Selene's sense of foreboding grew stronger. When one future after another revealed such tragic endings, did it mean no matter what she did, she couldn't escape the catastrophe?
But that didn't make sense. No matter how dire the future might be, there should always remain a sliver of hope.
So where exactly was her sliver of hope?
Under immense pressure, Selene continued scanning futures at the fastest speed possible, desperately searching for the one future truly meant for her.
But just then, her vision blurred, and suddenly she found herself standing in an unfamiliar place.
Before she stretched an endless battlefield, rolling yellow sands filled the air, the scent of blood and ironing throughout heaven and earth.
"Kill!"
Countless soldiers surged from all directions, shouting as they charged towards her. Their densely packed figures stretched beyond any visible horizon.
Where... was this?
An illusion?
Selene felt increasingly uneasy. She knew Carlotta had launched her attack against her, but how exactly had it been triggered? Why hadn't she noticed the opponent making a move?
Instinctively, Selene continued seeking her own future, only to discover it had turned completely white, blinding her. For a moment, she could see absolutely nothing.
This sight instantly drains the color from her face, unbearable to accept.
She could no longer see the future.
Before being pulled into this scene, even though every future she'd seen ended tragically, at least she still had chances to keep searching for more futures. That meant a safe future must exist, she simply hadn't found it yet.
But now, she can see no future at all. As someone who practiced Seer Magic, she clearly understood what it meant when the future became invisible: it meant she had no future left!
In reality, all this had happened in just an instant.
Around Carlotta, many armored versions of herself emerged, rapidly closing in on Selene. Then, with a single sword slash, Selene's head was severed on the spot.
This scene closely resembles the many futures Selene had previously foreseen through her Seer Magic.
"Why... why is this happening..."
Selene returned from the War Goddess's space, but her head had already separated from her body. Only her consciousness continued churning.
This churning consciousness, carried along by residual magical reflections from her opponent, was captured by Carlotta.
Carlotta glanced at Selene. "Why? Isn't it because you meddled in affairs that weren't yours? My grudge with the Carlisle family, why did you insist on getting involved? Since you did, just accept the consequences of death properly."
Her tone was calm and indifferent. She swung her sword again. With swirling blades, she tore apart Selene's remaining corpse.
After collecting her spoils, Carlotta called out, "We should go."
Guy, White Goat, and Azure Fox immediately withdrew.
As for Nightcat, who had already been blasted far away, she was severely injured but still able to endure. She quickly followed the others in retreat.
"Pursue them! Don't let them escape!"
Behind them, Golden Lion, Elisa, and others were shocked and enraged, unable to accept the current situation.
Selene had been killed. How could they now rely on her abilities to find the correct path within the Tower of Babel? How could they continue chasing this group?
They absolutely couldn't let this group escape!
Thus, another life-or-death pursuit battle erupted once more. Both sides clashed across the 180th floor of the Tower of Babel, shattering the earth and reducing all things to desolation.
Ultimately, Guy risked exposing his identity by copying White Goat's Mirror Magic, creating an even more sophisticated mirror world. This managed to restrain everyone, creating an opportunity to escape. He led the group into the next floor.
Then, they rapidly passed through several floors and arrived at the 189th floor.
This was an archipelago world, sunlight spreading everywhere, flowers and plants flourishing across the islands, scenery exceptionally pleasant.
Sitting on the beach, the five of them finally breathed a long sigh of relief.
"Some things weren't clear before, but now I need to understand."
White Goat took a deep breath, turned toward Nightcat, and questioned, "What's your relationship with Golden Lion?"
The others also turned their eyes toward Nightcat.
Nightcat rubbed her temples and said, "Just an acquaintance. That's why he couldn't bring himself to attack me directly. But does it really matter? How was I supposed to know my acquaintance would be on the opposing side?"
She didn't hide too much, choosing to reveal part of the truth, making her explanation seem natural and without issue.
In the end, she even emphasized that under the constraints of the Absolute Contract, she was their most reliable teammate, and there was no need to worry about her.
Hearing her words, the others exchanged glances, having nothing further to say.
Then, White Goat turned to Carlotta. "Are you really from the Northern Continent?"
Carlotta still wore her true appearance, red hair fluttering, sweet features making her look more like a dazzling noble lady at a ball than a supernatural combatant fighting in the Tower of Babel.
She replied calmly, "I know you've never heard of me, so you're surprised by my existence. But there are always people in this world who prefer to stay low-key, aren't there?"
She mentioned she had simply been too low-key, which was why none of them had ever heard of her.
To this explanation, the others remain noncommittal.
The main reason was that Carlotta had successively eliminated Achilles and Selene. No matter how you looked at it, she was extremely reliable.
"She's not wrong. I just haven't heard of her. Selene clearly knew her. And that Achilles, surely he knew her too."
White Goat thought to himself.
Finally, he looked toward Guy.
The others also turned their gazes toward Guy.
Azure Fox Wesley exclaimed, "Never thought that the one we assumed was using his real identity would actually be using a fake one too. According to the contract, we shouldn't probe your true identity, but we're truly curious, just who are you? Of course, if you don't want to say, there's nothing we can do."
Guy smiled slightly. "Just keep calling me Guy."
He had used Copy Magic to directly replicate White Goat's path. He clearly wasn't the real Guy. Even the Knight of Night skill belonging to Guy was undoubtedly copied.
But his specific identity truly couldn't be revealed, because to outsiders, his real identity was associated with different abilities, not Copy Magic. That was his trump card.
Seeing this, the others could do nothing.
At that moment, Carlotta asked, "Since you can copy others' abilities, can you copy Selene's abilities?"
Guy shook his head. "No. I need sufficient time spent with the person, and they must have repeatedly demonstrated the corresponding ability, before I can copy it."
Clearly, Guy and Selene hadn't spent enough time together.
However, after hearing Guy's words, the people around him couldn't help feeling a bit awkward, because they had certainly spent plenty of time with him and had repeatedly used their abilities. Could Guy replicate their path too?
Seeing the strange looks directed at him, Guy quickly said, "Don't look at me like that. I can't easily copy your abilities. For instance, Miss Rose's ability, I still can't replicate it."
The group exchanged glances, unsure whether to believe him.
White Goat, on the other hand, was clearly frustrated. He couldn't speak for others, but he was absolutely certain his own ability had been copied, no doubt about it.
"Anyway, we've finally shaken off Golden Lion's group. From now on, let's stick to the original plan, find the other teams and continue targeting Golden Lion's group."
White Goat addresses the group.
The others nodded in agreement, showing no objections.
Except Carlotta.
She had already eliminated Achilles and Selene. She wasn't eager to keep clashing with Golden Lion's team and was considering leaving the group to go solo.
With the intelligence she'd gathered, she could easily advance higher in the Tower of Babel. No one could catch up to her, and she didn't need to worry about being pursued by Golden Lion's group.
Thinking of her intel, Carlotta silently summoned her information panel and peeked at it, only to realize new data had already been refreshed.
Has another day's dawn arrived already?
Carlotta hadn't slept for many days. Inside the Tower of Babel, it was impossible to tell time, and with constant battles, she hadn't had a chance to pull out her Clock Card to check. She truly couldn't tell how much time had passed.
Only now did she take out the Clock Card and look. To her surprise, the time shown was 7:00 am
Time truly became difficult to gauge during battle.
At this moment, seeing Carlotta pull out the Clock Card, the others couldn't help but wear subtle expressions.
"What exactly are your abilities? Are they card magic? Or some other unknown technique?"
Guy couldn't help but ask.
"A teammate's past is not to be evaluated."
With this one sentence, Guy was silenced.
Carlotta then looked at her intel.
[ 1: The alchemical airship was stored in Selene's spatial item. This was the decision reached after group discussion. No one would have felt safe placing it with Golden Lion Rodrigo or Doll Elisa Griffin.]
Carlotta took a deep breath.
After eliminating Selene, she hadn't checked the spoilers yet. She hadn't expected the alchemical airship to be with Selene.
Now wasn't the time to take it out and inspect it. She'd need to wait for a more appropriate moment.
[ 2: The world and civilization from which the alchemical airship originated did indeed exist in the past. Their descendants entered the Tower of Babel to escape the divine wars, but eventually, due to the Tower's unsuitable living environment, they gradually perished and faded from history.]
Like a bolt of lightning, Carlotta's heart trembled with shock.
No matter how many assumptions she'd made before about that other civilization, they were all just conjectures based on various clues, never something she could confirm with absolute certainty.
But now, even her intelligence mentioned it, confirming the actual existence of another world.
What did this mean?
Carlotta recalled the murals she'd seen earlier.
If that civilization truly exists, then the depictions on those murals were likely true as well.
In other words, gods really exist.
'If gods truly exist, and aren't confined to a single world, seem able to travel between worlds, then why in my world have gods become mere legends? Many even believe gods never existed at all, that everything was fabricated.'
If gods exist, why are there no divine manifestations?
Carlotta's confusion didn't lessen with the arrival of this intel. Instead, it only grew.
[ 3: The Tower of Babel is a nexus of realms. Besides crossing the stars to reach other worlds, the Tower is another method, indeed, the simple one. Inside the Tower, there still exists mysterious passages that connect to other worlds.]
Carlotta's confusion deepened.
Could the Tower of Babel connect to various worlds? Then why had no one ever found another world?
Or rather, why hadn't people from other worlds ever appeared?
Could it be that the Tower's activation times differ across worlds, causing everyone to miss each other?
Carlotta felt the matter was probably not that simple.
[ 4: Tower floor 201 connects to a world. The exact location is visible on deities 201 (a map).]
Carlotta took a deep breath.
A pitch-black map appeared before her eyes. Because she hadn't yet reached floor 201, the map hadn't been activated.
Carlotta now had a clear goal. She desperately wanted to see what another world looked like. She didn't know what existed there or whether it was dangerous, but the urge to see it was overwhelming, an instinctive human curiosity.
There were only four pieces of intel today, but the information volume was substantial. Carlotta already knew what to do.
"Are you all rested enough? If not, keep resting. I'm going to take a walk around."
Without waiting for the others' response, Carlotta turned and walked away.
She no longer wanted to stay with these people. She had her own path to follow and it wasn't suitable to drag them along.
The others glanced at Carlotta as she left, not thinking much of it. Bound by the Absolute Contract, they naturally didn't suspect anything, assuming she really was just taking a short walk and would return soon.
They didn't know, however, that the Absolute Contract only bound Weavers. Carlotta was a Resonator, and not even a high-tier one!
Carlotta moved farther away, quickly leaving the others behind in the distance, then found a passage leading down to the next floor.
This passage was hidden deep within a mountain on one of the islands, very concealed. Normally, it would be extremely difficult to locate. Luckily, Carlotta was cheating. She knew the exact position and found it easy.
Carlotta entered the passage and arrived at floor 190.
Then she continued upward, proceeding cautiously. Each floor still harbored numerous Weaver monsters. Many of these creatures would give her trouble even if she fought them directly. If she could avoid combat, she would.
Step by step, she climbed higher, drawing closer to her goal.
