Chapter 372: Will This Team-up Even Work?Translator: EndlessFantasy Translation Editor: EndlessFantasy Translation
Early the next morning, the greatest Demigod sorcerer in the Fairy Kingdom was summoned to the palace.
Roy Dryadspeak — more famously known as Morningstar Sage — hailed from an ancient family; this family co-founded the Kingdom alongside the First Fairy King. As such, the family’s name commanded respect from all and sundry. This Demigod Sorcerer, however, had more to him than met the eye. He was the most capable enfant terrible the Dryadspeak bloodline had spawned in thousands of years. He mastered the sorcery of humans at a very young age and became a Demigod three hundred years ago. His existence had flipped the stereotype that fairies could not learn magic on its head.
For someone with this much prestige, even the Fairy King had to show some restraint and respect when addressing him. Therefore, Morningstar Sage was surprised when he was boorishly summoned by the ruler of the kingdom. Multiple summonses were sent, leaving Morningstar Sage no choice but to leave the luxurious breakfast banquet he was having at home, just to rush to the palace at top speed. He grimaced at the fact that he would have to make do with the King’s royal breakfast.
Soon after he arrived, someone else did: Green Sword Saint. He was the renowned Demigod sword-knight, who was also known as Finnon Starlight. Were he living in human society, his moniker would have caused some raised eyebrows. However, it was understandable that, unlike humans, the fairies had no idea what the color ‘green’ implied.
These were two of the Fairy Kingdom’s four Demigods, and they were rivals but best friends. They also occupied the same social class. When they caught sight of each other at the palace, they greeted each other briefly. They were unsure of the purpose for which they were summoned.
The Wise Mad King soon arrived, entering the hall alongside four people in black cloaks.
As soon as Green Sword Saint saw the cloaked figures, he pointed at them and asked, “Are these the Principle Advisor’s relatives?”
“No. There are… friends I made while living with humans. They are talented, to say the least,” the Wise Mad King replied, raising his chin a little.
Green Sword Saint and Morningstar Sage wore similar expressions of shock. A Demigod and three Holy-level fighters! Furthermore, these people had masked their auras so well, even fairy Demigods like themselves hardly realized it!
The King waved his arm, and the housemaids who were not a part of his inner circle quickly left the hall. Suddenly, a Sillence Barrier encased those who were left, and after that, the mysterious figures pulled down the hoods. Four shiny bald heads were unveiled, making them criminals who had just escaped a dungeon.
The Demigod mysterious figure smiled in a sinister manner before speaking in a dry voice, saying, “Nice to meet you.”
However, the moment opened his mouth, Green Sword Saint and Morningstar Sage became alert. The latter frowned at the mysterious Demigod and murmured, “A demon?!”
“Please, the name’s Xeron,” said the mysterious Demigod as he casually dragged a chair to himself. After he sat down, he eyed the beautiful cupcakes on the king’s table, then he took and bit into it. His face instantly lit up in pleasure. “My, my! I must have gotten used to humans’ treats. I actually consider this is quite scrumptious!”
“If that’s the case, then I can tell you, as a fact, that you’re far from just ‘gotten used to’. This is because no human would be able to enjoy this — the worst breakfast I’ve ever had in the Kingdom. I reckon a peasant’s breakfast would taste better than this!” Morningstar Sage snapped, then his gaze shifted to the Wise Mad King. “Your Majesty, why bring these vile demons before us?”
“I’ll suggest calling them ‘faithful comrades’ from now on, especially when they will be accompanying the two of you to fight a real demon,” the Wise Mad King replied as he pulled over a chair for himself.
After that, he picked up a pancake of his own and bit into it. Suddenly, he grimaced before heaving a long sigh. “It is just as you said; this is terrible.”
Although he seemed to be talking about the food, not many would understand the implication of his words. After all, the breakfast banquet was tailored specifically to his preferences, so how could he find its taste terrible?
“Phineas, you’re playing with fire,” Green Sword Saint said, in a voice filled with displeasure. He had been so displeased that he had dared to say the King’s real name.
However, he and the king had some blood relations, were childhood playmates, and were once brothers-in-arms. This was the reason why he had dared do such a thing.
“My beloved Brother, I know what am I dealing with. Moreover, may I remind you that, in moments like this, you shall only refer to me as High Reverend,” the Wise Mad King replied dismissively, tossing the unfinished pancake aside. “We’re in a desperate situation. I suggest the two of you let go of those stigmas and cooperate, in the name of our Great Work.”
“Heehehheheheh! I love it! I love the two of you! Oh, please, please, please; do come and visit me at my place next time.” Xeron laughed maniacally. Unlike the fairy Demigods, the atmosphere excited him.
“I’ll make this brief. Do you remember that plan I disclosed to the both of you? It failed, miserably. Our good, old mate, Hope, arrived and joined the party. I really do have to admit that it is a grueling task to defeat a real messenger of a god. This is why these friends have come in,” the Wise Mad King said. After that, he informed them of what had transpired the night before.
“Hehehe! So creepy! It was he who slew Thaas, right? Uh-oh; the name ‘Hope’ is making me shiver already!” Xeron chuckled in an unsettling manner. He even went as far as to wrap his arms around himself and shiver heavily.
The Wise Mad King frowned at this. It was obvious that the demon was mocking him for his incompetence. The Wise Mad King may have been the Second High Reverend, but this demon was the First High Reverend’s personal subject, who he has had to seek help from. Hence, at that moment, the King could only swallow his anger.
The two fairy Demigods, however, had complicated expressions on their faces. They were privy to the Mad King’s plans, yes, and they were even more familiar with his personality. The King never fought battles he was unsure of!
How did his plan fail? Is this Hope really that powerful?
“There is no need to kill him. We just need to protect the key strategic points of our formations until the plan succeeds. After that is done, his death will be assured,” the Wise Mad King finished.
“And, you think we cannot do this on our own?! Why must we work together with them? Phineas, I beseech you; think wisely. If this persists, our Kingdom would have nothing but destruction to face!” Green Sword Saint warned.
“I just told that you may only call me ‘High Reverend’!” The Wise Mad King bellowed, and his expression turned cold. “Do you need me to remind you how you attained your Demi-godhood, Finnon?”
Green Sword Saint seemed unwilling, but he ended up slowly shaking his head sideways.
Morningstar Sage, on the other hand, was still persistent. He picked up where Green Sword Said left off. “Your Majesty, with all due respect, we agreed to join the Godsfall cult on the condition that our actions do not bring harm to our Kingdom and our families. I hope you remember that line.”
“Yes, of course, I remember!” The Mad King snapped. “But, don’t you see what’s going on? The enemy of the Kingdom is tearing us apart! Isn’t this the time for the two of you to stand up for your beloved homeland?”
After saying that, the Wise Mad King stood up. “Look; a lot of ministers are waiting for me because I still tons of business to attend to. You all should befriend each other and play nice. The Principal Advisor will soon arrive to brief you on a well-detailed plan in place.”
After saying that, the Wise Mad King left the hall.
Fortunately, both groups did not resort to petulancy. They honored the Second High Reverend’s request and kept the peace.
A while later, Xeron suddenly sat up. He waved a finger, and a small map appeared in midair. There was a small mote of light shivering faintly on the map.
“Would you lookie here. Our old friend’s moving faster than we thought,” Xeron mumbled. He pondered for a while before turning to a bald demon, another one of the black-cloaked figures, who was standing beside him. “N’loth, you slick, life-clinging pansy! You will go and check this out, won’t you?”
“The most valorous of demons, N’loth, will come back with his head!” This bald demon exclaimed. Suddenly, its body dissolved into a dark fog before vanishing.
Xeron turned to face the fairy Demigods and smiled apologetically. “What can we do, huh? There’s always a bloody twit within our ranks who is quite painful to look at.”
The two fairy Demigods had serious expressions on their faces. ‘Did this demon just send one of his own comrades to face Hope, alone? Even if that demon is a Holy-level fighter, it could not possibly stand a chance against Hope! This was nothing more than a suicide mission!’
Who would want to be in a team with someone who could casually others off to their deaths? Xeron even looked expectant; his face was without any signs of remorse or worry. As for the other demons, none of them had spoken up their comrade. They even seemed to be smiling in schadenfreude.
They were just like the previous Abyss Lord, who now the Thirteenth Voidwalker, had described. Demons were a species that only looked out for their own benefits. They were selfish, prone to betraying others, short-sighted, and dimwitted.
In another location, Baiyi was standing in front of an altar of some kind, inspecting the glyphs etched onto the ground with his psychic energy, in a bid to discern their purpose.
As soon as day broke, Baiyi woke Nydore up. She was now standing beside the Fairy Walker with half-opened eyes. Then, she asked, “What’s Grandpa doing?”
“Thinking,” the Fairy Walker replied casually.
Suddenly, the Fairy Walker jerked before snatching the Caudillo Butterfly Bow from Nydore’s hands. The bow instantly transformed into a giant butterfly again, and then the Fairy Walker fired a single light arrow at an empty spot within the altar.
