"Let's go! We're running here, too." Daggat started to move away.
Klaw grabbed his arm, "Like hell we are. I'm not going to run from a bit of danger."
Daggat glanced at the oncoming adventuring party. At the lead was a dwarf with marble skin. He was frothing at the mouth, screaming. A berserker, for sure. Behind him were two humans and another humanoid. It was like a smaller human, about Daggat's size, if not shorter. A half folk, he remembered. He had met one before. The aura of these adventurers was about the same as his, so fifteen or so.
One of the humans, a woman with a frost-laden cloak that streamed behind her, pulled mana towards her. For a brief moment, a complex spell shape flashed before her.
A bolt of crystalline ice the size of Daggat's head flew at them. It missed its Mark by several feet, soaring above them. However, in its wake, it carried a gale of below-freezing winds.
Daggat and Klaw both had defenses against cold, so it was only a minor inconvenience. Still, that was some impressive magic.
"We're not running FROM them, we're running TOWARDS the giant. You see what I'm thinking?"
Klaw furrowed his eyebrows, then grinned. "Oh, that will be fun to watch."
Daggat and Klaw ran back up the road. Zuss was… somewhere. She'll catch on.
Daggat activated his hyper vocal cords, "Gobs! We found some humans!" Then he changed the pitch of his voice, "let's eat 'em!", then he changed again, "but there's only six of us… Ah, we can handle it!"
Klaw looked at him like he was an idiot. "They aren't going to fall for that."
The berserker bellowed, "There's only six of 'em! Hahahaha!"
Daggat stuck his tongue out at Klaw.
While the berserker ran ahead, the two humans faltered. They did not suffer the penalties to intelligence that their companion had. The male, a young human wearing armor, glanced at their mage and shrugged. Then they followed.
The fourth member of their party, the half-folk, was nowhere to be seen. Of course, their sneaky team member wasn't either.
-
As soon as the alarm started, Zuss was up a tree. It was wise to begin any confrontation hidden. She heard what Daggat and Klaw had said and picked up on the plan immediately. To lure the humanoids to the giant, then pick off the survivor. It was a cowardly tactic, but in a good way. Using what you could to get the most out of your fight. It was a very goblin tactic.
But something worried her. She watched the small one scamper away and hide.
He was like her. The sneaky one. The watchful one. The clever one.
The creature would be a problem. So, she watched him. It was difficult to notice the little thing, even with her enhanced vision. His stealth skill surpassed hers. She had to keep complete focus on him.
Soon, he was ahead of the others. Moving with enhanced speed into the shadow-filled tree line. Scouting ahead. No doubt in communication with the others.
Zuss moved to intercept.
She understood that it wasn't smart to attack him on her own. But the others were pushing themselves hard. So would she. For Zuss, that meant taking on personal challenges like this. If she couldn't handle it, it meant she was just too weak.
She was sure it was safe to kill it. Just to be sure, though, she sent Daggat a quick message.
Shadow: <Any problems if I kill one?>
Daggy Two-arm: <Have fun, but only one. Let me know if you need help.>
Zuss slid through the shadows, stalking her prey. She took care to make no noise. It was like a human, but about her size. Large ears, hands, and feet. This one had a serious look on its face and a bandoleer of small knives. That told her he was likely to throw them. That was good; thrown knives could be dodged.
When the half-folk stopped under a low branch, she knew it was her chance to strike.
After deepening the shadows around her, she then converted it into a long rope dart. Her descent was swift and as elegant as she could make it, seamlessly following a path laid before her by her climbing skill. She allowed herself to free-fall, spun her body to gain as much momentum as she could, then hurled the dart.
Her enemy did not see her coming, nor did he hear the attack. Yet, he was still notified by some sort of skill. A danger sense that told him to dive out of the way. Zuss caught the branch with her feet, then swung down.
In response to the attack, the half-folk threw a fan of knives at her. Zuss saw an opening between them, then pushed off the branch, diving through them.
She landed into a roll on the soft earth and converted her weapon into daggers. Her enemy had leaped back and clicked two knives together.
As he did, two copies of himself appeared. One jumped to the left, one stood still, and the last jumped to the right. Only one had a heat signature. Zuss had yet to encounter illusions like this, but she adapted easily. Her knives flew towards the real one. One, and then another. Her momentum from the second throw was used to begin spinning a shadow rope dart she summoned instantly.
The enemy dodged the first two attacks, but was obviously caught off guard. He threw more knives at her, as did his illusions. But she dodged them all. The false knives were allowed to pass through her.
Her rope dart speared towards him, but he wasn't ready for the change of weaponry. It dug into a shoulder, just next to the armpit. That arm would be useless.
It cried out in pain with a high-pitched voice, then tossed something down with its free hand. Thick, black smoke filled the area. She grinned under her mask. That was a mistake.
Zuss had the potion in her hand a half second later and drank it after dodging a flying knife.
The Drakeheart potion burned through her as she transformed. New, smoke-like wings appeared, allowing her to leap high into the air. Through the black smoke, the half-folk scout glowed like a furnace. It was running.
She descended like a hawk, gliding through the shadows of her own smoke on the branches as though she was skating on ice. She climbed and leaped, nearly flying after it. If it reached its allies, then Zuss would lose. Maybe not die, but it would still be a loss.
The fear was almost visible through the heat vision when he looked back at her, chasing him down as a smoke bat from hell. Zuss summoned a dagger to throw, but he threw first. This one was augmented by some sort of skill. It flew fast and true, too fast for her to dodge. But she had the knife ready. Almost by accident and mostly on reflex, she blocked the knife. It made a beautiful, bell-like sound as it danced upwards. With her new juggling skills, Zuss dismissed a shadow dagger and caught it on its way down. All the while, she continued her chase.
For no other reason than to impress her foe, she jumped from tree trunk to tree trunk, using her wings to enhance her movements, then threw his own knife back at him.
At the same moment, the scout jumped and spun. The knives he had thrown earlier were miraculously back in the bandoleer.
He threw a wide fan of knives just as Zuss's attack caught him directly in the throat. His danger sense skill was either used or it didn't work when he was in the middle of an attack. Or he had simply made a mistake. Whichever the reason, Zuss had won. Not a single blade had cut her.
The creature burbled before her, trying to stop the bleeding in its throat. Zuss approached, walking with a sway that left ribbons of smoke behind her. The scout summoned something from its inventory, a red candy. Zuss snatched it from his hands with the speed of a viper.
"What is this?" She asked. Then realized he couldn't speak. She kicked aside his hand, which was reaching for a blade, and then ripped out the knife stuck in his throat.
[You have slain - Mirror Scout, level 15.]
Zuss then made sure no one could see and allowed herself a few happy hops. She had done it! And without a single wound. A pleasant change from most of her encounters lately.
A distant crash reminded her of the others. Something big had just been destroyed or moved. Looting could come later. She dashed in that direction as fast as she could. Her potion still had plenty of time left.
-
Daggat and Klaw had a head start on the adventures. They were pretty quick, though. And Klaw was not. He had slowed down significantly since he put on some weight. They would catch up soon.
"Assistant, get me three gremlins."
While the assistant handed him the potions, he removed the corks with his teeth, then telekinetically added the teeth. He dropped them at his feet as they ran.
The gremlins sprang to life with a victorious, but tiny, roar. They were promptly smashed to death by the stone dwarf.
That bought Daggat and Klaw enough time to race ahead. Soon, they could hear the crashing and thrashing of a stuck giant.
"Nooo!" Cut through the sounds of the giant. Looking back, the human male had fallen to his knees, lamenting the death of whoever it was Zuss just killed. He assumed it was Zuss. He couldn't help but feel pride swell.
Then, with a tremendous crash, the giant dislodged the fallen tree that had barred its escape. Three victorious squeals echoed off the distant mountains.
Klaw skidded to a stop. "Ah, fuck. That's not good, right?"
"Well. Maybe?"
The giant stepped into the road. It's three heads continuing to bicker. Daggat glanced at the party of adventurers. They glared daggers at the two of them, seemingly finding unity in the death of their companion.
"Goblin…" three voices grumbled at once. The giant, likewise, was staring at them with murderous intent.
Daggat chuckled nervously, "Perhaps we can… talk this out?"
Both sides charged at Daggat and Klaw at once. It would be just a few moments before they both clashed.
Even Klaw had panic on his face, "We can take the humans. Not sure about the giant."
Daggat had a sudden flash of inspiration, "Humans, this is the giant you paid us to capture! But it escaped!" Daggat ran towards the tree line. Klaw followed.
"Humans! How dare you trap Triboar! We will SMASH you!"
"Trickster goblins! End them before their tricks get more people killed." Roared the male. He seemed to be their leader.
"No! If we leave the giant, it will destroy the inn." The mage wailed.
"THEN LET'S GO GIANT HUNTING!" Roared the dwarf. His rage activated again, and he charged ahead.
Well, this was working out pretty well, Daggat thought. The two of them turned to watch the battle from the safety of the forest.
The mage did something, Daggat wasn't sure if it was a spell or a skill. Arctic winds surrounded her, and ice began forming on her skin. The mana in the air converted to a light blue, crystalline essence, Frost Essence, in an instant. Then, it coalesced into her spell. The bolt of ice was larger than before, and it slammed into the giant. The ice speared through its side, then the coming cold winds froze the blood in place.
The giant howled in pain, but was not slowed. It scooped its hand through the road, gathering a handful of dirt, gravel, and stones, then scattered them over the party.
Stones clattered against the dwarf's skin harmlessly, the warrior lifted a shield, and the mage summoned a wall of ice.
Daggat laughed in glee. He wasn't sure which side to root for. Watching real adventurers fight was fascinating. Changing the mana in the air into essence, then using it to boost spells, was absolutely inspired. Something like that might work with his alchemy, if he did it right.
The Dwarf and Giant met in combat first. Surprisingly nimble, the dwarf rolled under the swipe of the giant's fist, then swung his mighty hammer. It collided with the giant's shin with a loud crack.
Daggat almost fell over from the shock waves as the giant hopped on one foot. What a hit! But it wasn't enough to stop the beast for long. It reared its foot back, then kicked as hard as it could. The dwarf was too slow to get out of the way; he was done.
But the warrior was quick. He dashed in front of the dwarf and lifted his shield. Just before the impact, the shield flashed. When the foot collided, the warrior did not move. Instead, the toes of the giant cracked and popped, and the shield shattered.
Then the giant was falling, tripped on the warrior's shield skill. The mage dashed out of the way and measured the giant's fall with a glance. Just before it landed, she summoned another wall of ice. This one was sharp, like a massive ax head.
It sliced Pork clean from the giant's shoulders.
"They work together well," Klaw murmured. "Maybe the wolf was right. We've got a lot more training to do."
Daggat groaned, "And look at those abilities! Skills. Not fair, only mortals get them."
The humans caught their breath. The giant wasn't moving. Was it dead?
A large hand closed over the mage. It was not dead, not yet. She screamed in shock and pain as the giant began to stand.
"UNHAND HER!" Roared the dwarf. He slammed his hammer against the giant's wrist. But this only infuriated the giant and swiftened the mage's death.
She was crushed in his hand like an insect. Blood dripped down the giant's hand, and it dropped the mage. Every limb was broken, and her ribs were caved in. Her corpse flopped to the ground like a limp sack.
The warrior, overcome with emotion, ran to her side. The speed of a giant was not to be underestimated, as that opened the human to an attack. Its fist pounded down on the warrior three times. The first cracked the armor. The second killed the warrior. The third only smeared blood through the road.
Falling to his knees, the dwarf began to roar. Then, he summoned something, a metal bone. The dwarf snapped it and began to grow. "I did not think today would be the day I call upon my ancestor's bones!"
Crawling to one knee, Pig spoke, "This death is on your hands. It is unwise to trap a beast you cannot handle."
Soon, the dwarf was doubled in size. Klaw offered Daggat a piece of orc jerky he was eating. Daggat accepted.
The berserker was still smaller than the giant by half, so he leaped back to gain distance. Gripping his hammer in both hands, the giant dwarf spun once, then twice, a third time, and released the hammer. It flew like a meteor.
It would have missed the giant, who had leaned to avoid it. But the hammer curved in mid air, and collided in Pig's forehead. The hammer sank into the giant's skull, killing that head. Now, only Boar remained.
"Come on, Klaw. We gotta kill that dwarf before the giant does." Daggat started to move forward.
"Not sure if I can."
"It attacked us, right? Surely that counts."
"We'll find out."
While Klaw and Daggat charged, the giant and dwarf were in heated combat. This time, the dwarf was able to resist the giant's blows. The dwarf had summoned twin axes and was hacking at the crippled giant. Soon, the dwarf would win.
Daggat sent the spear ahead, guiding it to spear the dwarf. While his attention was focused on the giant, the spear collided with the dwarf's temple. But, it only cracked the skin, not piercing through.
"What!?" The dwarf turned towards Daggat, just in time for Klaw to slam his palm into the dwarf's navel. He then ripped out a chunk of stone.
Klaw winced and shook his hand. It must not feel great, clawing stone.
The dwarf ignored his gaping hole of a stomach and raised his axes high to chop Klaw in two. But the giant grabbed his arms at their height and swung the dwarf like a club into a tree. He then smashed him again and again into the tree until the dwarf shrank.
He let go of the dead dwarf, then turned on Daggat and Klaw.

Daggat gave the giant a big smile, "Well done! Inspired by your might, we turned on the dwarf who forced us to trap you."
Boar glared at him, "What?"
"My brother and I. We turned against them because we saw what they did to you. Right, Klaw?"
Klaw furrowed his brow, "Uh, I'm not sure what's happening."
Daggat spoke over him, "The point is, we are not your enemy! We want to help you. You've taken quite the beating. Your poor… other heads."
The giant, too wounded to fight it, gave in to Daggat's beguiling aura. "Yeah… heads broken. Don't know what to do now." Blood poured out of the decapitated head like a small waterfall.
"We have a doctor who can fix you up. I think. Then we can get our revenge!"
"Revenge?"
"Yes! Against the goblins that turned on you. We know where they live."
"If you can get me revenge, then-" Just then, a small figure flew from the trees. It trailed smoke behind it as it clung to the giant's back, then rose to the back of Boar's neck.
The giant reached to scratch at the intrusion, but couldn't reach the spot. Then its face contorted into pain and rage as whatever it was started to stab.
One of the stabs seemed to explode with force, and another did as well after another half dozen stabs. Critical hits. Soon, the giant's spinal cord was damaged enough to kill it.
It fell to the ground with a crash, dead.
Klaw grinned. "Hey! Level up."
Zuss stepped onto the giant's head and looked back at her handiwork. Several dozen dagger stabs to the base of the neck. "I got a feat! Giant slayer."
"Zuss! Why did you do that?!"
Her ears drooped, "What? That was the plan!" Her smoke form was beginning to dissipate.
"I was trying to recruit it."
"You could have told me!"
