Sophia and Dav have discovered an ancient network of artificial intelligence-run facilities that date back to before the Kestii Empire became the Broken Lands. They've only managed to restore one link so far, but it took them from the Skylands to just outside the Maze, where they found a mystery waiting for them.

Why are the people who enter the Maze with the backing of the Arena more likely to survive than the people who have only the backing of the Vocational Registry? What secrets does the Arena above Tiwaz's ruined complex hold, other than a device that can instantly heal and even return the recently deceased to life … as long as they are close enough and it has enough stored mana?

Investigating the Arena's secrets seems especially important because those secrets are about the Maze, which holds Gateways that may be the only way home for either of them. Surviving to reach a Gateway would be nice, especially for Dav. Sophia hasn't thought to ask if the others would want to come or not; that's something to settle once they're there. Taika, Ci'an, Xin'ri, and Jax are all interested in entering the Maze, and that's enough for now.

They still aren't aware of just how much attention they've drawn. Several powerful individuals have their eyes on Sophia and Dav, all with different reasons and different goals. The Wanderer wants them to be happy more than he wants them to fulfill his plans, but that isn't true of everyone watching the team.
