I jerked awake, sitting up suddenly, my eyes blinking rapidly as I quickly looked around. I was sitting on a soft bed that even now was beckoning me back to sleep, in a spartan room made from wood and what looked like some sort of white lime plaster. The only other thing in the room was a chair facing away from me with what appeared to be an Asian woman. She had long black hair flowing down to her lower back. She was wearing a pristine white robe with gold trim and a blue crane embroiled over it. She was just sitting on the chair as she stared at me, my eyes instantly locked onto her.
"I have been chosen to be your mentor. My name is Zhang Mei, you may call me Mentor Zhang… I despise you and your galactic federation orthodox sect that borders on demonic cultivation practices. However, the patriarch and captain of this ship has declared that you are to be mentored in the righteous void walking sect ways so that you may understand what you have done and repent. Therefore, I will do my best to teach you, now get out of that bed, you will find a robe in the closet located inside the wall behind me, get dressed I will wait for you outside." with that she stood up and left.
I blinked, then I blinked again. After a few more moments, the only thing I could think was 'what?' It took me seven more minutes before I slowly rose from the bed and numbly walked over to the indicated wall. I ran my hand across it, looking for a way to open it. However, the moment my hand came in contact with a certain bit of the wall, a green outline of a hand appeared around my hand. The wall slid out in front of me, displaying a rack of pristine white robes, with blue trimming, and the same embroidered blue crane, on coat hangers. Somehow I knew how to put on the robe, and it wasn't until I was dressed and outside the room standing on a porch staring at a field of grass and trees that my brain finally processed. She had said cultivation and sect.
"First, what do you mean cultivation? And second, the Galactic Federation is an empire, not a sect." I said as I stared out at the grass and trees, listening to birds and all sorts of insects.
"Please, you can't fool me, you were a captain of a Galactic Federation ship! Yea, we know about that, one of the elders got all the information about your career off the nanites we flushed out of your system, congratulations by the way, you're mortal again. Life expectancy eighty years." she started laughing as she watched the colour drain from my face.
My eyes bounced around my peripheral trying to bring up my HUD only for nothing to happen. I could hear her laughing harder as she watched my eyes darting around until they locked onto her face.
"If what you say is actually true-"
"Oh, it's true, we got everything from the Galactic Federation out and off you. It was actually terrifying watching the nanites slowly eat your wings. However, we luckily found you in time to save you from losing them. The best bit is, after a few days of recovery your wings have already started healing and should be back to new in no time, we will give you a technique and allow you to start cultivating soon."
"What do you mean wings? What are you talking about?"
I saw her look at me, and a moment later a look of pity crossed her face. As she realised I wasn't putting on an act and really had no idea.
"You really don't know… do you?" she asked with a slight bit of shock and pity in her voice. I just shook my head as we continued to stare at each other.
"There are a few classes with the Void bit in them, like the Void pilot and the Void knight, for example. However, without getting enough Qi into your body to activate it, it's worthless. However, the Galactic Federation sect doesn't want void classes in their sect, they seem to think we are abominations or something." she shrugged her shoulders, trying to indicate she really had no idea why they mutilated void classes. "Anyway, long ago, they invented those nano machines and poured them over their worlds and told all the mortals to go forth and claim planets to acquire more benefits, not bothering to tell them each planet they claimed as being seeded with nano machines, just waiting to be activated, and that brings us to the first thing you have recently done that you need to repent for, by claiming the world below, you have doomed the people that we have been carefully monitoring and guiding to awakening that cursed system."
"So? What's the point of the mortals' land grabbing? What does it do that makes it so bad? And you still haven't told me what the void class thing even is."

"The point" she snapped at me before continuing calmly. "Is, with those mortal clans gaining more territory and expanding the Galactic Federation Sects domain, is the Karma points it generates once you… what was your rank?" she suddenly asked as she shoved her hand into her robe and pulled out a glass tablet and began swiping at its surface.
"Uh, I was a Solar Baron" I said slowly, feeling confused by all this.
I saw her pause as she looked over at me before glancing back down at the tablet running her finger across it slowly for a few more moments, she finally put the tablet away and looked at me again.
"Right, yes, a Solar whatever. Basically a civilian in a village that no one cares about, that would make the planetary whatever the street urchins and the sector whatever would be the young masters of your village. They want to smack you for getting in their way. So, once you had worked your mortal ass off, helped by those nano machines, to stay alive long enough to claim enough territory to reach the Galactic whatever. Who by the way are the mortals that the cultivator comes to recruit from that dingy village of yours? Their entire clan then gets to go and learn to cultivate with sparkles and wishful dreams. All they have to do is offer up territory to the Celestial clan, or galactic clan that is trying to break through to celestial, that takes them in. And why do they need to offer up territory, you might ask, well It's because each planet generates karma that the celestial clans use to advance their cultivation. After all, the only way for a god to get stronger is to draw karma into their dantians."
She suddenly turned and walked away from the rooms' door we had been standing in front of. After a few moments, I quickly ran to catch up with her.
"Alright, so you don't do that, I'm guessing, but that still doesn't explain what the void bit in my class is about."
"No! Of course, we don't do that, we are a righteous sect not an orthodox sect like the Galactic Federation Sect who, honestly might be considered by a fair few sects, to be demonic. Now to explain the void, to you, is not as easy as you might think. The common mortal on any planet might have the concept of the void. However, they most likely assume it is something like space or even another word for the space between their planet and the next, or even just their star system and the next. However, they would be wrong-" she suddenly stopped talking as she frowned, she turned and looked at me before slowly asking a new question.
"You said your class was void pilot, right?"
"Yea…"
"Interesting, anyway, the void is actually the space between this dimension, or realm if you prefer, and the next. However, crossing the void is not easy, there are all sorts of creatures that live in the void, and would love nothing more than to devour the Qi from… well anything and everything, even galaxies. But I will get back to them in a minute, because it suddenly occurred to me that you might still be thinking the void pilot is part of the Galactic Federations nano system thing, well you're wrong, the void pilot is actually a gene in your body, that is forcefully activated by selecting that class. If you don't then it will just remain dormant and be passed down to your children unless you can unlock it naturally through cultivation. Actually, the void pilot is misleading, you're not a pilot, you're more a Void Bird." she grinned as she looked at me and waved her arms like they were wings, before continuing with a slightly embarrassed look on her face. "Yea, okay, I'll get back to those void creatures now, basically they are giant animals or insects, they get so big because they devour the Qi and Karma of anything they can eat and use it to strengthen their own bodies."
"Alright, but what do they have to do with me being a Void Bird?"
"Ah, well the Void Bird, comes in many forms, from the small bird, like a hummingbird, to large birds, like the phoenix. Everyone that has the Void Bird gene awakens one of these birds as their void creature. Which allows them to cross the void without being noticed by the creatures that live in the void. Keep in mind it doesn't always work, they will notice you if you fly right past them. However, they are less likely to notice a Qi signature that appears to be like one of their own a couple of hundred light years away. For some strange reason, they seem to avoid any void creature that has wings. Now, you are probably wondering why there are Void Knights. Well, the answer is simply they can't fly, they tend to be predator creatures. By the way, I know a void knight that has the gene for a void centipede. She looks terrifying. Anyway, the Void Knights require the assistance of a Void Bird in order to cross the void relatively safely. She stopped talking as she pushed open a door and stepped into a large room that honestly, to me, looked exactly like I would expect a cultivation sects library to look like. It even had the several floors of books or whatever those scrolls sitting on the shelves were.
"Damn" I whispered in amazement.
"Yea, I know, right. Anyway, we are headed to the top floor to get you a cultivation technique for your Void Bird gene." she stated as she pushed me to walk towards a staircase.
I wasn't sure how I was feeling about all this, and I kept on thinking about all the void classes that were in my guild and clan back home. I knew I had to tell them about this and get them help, as well as my entire clan out, maybe I could ask these cultivators if there was a way to relocated my entire solar system. I definitely needed to find out how to get all those nano machines the hell out of there. A frown slowly appeared on my face as I stepped onto the third floor and walked towards the next staircase.
"Hey, uh Mentor Zhang, what bird am I?" I suddenly asked, curious to know.
She turned to look at me and I saw the look of disgust flash across her face like the one she had when I first woke up before she quickly hid it and smiled politely to me.
"I honestly, thought you already knew, it's on your arm after all."
"What? I'm a star hawk? Is that even its name?" I almost yelled in shock.
She glanced at me before ascending the stairs, she did not respond until she reached the 6th floor.
"Yes, it is called a star hawk, the subconscious is an amazing thing, and always seems to know more than we know ourselves, for instance, the star hawk looks exactly like the image on your shoulder, except for those bright stars on its chest and stomach. However, the star hawk is known to have a pattern in those spots that represent the closest place to its birth, making it unique to the individual." she finished as she stepped onto the 7th floor.
