inside. Alwin was staring at the snow-snake. Sharp stick fangs stared back at him, as the snowy-carroted tongue licked his face again.

Yeah, this one was definitely going to chomp down on him. He wasn't going to let that happen.

"Dark Tackle!"

Still facing upwards, Alwin found himself rocketing forward. He bashed the snow-snake, pushing it aside, feeling something sharp and cold piercing through his jelly membrane.

Light graced him.

He was out on the surface again.

Surprisingly, so was the snow-snake.

Wait… That meant.

Looking down, he saw the snow behind him start to grow into a mound.

Nope, not dealing with that again.

Alwin used Dark Tackle, bursting out of the way from an eruption of snow. Behind him was the snow-horse, charging straight at him.

He chained multiple Dark Tackles together, punching through the frigid chill. But it wasn't enough. He was just too cold. Teeth chattering, jelly not jellying.

The snow-horse kicked him with its thick log feet, and Alwin found himself flying through the air once more.

He tumbled to the ground, rolling into a snowball. Guess he was technically a snow-slime now. Well, not any longer.

Peering through the snow that covered his body, he saw what he had been searching for. The snowcoat and the many wonderful pills stored within it.

He rolled himself closer, piling even more snow onto him. Behind, the snow-goat was charging at him; he didn't need to look to know that he was going to get pierced with snow-covered stick horns. Not unless he had something to say about it.

Using his mouth, he retrieved the vials from the snow coat.

"Quick, eat a Small Healing Pill!" shouted Niwla.

"No. This first."

He popped open the cork to the vial containing the Small Ice Resistance Pill. He gripped the neck of the bottle with his mouth, tilting it upwards, letting the small marbled-sized pills fall into his maw.

"What are you doing?" Niwla screeched.

"Just watch," Alwin said.

He turned toward the charging snow-goat. With his cheeks puffed out, he spat out a single Ice Resistance Pill. It spun in the air, saliva sliding off its curved surface.

The pill hit the snow-goat, tearing through its body. Sticks, carrots, and buttons fell to the ground around it.

"Wait. What?" Niwla said. "What just happened?"

"The pills resist ice, right. So the pills resist them. Well, they're more ice-adjacent, so it's close enough. "

"How does that make sense?"

"I dunno." Alwin shrugged. "It just does."

Instead of doing the Niwla thing of grabbing the Small Healing Pills to heal himself, he did the Alwin thing of finishing everything off in one fell swoop.

The snow-monkey charged at him, using all four of its snow paws to propel itself forward.

Alwin spat out another Ice Resistance Pill.

It soared through the air only for the snow-monkey to dodge out of the way. Alwin spat out two more Ice Resistance Pills, only for the snow-monkey to dodge out of the way again.

The moment the snow-monkey held a paw to its behind, Alwin decided that enough was enough. He was cold, sleepy, and in desperate need of some playtime. Sorry, snow-rooster, snow-dog, and snow-pig. You weren't getting any chance in the limelight.

Alwin spun on his behind like a disco ball, the frost actually helping him for once as he managed to spin really fast. He began to spit out the Ice Resistance Pills, turning into a disco ball of icy doom. They pierced through the snow, or at least he assumed that was what happened. Everything was just a literal blur.

Soon, the barrage ended. Out of breath and dizzy, Alwin slowly skidded to a halt. Through the nausea that made him want to spit out more than the Ice Resistance Pills, he realized that the System Screens had stopped spewing out snow. On the ground were debris of carrots, sticks, and buttons. Everywhere else on the snow-covered ground were small little holes. That was most likely where the Ice Resistance Pills had ended up.

All of a sudden, the snow vanished, along with the System Screens, leaving Alwin to plummet those eight or so inches back onto the floor.

A sudden chill caused him to look up before he could tend to his sore bottom.

It was Ice.

The Tribulation Being lowered down the pair of sunglasses over its Ice Cube head. It locked eyes with Alwin only to shake its head.

What? What did he do wrong? Other than causing them a ton of trouble with all of the investigation stuff, even though he could just tell them the truth. That couldn't possibly be it, could it?

Before he could even open his mouth, Ice disappeared.

Before he could even come up with another excuse in his head, he was forcibly turned into a Cold Turkey.

Before he could take Niwla's form out for a quick test drive, light bombarded him.

Evolution.
