Tracking Zuss was simple. He had the party tracker perk, which pointed directly to her. It also told him exactly how far away she was. Several miles, further than he would want to walk.
Luckily, they had a handy transportation system. Hrodebert brought them as close as they could get, then they searched the forest for her.
What they found, curled up at the base of a tree, was a little terror. Its mask was darker than the night, only showing the eyes, which had a faint, yellow shine to them.
"Zuss?" Daggat asked.
She shifted, then walked over. "Hi."
Klaw crossed his arms. "What's going on?"
"I heard a spirit beast… so I went after it."
Daggat raised his arm in confusion. "Alone! Without telling us? Nice mask, by the way. Creepy."
Her dark eyes bored into him, "Yeah. I killed it. It's a personal challenge, and I wasn't going to have you muddle. Not like you told us you were fighting one."
Well, that was a fair argument. Still, Daggat had a dark feeling that something more was going on. Whatever it was, she was safe, and they had one spirit beast checked off. It may be something for her to work through on her own. But, he would keep an ear out.
"So, what did you get?" Daggat asked.
Zuss's ears dipped, and she sighed. Her mask faded away, revealing a bright, crescent shape on her forehead. It began to glow brightly, casting dark shadows.
"The worst trait I could get." She mumbled.
"That's great!" Daggat exclaimed, "Perfect for you."
Zuss resummoned the mask, "Don't try to make me feel better."
"What? No, it's great. You can make your own shadows whenever you want. When you fight, you're light will get in the enemy's eyes. And your shadow mask thing hides it well."
Klaw nodded, "Ever try to fight with the sun in your eyes? It's not quite that bad, but it will make it harder to hit you."
"I'll be a target."
Daggat half shrugged, "Eh, so then we work on some ranged defense for you. No biggy."
Zuss shifted her stance. It became more Zuss-like, less reserved. "Let's go kill a demon hunter. I want to get a level and evolve."
Daggat gave her an embarrassed smile, "Ah, well, you see. I was hoping you would… hold off on that."
Both Klaw and Zuss spat, "Why?"
He held up his hand in supplication, "Look, look, I have a thing I want to try, is all. Alchemy stuff. And if it does something interesting, then you guys can do it, too. That's all."
Klaw jabbed at his chest, "You just want to evolve first."
Daggat growled, "No, you idiot! I am just willing to put myself at risk before you! If something goes wrong with my evolution, then I can live with it. I won't risk you two. Or the others."
Zuss put a hand to her head, "Fine, whatever. Let's just track this guy down. I want to get back to the others."
Klaw grunted, "Whatever. We know what path the target is taking, but not its exact location. How we gonna find them?"
Daggat started to head towards the nearest titan, "The hunter has some way to find Hrodebert. I figure, if we drop in around where he might be, and have our treeboy do some demon stuff, then jump the hunter. Easy."
Klaw gave Daggat a flat look, "Your confidence in stupid plans is always impressive."
"Thank you. Now, let's get to killin'"
The trio made their way to the titan, and Daggat placed a hand on the trunk. A moment later, it opened, and a large, wooden hand gestured them through.
After a brief description of their destination, another hole was opened. They had traveled over twenty miles in less than two minutes. With this power, Daggat's ambition would be fully realized.
"We need you, buddy. Don't worry, we won't let him hurt you."
Hrodebert nodded and followed the group. They found themselves standing on a road. Here, it was drizzling light rain. Dark clouds hid the moon, making it too dark for Klaw and Daggat to see well. Their night vision only went so far. But if they had low visibility, then the human would have an even harder time.
The road was well used and well kept. Flat and free of stones or roots.
"Here's what I need you to do, Hrodebert. Use some of your demon magic to do… something. Something big."
"I'm not a demon." He said, He was covering his head with a hand to protect it from the rain.
"Well, not yet. I think. But… the magic stuff. The power that isn't from a class. The stuff the tree's taught you to do."
"Oohhhh. Okay, if you're sure."
Hrodbert squared his hips and shoulders, then reached out with two hands. Daggat, despite the dark, could still see the forest aura around him. It wavered, then seemed to sprout branches, reaching towards the center of the road.
The earth began to shake, then the road split. A small tree sprouted, then began to grow. It finally stopped once it had completely overtaken the road.
Daggat patted the tree, "Nice work. Now, we wait."
They did not have to wait long. Zuss was the first to spot him. A lone traveler on the road, walking at a steady pace.
The human wore a simple white coat with a hood attached. On one shoulder, he had a large, curved stick. A small bag hung from the end of the stick. His overhand held a floating orb of light, which illuminated him and the road.
"That him?" Daggat whispered.
"I don't know… It's dark. I think so." Hrodebert lacked the dark vision native to goblinoids.
The human had a larger aura than any other mortal he had seen. Level twenty or so. But he was outnumbered, and they were about to ambush the man.
Then Klaw started to walk forward to meet him.
"What are you doing?" Daggat hissed.
"Paladin. Can't sneak attack." He said simply.
Klaw stepped onto the road and into the view of the human. Daggat moved to his side. Zuss hid in the tree line.
The human noticed them, then came to a stop. He bowed deeply, "Greetings, Sir Paladin. It is a lucky night for us to cross paths like this."
Klaw cracked his knuckles, "You can see my class?"
"Of course. Ah, allow me to introduce myself. I am called Harriot the Ascetic."
"Demon Hunter?"
Harriot's hood hid his face, "I am. And I do. May I ask your name and your church?"
"Klaw."
"I see."
Daggat couldn't stay quiet for long, "See many bugbear paladins?"
Harrior laughed. It was a youthful, friendly sound, "I don't, no. But this is a strange forest. Where monsters outnumber men. It is only reasonable that one would take the righteous path."
Daggat chuckled, "Yeah, okay. What brings you out this late? Humans are day walkers, right?"
"I sensed vile magic. A demonling lurks near, beware."
"How'd you do that, then? Sense it."
"It is the gift from the inquisitor class. I am notified when demon magic is performed."
This intrigued Daggat; it was an opportunity to confirm some of his theories. "Alchemy too?"
"To an extent. But, yes. Though I have no ill will towards alchemists."
"But you do towards demons. Why?"
"This is no place to talk, but I am glad to later. I am afraid I cannot risk camp now. What brings the two of you here?" He asked the question with a friendly tone. Interested, not accusatory. It was a good thing they left Hunter behind.
Daggat weighed his options. He could get some more answers if he just waited… but it was late and his wound was acting up in the rain. Daggat summoned his spear. "Nah, thanks though. You want this fast or painful?"
Harriot stood still, "You do not want this trouble. Believe me."
Daggat twirled the spear with telekenesis, "Oh, I don't for sure. But you pissed off the trees. Shouldn't have done that. Worse, you almost killed my buddy. He's very handy, that buddy. So… gotta kill you. Sorry."
Hrodbert rounded from the tree he was hiding in, "Wait… Daggat, don't hurt him."
The demon hunter acted in a flash. It cast aside the bundle on his stick and the stick itself. He leaped high in the air, almost soaring. The light vanished just in time for Daggat to see that the stick was only a sheath for a ten-foot-long, curved blade.
Klaw moved to protect the idiot demonling, and Daggat sent his spear towards the foe.
He was in the air, which meant he couldn't dodge the attack. That was until a pair of golden wings flashed onto his back. They were made of light and illuminated the battlefield.
They flapped once and sent the hunter to the side, dodging the spear. He landed on his feet effortlessly.
"I do not know why you are allied with that creature, but it is a mistake." The human didn't sound angry. More… sorrowful?
"YOU started this, don't forget." Daggat retrieved his spear. "Tell us why, and maybe I can work something out with his boss."
Klaw, seemingly no longer held back from his oaths, rushed forward. He slashed with a bladed arm, which was parried by the Demon Hunter. The sword moved blindingly fast, knocking Klaw's arm back. Then a half dozen strikes tinked off Klaw's armor harmlessly.
Before the paladin could react, he was suddenly pushed back, sliding against the mud. A thousand cuts, or an ability like it. Klaw's chest was crisscrossed with cuts through the armor, which dribbled with dark blood.
The Hunter did not follow up, "Demons, if unchecked, lead to this world's end. Their doom is unfortunate, but it must be carried out. This is the burden we share, Paladin. Help me, please."
"Fuck you," Klaw growled.
Shadow: <Just so we are clear, this one ISN'T joining us, right?>
"No," Daggat said out loud.
Klaw tensed, lurching forward. He began to breathe deeper and faster. Rain began to steam off of him, and he roared. Daggat could see the fur of his neck rippling from the increased heart rate.
At the same moment of Klaw's charge, Zuss descended. She threw three shadow blades on her descent. One slashed down his arm, then the hunter knocked the others away with his blade, creating two bell-like tones. This opened him up for a twin slash Klaw.
The hunter lept back, but did not see that it was a ruse. Klaw had used Air Slash to send a mesh of attacks at him. They contacted, slicing into the coat and cutting the unarmored human.
Zuss landed lightly and was already spinning a chain. Daggat, in the meantime, had grabbed a bottle from the inventory. Poison. He applied it to the spear and pointed it at the Hunter. His assistant floated silently above, ready to help. Hrodebert was hiding, blended into the environment.
Harriot sighed solemnly, then brought his blade up into a high stance. He pulsed with power, sending droplets of water flying.
Klaw, likewise, activated his burst of strength skill. He rushed forward like a beast, mud kicking up where his strength was too much even for the earth to handle.
Zuss dashed forward as well, sliding on the hunter's shadow.
The slayer met them both. His attacks were quick and powerful. Zuss dodged two, but then was thrown away by the third. He had used the back of the blade. Klaw slashed upwards, using the momentum to leap. The hunter was forced to step back, as Klaw's strength was enough to destroy his sword.
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
At the height of his jump, Klaw retrieved the hammer from the inventory. He descended like a falling boulder.
Harriot was fast and was able to roll out of the way. But the impact splattered mud, earth, and stone in all directions. It sounded like thunder and shook the young tree nearby.
Daggat was on him then. Unfortunately, the mud had splashed into the Hunter's eyes. Still, Daggat's thrust was knocked away at the last second. He locked the spear in place and used the momentum to flip upwards. His next attack would have been parried as well, if it wasn't for the assistant pushing against his foot with a stone, causing his leg to slip in the mud.
The spear point landed in the center of mass. The weight of Daggat pushed it into his chest. He could hear the bones of his sternum splintering. Rolling away, Daggat used teleknisis to push the spear through, ripping through the human's chest, and retrieve it.
They had won. Poison and massive damage would be inflicted on the hunter soon enough.
Harriot threw himself back with his wings, gaining distance, which Zuss and Klaw were already closing in on. He slid in the mud, too weak to stand, and fumbled for something in a pocket.
He popped it in his mouth, whatever it was, then deftly stood. His wound was healing at an impossibly quick pace.
Klaw and Zuss threw another volley of attacks, but the hunter flew upwards, dodging both.
It hovered there, two dozen feet in the air. Was it going to flee?
Then the hunter grabbed his long blade by the middle. Blood dripped down the blade. "You've shown yourselves to be wicked monsters. I do not know by what right you are a paladin, Klaw. But this is your last night."
With his free hand, he motioned as if to grab an arrow. His own blood swirled into a large arrow, and a string of light bridged the two tips of his sword. When he drew it back, it was with much effort. The metal groaned under the abuse.
He let go with a sigh.
The arrow of blood was too quick to see. It roared through the air, disintegrating the rain around it. The attack tore through Klaw as though he were made of tissue.
"You… bitch." Daggat whispered under his breath. He hurled his spear with all of his mental might, and it soared towards the glowing ascetic.
Just before the spear would contact, the hunter fluttered backwards and moved to smack the spear to the side. But the assistant, more calm in the face of Klaws' potential death, nudged the spear downwards. It dug into the human's leg, causing him to grunt in pain.
Zuss had screamed something and was crawling on top of Klaw. Her small form was shaking, and she was trying to pry open his jaws, but Daggat's focus was on the hunter. He reached for another bloodshot from the sword-bow. This time, aiming at Daggat.
He activated his new cloak while rushing forward. The arctic winds flash froze the rain around Daggat, and they shattered into an icy fog. The Assistant had taken up Daggat's spear and forced the hunter to move before firing. This, and a bit of bad luck on the hunter's side, forced the shot to miss. It slammed into the mud, creating a second crater.
When Daggat could see through the fog, he saw a knife after a knife fly towards the hunter, who was in a duel with the assistant. Effortlessly, Harriot kept the spear at bay and avoided the knives. Each parry and dodge was slower and slower. He was gaining height, trying to flee now, but was winded.
Then his wings gave out. They disappeared, and he dropped, then they reappeared. The hunter seemed to struggle to keep aloft. Closer, Daggat could see the black veins of poison from his earlier attack. It was working its way through his system.
"Zuss! Hook!" Daggat roared. Less than a second later, a chained hook was thrown towards the hunter. Daggat rushed towards Zuss while using telekenesis to grab the hook and wrap it around the hunter's neck.
The two of them yanked hard, and the hunter spun out of control. His wings disappeared, and he landed heavily in the mud. He began to turn on his back, groaning.
Out of seemingly nowhere, Klaw dove at the opponent. This time, there was nothing to save him as Klaw dug both claws into his chest, then simply ripped the human apart.
Daggat let himself fall to his knees, "Hoy boy. That… that was intense. Klaw, you're… okay?"
His wound was gone, but the armor was still destroyed. "I need better armor. I keep breaking them."
Zuss's head bobbed to this side in joy, "Level!" Then she coughed, and her ears drooped, "I saw the human eat a small red candy to heal. I happened to have one too. Lucky us."
"We're going to need to get more of those. Klaw almost died... that was closer than I'd want." Daggat muttered.
Klaw bit a chunk of meat off the human, "Level twenty three Ascetic, by the way. Not a demon hunter."
"I think demon hunter is more of a job or title."
Klaw picked up the long blade and gave it a few swipes. Then he put it in the inventory. "wouldn't have died, by the way."
"Klaw. You had a hole in you."
"So?"
"That kills people."
He shrugged, "I was isolating my blood to my brain and lungs. I wouldn't have bled out. My plan was to wait for you to kill it, then get the redundant organs. That would have saved my life."
"Huh. Well. Very good. Still, that candy thing is potent. Bet their expensive."
Zuss searched through the body.
"Nothing," she said in disappointment, "Except the coat."
"Klaw, take it."
"Why?"
"It will look cool. And you can wear it, we can't."
"There's a hole in it. And it's covered in blood."
"Battle scars."
Klaw shrugged, then took the coat. It was loose on the human, and on Klaw, it was able to cover the armor. It did have a certain striking look to it.
Just then, Daggat felt a wind pulling him north. Every instinct told him to follow it.
Daggat groaned, "Just as I thought we were going to get some sleep tonight, there comes the spirit beast." He grinned at his siblings, "Wanna check it out?"
