150 - Daggat/Thrymja: Orcish Diplomacy


Everything was ready. The manor was presentable. Food was ready. Daggat was as charming as he could be at the moment. Next level, he would push that charm past thirty. Everyone was informed of their roles and the goal of the… dinner.

Of course, the throne was missing. But that would arrive soon.

The only issue was how to invite the orcs. They would have to do it in a sufficiently grand or spectacular way. First impressions were everything.

This is what they settled on. Zuss and Elyndris went to scout them again and identified the leader. Then, when they returned, Elyndris would offer a telepathic invitation.

Something along the lines of "You are formally invited to a feast at Titanfell Manor. Bring no more than six with you. Let us build a better future together."

Daggat was confident Elyndris would find a way to make that suitably dramatic.

Hunter would greet them with Zuss as backup. Alfred was on door duty. Daggat and the others would be waiting in the great hall.

Now Daggat just had to wait.

"Orc! You have been invited to feast. Come to Titanfall with no more than six companions, and your future will be bright."

The mental communication came to Thrymja as a shock. Interesting… the potential enemy was revealing itself to use psychic power. Rare, but not unheard of.

He ended his meditation and strode through the tent where he and the other leaders met. Koarok, the Strength, was speaking with Tika, the Memory. There was much debate on whether the tribe should move on or wait for the supposed lord of the manor.

This was, ultimately, a decision for the future of the tribe. That meant Thrymja had final say. His decision was to wait a few days and see what there was to see.

That was how their tribe did things. The ancient way, a tradition stretching back to the Orcish Isles. One to decide the future, one to lead the present, and one to remember the past. Thrymja was the Wisdom. He who decides the future of the tribe.

"The lord of the manor has arrived," grumbled Thrymja, "They have sent me a message by telepathy."

"Telepathy? What manner of creature is it?" Koarok asked. "The oni?"

Thrymja shook his head. "I do not know. Could be that that was the only one we've seen. But I doubt the lord of the manor would be picking herbs."

"How did their arrival go unseen? We have scouts patrolling around the manor for miles." Tika said.

"Again, I do not know. Whoever it is is subtle. They have invited us to a feast. Only seven will be allowed entry."

"Seven? A trap then?" Koarok said.

"Perhaps, but the message implied a discussion of the future," Thrymja said. "Whether we go or not is your decision to make, Strength."

He thought for some time, then finally came to a decision, "We will go. If this is a trap, then we can overcome it. If the enemy proves to be weak, we will crush them. And if they are worthy, perhaps we may come to some beneficial agreement."

"Then who should go?" Tika asked.

"You stay," Koaorok said, "If it is a trap, we must retain our Memory. Thrym and I will go; we are the strongest. Skay knows the labyrinth; should we fall prey to it? Then Aksas, Branz, Ulft, and Teffa."

"Weapons?" Thrymja asked.

Roarok smiled, "We bring them. If they don't like it, then tough. We aren't going into an enemy fortress unarmed."

Thrymja nodded, then set out to prepare.

He made sure to gather his totems. Small objects infused with the power of the storm. They helped him see and bolstered his magic, even when his core was depleted. He carried a heavy staff. The surviving core of a tree struck by lightning and carved with imagery of his patron.

Soon, the group was ready. Skay carried his daggers, Aksas his twin axes. Branz carried no weapons but wore heavy armor. Ulft strung her bow. Teffa carried no weapons. She was among the oldest of the orcs, and one of the deadliest. She herself was not dangerous, but she was born with a gift from Mihr. To steal away the spirits of her slain and use them as weapons. What beast's spirit she had in her clutches now, he couldn't know.

The manor was two miles away. They did not wish to camp too close. Still, this was no distance for the orcs who had wandered the forest for three generations.

Thrymja was blind beyond his static aura, so he was unable to see the manor loom ahead of them. Still, when they approached the first gate, Thrymja could see it open by itself. Telekenesis. The lord of the manor was a psychic user, and he had a way to sense their coming.

Thrymja and Koarok shared a look, then went within.

A large creature waited for them. An oni, he believed. A second-tier ogre. It held a large torch.

This was a show of force. Intimidation. Showing that they have tamed a feral ogre. Creatures known to be unreasonable and violent, even after they have calmed themselves.

"This way, Daggat is waiting for you." He said.

Thrymja chuckled, a feral ogre as a servant, no less.

"Are you the lord of this place?" Koarok asked. Foolish Strength.

"No." The oni said simply.

He led them to the entrance. An old, ruined set of doors. Repaired only enough to be opened. This told Thrymja that no mortal lived here. Mortals valued such things. Something that had claimed this place, then.

Beyond the entrance was a small foyer. The tree that grew from the manor came from below. It broke through the floor and the ceiling. Interesting.

Finally, two more great doors opened. Again, by themselves.

The great hall was poorly furnished and was devoid of any decoration, save for one painting on a wall, which Thrymja could not see.

At the end of the long table lounged a creature that could only be the lord. Just from the way he sat, Thrymja could read that he was aloof and self-important. What kind of monster this was, he had no clue. Though once it had been a goblin. Its jewelry sparkled in Thrymja's storm sense.

At its side was a bugbear wearing a golden crown and a mismatch of oddly fitting armor. More gaudy displays. Showing wealth to impress them. It would have the opposite effect. Another creature, Thrymja, wasn't familiar with sitting stiffly on the other side of the table. A young female spider humanoid monster. Next to her sat a female lycan.

Then there was the unliving thing sitting almost daintily next to the bugbear. It was made of wood and had no lightning coursing through its system, like most living things did. If it wasn't for the calming sense that came from the great fire behind the leader, he would have shuddered.

That calming aura did feel nice, but it kept him from being on edge. Dangerous. An aura of peace? That would keep the others from making rash decisions, at least.

Another monster Thrymja didn't recognize silently fell to a chair and deftly maneuvered into it. Some sort of goblinoid bird, but not a harpy. Her lightning raced impossibly fast.

Spread on the table was food. A large, slightly burnt loaf of uneven bread. A roast of some unknown meat. Bowls of gravy and a large salad. Scattered amongst the food were small, black bars.

"Welcome to Titanfell Manor, guests. Please. Take a seat. Enjoy the food." His voice was smooth and sweet. It had a quality to it that drew his attention. A trustworthy voice.

Thrymja had considerable will for an orc. He was also level twenty-two. Yet, this force took effort to resist.

This was going to be an interesting dinner.

Daggat had to consciously keep his tail from whipping back and forth as the orcs marched into the room. The two leaders had roughly the same power level, levels in their twenties. The rest were level fifteen.

"Are you the lord of this manor?" Asked the shorter leader. He had a powerful build, but the other one dwarfed him. The orc looked angry, but that might just be the tusks.

"I am. The name is Daggat."

"Why have you invited us to your fortress?"

"Because we're civil. You came to my home. It is only proper I say hello, isn't it?"

"How did a goblin take a place like this?"

Daggat sneered, "Not a goblin anymore. Well, mostly. Gancanagh. And we took this place by being strong."

"Strong? More like trickery! I have worked with goblins before. Never again." He growled.

The largest turned on him, "That is not your place to say." Then he turned towards Daggat, "Forgive him. I am Thrymja, Wisdom of the Evergreen Maw. This is Koarok, our Strength." He continued to introduce the rest.

"And who is this?" Daggat asked, eying the other figure in the room. A spirit, or ghost. It was chained to the eldest orc's aura. The ghost was of a man in bone-plated armor. He wielded a large sword over his shoulder. "I only offered seven. You brought eight."

Thrymja looked puzzled, "We… only brought seven. We have no tricks."

Daggat ignored him, "Who are you?" Gesturing towards the spirit.

It slowly turned its head towards Daggat. Its face was a spiral of ghostly flesh, spinning into itself. "Please… help me… unbind me…" Its voice was strained and far off.

The elder orc tugged at the chain, "Quiet! This… gancanagh, can see my bound spirit." She croaked.

Thrymja opened his arms in apology, "We did not realize you would count the dead, or could."

Alfred slowly rose from his seat. His head snapped towards the orc with an audible crack, "Are the dead not allowed to negotiate at the table? We have the wisdom of life and the clarity of death."

"It's fine. Easy mistake." Daggat said, "All are welcome at this table. Living, dead. Monster, mortal. Take a seat! The food is getting cold."

Daggat and his assistants pulled out chairs. Alfred pulled out the others a half second later. The orcs took a step back.

He could hardly suppress the grin. First impressions were important indeed.

"Like I said," Koarok said, "We've worked with goblins. Rot and poison. That's all you eat."

Klaw growled, and Anath's spider legs quivered. Hunter came from the kitchen holding a pitcher of warmed ale with spices. Daggat's assistant took it and filled cups.

"Please don't insult our cook. You wouldn't like the consequences." Daggat suddenly smiled widely, "We'll eat first. It's a giant roast, salad, and, if you're still hungry… orc pemmican."

Daggat served himself a cut of giant and bread. It was a surprisingly tender and sweet meat. It was a good idea to take some meat after taking the giant's ears. He had also grabbed a smaller bag of goblin ears from the giant's fight; he would turn these in later.

To Daggat's surprise, the orcs laughed. Then they took seats and began to dig into the food.

"So, what brings you to my doorstep?" Daggat asked, "Besides fleeing battle?"

Koarok tore a chunk of giant meat with his tusks, "We did not flee! We simply left. How is it that you know?"

"Oh, no big secret. I was the one you were… leaving from."

Thrymja glared at Daggat with his strange eyes. They seemed to be formed of lightning. "You jest. What you say is impossible."

Daggat's grin faded away, "Hogo Brittleblade was slain by me. His army broken by mine. The village was protected by the trees, trapped with enchanted web. Fire soared into the sky! Burning goblins and orcs alive. You faced goblins on wolves and had to contend with magical traps. We were there."

"The goblins had leaders, slain by us," Klaw added, "A stone troll and a thing with exploding teeth."

"A blade master, too," Anath added.

Koarok stood from the chair suddenly. The weaker orcs were busy stuffing their faces with gravy. "So this IS a trap! You were at the battle." He drew a sword from his hip, "We won't die so easily."

Daggat rolled his eyes, "Relax, we aren't out for blood. Truth is, if you fought, we would have had a harder time." He eyed Thrymja, "You seem level-headed, pull back your Strength."

"I do not take orders," Thrymja grumbled, "But he is right. We would be fighting now if this were for blood. Why, then?"

"I've told you. This is my home, simple as that. I do want to know why you abandoned the goblins."

"Because they lied to us. We were promised wealth and experience. Instead, we were relegated to the back lines. Only preventing mortals from fleeing. You don't get mercenaries if you don't pay." Koarok said.

"Surely you looted?" Daggat asked.

The orc narrowed his eyes, "That wasn't a part of the deal."

"That makes sense. If it makes you feel better, it was the smart move." Daggat said.

"We are now enemies of Rika. Smart or not, we are in danger."

"A few days ago, we came across a giant."

"Triboar?" Asked Thrymja.

"That's the one. Three-headed, pig theme. He's who we are eating." Daggat said.

Thrymja nodded and took another bite, "Thought so."

"Anyways, he was lured into a trap by the goblins. They ambushed him, trying to kill him for experience. If I were a betting gancanagh, which I most surely am, I would put money on Rika giving the order to kill all mercs."

Koarok cursed and slammed his sword into the table. "Cowards!"

Alfred ripped the blade back out with a spell, "Mind the table. It's an antique." One of the other orcs noticed this and removed his knife from the table.

"Yes," Daggat said, "Rika is a coward. She hides away in her camp, letting goblins feed her experience. That is part of the reason why I am going to kill her."

Koarok laughed. "You kill Rika? Did you witness her fight against the unicorn?"

"We can take her," Klaw said.

"Fighting strong things is what we do," Hunter said.

Koarok shook his head, "I mean no offense to any of you. But she is beyond us. I witnessed her conquer a storm. The goblins you fought were weak. She is STRONG."

"We are strong," Daggat said softly. "But if you add your strength to ours, Rika would fall like a sapling."

"Yeah? You think you can fight alongside orcs?" He asked.

"Yes."

"Prove it."

"Sure. Tell me, Koarok," Daggat said. "How do orcs prove their strength against one another? Shall we wage war and see who's left standing?"

"We duel," Thrymja said, "In times of disagreement, before war is waged, the leaders offer a champion. Each fight until all six leaders declare a winner."

"Six? Wouldn't it be four?"

"A third leads, the Memory. She is not with us." Thrymja said.

"Well, then, let's duel. Let me show you what we can do. Pick a champion."

"You hear that, boys? He wants a duel." Koarok said. The orcs cheered. So did Ivory, who had been watching the exchange in fascination. "Aksas, you take this one."

"Gladly!" roared the orc, who stood and brandished two axes.

"Who would be your champion?" Asked Thrymja.

Daggat shrugged and lounged in the chair, "I don't care. Pick one."

"What?" Koarok asked sharply.

"Any of us can take him. Pick one."

"Are you sure?" Koarok asked, confused, "I can pick your weakest."

"Then show me your strength and your honor. Who fights?"

Koarok scanned the party. He glanced at Aksas. Then his face hardened with resolve. "I will pick who I believe is your strongest, then." Klaw began to scoot his chair back, but the orc continued, "The oni!"

All of Goblin Teeth looked wide-eyed at Hunter, whose face was stricken by surprise and fear.

"Me?" He asked.

"Him?" Daggat asked, "Look, he's our cook. Our healer."

Thrymja chuckled, "You would go against your word?"

Daggat sighed, "No… welp. You've got this, buddy! Get 'em!"

Hunter's lip trembled, "ME?!"
