131 - Daggat: Initiate of the Mask


Facing a spirit beast with one arm, alone, while protecting a helpless ally was a walk in the park compared to Daggat's current predicament.

He was forbidden to leave his bed. Three times he had tried to escape, each time he was foiled by an angry Oni. It had gotten so bad that, at one point, Hunter had physically held him down for almost an hour.

But, even the stubbornness of a goblin could wear down and, finally, Daggat relented. He would rest and let himself heal.

Hunter never left his side, using his new ability every hour. The first use stopped the bleeding, and by noon, the pain had dulled to a constant ache. He spent the time reading, planning, and plotting.

Finally, he was ready to share what he had learned. Not from his adventures the previous day, he had already recounted that tale. He had fully combed through the path book. He opened the group chat.

Daggat: <Alright! I've found some neat stuff in the path book. Zuss, swing by when you can. I think you will benefit from it the most.>

The Shadow: <Alright.>

Klaw: <Who the fuck is the Shadow?>

Zuss: <Never mind, it was stupid.>

ZBFF: <Noooo, put it back.>

Mage of Mass Destruction: <She's right, Shadow. Change it back!>

Daggat chuckled at the exchange and made his own nickname.

Daggy Two-Arm: <Let's not make fun of Shadow. She could be anywhere.>

"You are right about that."

Daggat flinched, "Gah! Stop that!"

Zuss stepped out of the corner, "So, what is it? A masked assassin class?" There was a gleam in her shadowy eyes. Excitement?

"Ah… uh… no. The Initiate of the Mask. Not… uh, assassiny."

"Thievish? Roguish? Masked heroism?"

Daggat thought it would be best to tell her directly. "It's a clown path."

Zuss narrowed her eyes at him, "What?"

"It's a performance thing. Doing tricks and whatnot."

She turned to leave, "waste of time."

Daggat waved a hand at her, "WAIT! Look, I don't think you should be a clown. Obviously. But there are some neat things in there. Especially for you."

She turned, then crossed her arms, "Fine, but it better not be stupid."

Daggat hesitated, "Ok, just a warning… it SOUNDS stupid. But it isn't."

She sighed, "Just tell me."

"Alright, so. The bulk of the booklet is a list of different requirements, skills, feats, skill synergies, and the like. All so you can conform to this specific troupe's style. Technically, only troupe members should have this book. Too bad we're rebels."

Hunter snorted, then continued snoring. He was taking a nap, which would have been a fine time to escape. But Daggat did not want to risk him going feral, and that would have been the stupidest way for that to happen.

"I take it there are some feats we should go for."

"A few, yes. One in particular would mesh really nicely with your shadow stuff powers. Master Juggler, which grants Advanced Object Manipulation."

"I already manipulate objects… advancedly."

"Which is why it's perfect. The skill allows you to treat all objects as the same for any object-related skill. This includes weapon skills, but the emphasis is on mundane stuff."

"I don't follow."

"So, you could, I don't know, use a broom as a dagger."

"Why would I do that?"

"I DON'T KNOW! It was just an example."

Hunter snorted, then coughed. On reflex, he leaned forward, then tapped Daggat. Six hours' worth of healing prickled at him. It always itched.

He blinked his eyes open, then smiled, "Zuss! Hello."

"Hi. Daggat was telling me how using a broom as a weapon is good."

"Ma always says clean as you go, makes it easier. Same thing with fighting."

Daggat shook his head, "Use your imagination! You can make any shape with your shadows, right? Now, apply that to skills. ANY object skill you gain applies to weapons, too. For example, take the skill, Serpent Rope. It allows you to manipulate a rope or string as though it were alive."

"… and if I used that with a rope dart, I can snake around enemy defenses."

Daggat clapped his hand on his knee, "YES! You get it."

She summoned a rope dart and began twirling it. "What do I have to do?"

"That's the tricky part. You need to learn three natural skills. Contact Juggling, Toss Juggling, and Flow Arts."

"Oh, I have that."

"Which one?"

"Flow Arts. I think it's…" she twirled the chain dart around her in short, smooth arcs. "That. Got it while practicing."

"Great!" Daggat summoned the booklet from the inventory, then flipped to a page. Illustrations showed the process for learning to juggle. He showed her, "Now, the book has pictures. Lucky for you. This is how you juggle. Start with that, then you can learn the next bit."

Her rope dart turned into three orbs, "This?" She started to toss and catch the balls. At first, there was no rhythm. But after a few rotations, they smoothly followed each other.

"I think so. It might take a while to actually learn-"

"Got it."

"What, the skill?"

"Uh-huh. Toss Juggling, apprentice. Easy."

Hunter clapped, "Good job!"

Daggat grumbled, "Well, not all of us have two arms. Show off."

"Oh, in that case," Zuss balanced on one foot, then began to juggle with one hand and one prehensile foot.

"How are you doing that so easily?"

Zuss dropped the balls, then shrugged. "To my reflexes, they move pretty slow. Just… grab them and toss them up. It's not hard when most of your points go into dexterity-related stuff."

"Right, that was another thing. Did Elyndris tell you how to boost your dexterity?"

Zuss nodded, "I am close, actually. Ultranatural Body Control. It's an upgrade I can buy. Works like Klaw's muscle thing. But better, I think. Costs four points without special stuff, so…"

Daggat grinned, "You'll be even faster and dodgier soon. Very nice."

Zuss snatched the book from Daggat, "Anything else in this book?"

"Careful with that! Yes. But, some of it's useless. Got something for everyone, though, so that's nice."

Hunter leaned in, "Me too?"

Daggat had almost forgotten he was there, "Yep. So, the troupe has three paths, not just one, actually. They are called Masked Actor, Illusionist, and Stage Master. Not classes, just sort of… titles for their people. Anyway, the Stage Master has some neat things."

Zuss had created a ring of shadow and was moving it in a smooth circle, frowning, "Hey, so can I go?"

Daggat waved her off, "Sure, send in… someone else. Whoever you find first. Anyway, Stage Master is a support role for the troupe. It makes sure all the backend stuff works. Like props and… lights and stuff."

Hunter waved Zuss goodbye, "Okay, sort of like what I do. With the cooking, cleaning, and healing."

"Uh, sure. Yeah, why not? There is a neat little skill they can get. Mood Lighting."

"What's-"

Suddenly, the door slammed open, "Heard you were handing out feats! Where's mine?" Klaw sauntered in, grinning.

Daggat continued as if Klaw wasn't there, "It allows you to change the color of a light, and the different colors have a minor effect on mood. Fear, sorrow, joy, that sort of thing. I bet it would combine with something of yours. Just smells right, you know?"

"I can try. How do I get it?"

Klaw mumbled something to himself, then sat on a chair backwards. He summoned some sort of fruit as a snack while he waited. When did they get fruit?

Daggat contorted his fingers into a strange shape, then looked at the shadow they cast from Hunter's hearth, "Well, it's hard with three fingers. Shadow Puppets. Work on shadow puppetry, and it's a skill you can get from it. You'll have to get the book from Zuss."

Hunter nodded sagely, then settled back into his make-shift chair. It was originally a table; Hunter barely fit in the room. He had to crawl through the door.

Klaw spat a seed, "My turn?"

"Klaw! My dearest brother. How's your fashion sense?"

"I only wear clothes because you all complain."

"Well, it's time to change that attitude! I have something I think you'll like."

"Nah, I know you. You're just trying to get me to wear a silly hat."

"If I were pranking you, would I do it openly?"

Klaw narrowed his eyes at him, "What do you got?"

"So, that book. It's for actors. One of the common skills they get is called Change of Wardrobe."

"Zuss warned me it would be stupid."

Daggat laughed, "Maybe. The skill allows you to store up to three outfits in a storage space, sort of like our inventory. Then, you can swap between them in a moment."

"So?"

"Your ARMOR. It's a suit, isn't it? Imagine you can switch into the armor in an instant. Then, maybe you find a magic outfit. You can switch between them with ease!"

Klaw seemed to give it some serious thought, "That would be handy, but I am not sure it's worth an entire skill point."

"For a regular warrior, maybe not. But, you're clever… when it comes to fighting. Here's my vision: you wear nothing… putting your enemy on guard. Then, right before they attack, you switch to armor mode! Then switch back so you can rip into them fast! Benefits of armor and no armor at the same time!"

"Huh, that's sort of how I fight with the claws now. Alright… what does this have to do with fashion?"

Daggat grinned at him, "Turns out, fashion is a natural skill. Change of Wardrobe is one of those."

Klaw seemed conflicted, "I'll think about it."

"Great! Now, get Anath or Elyndris on your way out."

Klaw growled, "Get them yourself, stubby."

He stormed out of the room.

Hunter looked between the brothers as Klaw left, "Are you two fighting?"

Daggat let out a chortle, "Yes. Have been for… however old I am. Lost track. Eight?" He shrugged, "Just brother stuff."

"I had brothers," Hunter pointed out.

"Well, yeah. You're brother didn't leave your sister to die, did they?"

"Sort of."

Daggat coughed uncomfortably, "Well, anyway. It's fine. Just how we are."

He opened his group message again.

Daggy Two-Arm: <Anath, Elyndris. It's just you two left. Come and get your pathbook stuff.>

"Well, I don't think you should fight. Zuss, too. It's like they don't trust you."

"Nah, they trust me," Daggat smiled at the memories, "It's just been a bit since I've done a proper prank. I was quite the trickster."

Still was, he thought. He did recently trick Hrodbert into taking another step down the path of the demon. There was potential there. He'd need to solve the angel problem first.

Anath and Elyndris walked into the room together. Anath was scratching at a wad of web that had stuck one hand's fingers together.

"What wisdom does the assassin book have for us?" Elyndris asked.

Daggat sighed, "Ain't an assassin book. It's for actors and performers."

"Really?" Both Elyndris and Anath asked, in opposing tones.

Hunter chuckled, "Don't worry, Daggat is smart. He found good stuff for us."

"Yes, yes, I am." Daggat agreed, "Elyndris! Did you know about spell feats?"

"What? NO! That's a thing?" She started to hop up and down in excitement, which sent Anath giggling.

"Yup. There's a feat called False Spell. Cast fifty damaging spells without harming anyone. In a row. Apparently, it gives you something called a Ghost Engine? Where the spell cannot touch anything."

Elyndris huffed, "What's the point of that?"

Daggat shrugged, "Don't know. But, hey, it's a feat."

"Fair. I can do that in two days. Three if anyone bothers me. Would increase my skill in casting, at least. Maybe faster, I don't know how many I have cast already."

Anath gave her a sympathetic look, "You want to do it all at once?"

"Yes. Why not?"

Hunter yawned, then said, "That's a lot of work."

"No more than usual. Unlike all of you, I am not bogged down with trivial matters such as reading or weapons training. Or napping."

Anath said, "You shouldn't work all the time. I don't think that's healthy."

"What else am I to do? I can't afford rest!"

Daggat scratched his stump, "Not resting may make it harder for you."

"Oh, sure. Says the goblin who's been sleeping all day. If we go now, you can evolve and heal. Lucky you."

Daggat was beginning to sense she was becoming upset, "Hey, well, get you evolved too. As soon as we figure out how."

"Bah. Whatever. Just… do Anath's book thing." She continued to grumble under her breath.

"Oh, right. Anath, yours is weird."

"Oh… good?"

"Wire Hanging. It allows you to control a metal wire that you hang from. Actors use it to fly on stage, without actually having to fly."

"Ooh, do webs count?"

"Don't know. Still, it could be fun to try. If it doesn't, we can find a way to remove it or work with it anyway. According to the book, you unlock it as an option after learning the acrobatics and acting Natural skills. So, it might be a bit. I can show you some acrobatics stuff."

Anath stood straight, then spoke with a strange tilt to her voice, "Then I shall learn to act, my lord!"

Elyndris winced, "Please do it quickly."

Anath and Elyndris left together, talking about their respective tasks ahead of them.

"What about you?" Hunter asked.

"Hmm?"

"Didn't you find something in the book? For yourself."

"Oh. No, not really. I could get that object feat, too, I suppose. But, I'll work on that if it becomes relevant."

"You said everyone got something, though."

"Well, I did get something from the book. An opportunity to feel out the system more. It's so much fun, digging through it. Think of it, Hunter. We've got so many options already, but we've hardly scratched the surface. Imagine what a blacksmith would have access to? A dozen different crafting skills, each with its own quirks and divine skills. Imagine the feats for a baker! Making a hundred cakes, and now you no longer have to lick the spoon."

"Is that a feat!?"

"No. I don't know, I made it up. Point is… there's so much we can exploit. So many angles to explore. Just… makes you think. Maybe the best path forward isn't through obvious fighty things."

Hunter yawned again. He hadn't been sleeping much, "yeah… It's a lot." His eyes drifted closed. Soon, he was snoring again.
