109 - Daggat: The Altar of Sahrazuel


Daggat and the crew gathered around the small building where the altar was kept. It was early morning. A few dozen humans milled about, soaking up the healing effect of the bonfire.

Willow and the others were talking to humans, getting their sides of the events. They wanted a full picture of the last few day's events.

"It's a tad… small," Daggat said.

"Would be crowded," Anath said.

"We could go one at a time?" Hunter suggested.

Daggat shook his head, "We've been split up too often. We're going to finish it as a party. Hunter, Klaw. Tear it down."

It didn't take long. The building was old and simple. Little more than sticks and mud. They cleared away the debris and scattered the skulls, leaving the altar open to the air.

"What are you doing?" asked a voice. Pat watched from a short distance, a scowl on her face.

Daggat gave her a predatory grin, "We're going to take the altar."

"Like hell you are." She took a few steps forward, then hesitated.

"We really are. Do you want to try to stop us?" Zuss said.

"It's the center of our faith," Pat said shakily.

"Oh, well in that case-" Daggat began, "Oh, wait. I don't care. Look, your people are mostly dead. Ketil can't take us. We're in charge now, and we want the altar."

"I should have never have vouched for you." Pat shook with anger.

"Pat, I'm sorry, but… he's made up his mind. For what it is worth, we never came here to cause trouble." Hunter said, kneeling to her height, "All that has happened was because of the crone and the coming threat."

"You all killed our protectors. NOT the crone. You should have been the ones to fall." Tears began dripping down her face.

Daggat rolled his eyes, and he boomed "Hey, Keaton, come get this woman before she hurts herself."

The hearth tender looked tired, but he quickly took her away, speaking softly to her.

"Poor woman," Anath said.

"Yeah, life sucks. Now, ALTAR!" Daggat opened the bag of larvae. They had chewed a hole through the bag and it was a pain to recollect them. "Hey. Wake up."

The altar did nothing.

"How do we… work it?" Klaw asked.

"Do we give it a coin?" Zuss said.

Daggat threw a coin at it. Nothing happened.

"WAKE UP YOU STUPID MONSTER!" Elyndris yelled at it.

Then, the altar shifted. Its effigies both moved and stayed still. It took the form of a warg from the waist up. Each body part seemingly made of bone.

"What do you want?!" It growled.

Daggat blinked in surprise, "Morning. You've been watching what's going on?"

"I have been at rest." It noticed Zuss, "Ah… little predator. We meet again."

Zuss waved at it.

"I'll catch you up, real quick like. Zuss said you had an interest in our exploits. Mary, the crone who claimed to be your altar keeper, we killed her. We slew the protectors of this town. Slaughtered dozens of goblins, killed a big bear monster, defeated a paladin, and befriended your true altar keeper."

"All impressive deeds. You speak the truth," The altar spoke, "Where is the keeper?"

"He refuses to come into town to see you. He's abandoned you. Is Bobby truly the keeper you want?" Daggat summoned the spear with the crone's head attached, for emphasis.

"I sense you speak the truth as well." It growled, "What has become of him?"

"He lives in the trees, raising larvae. He has no interest in you."

"Then I release the coward." It faced Zuss, looming over her, "You have failed your quest, little one."

"Wait! What? We brought you news of him! We found him." Zuss snarled.

"You were to bring him to me."

Daggat waved a hand admissibly, "Whatever, it's just one quest reward. Since you are here, would you kindly assist us with a little ritual? We would like to sacrifice monsters to you."

"No."

"Why not!?"

"I require a keeper."

"Orc shit! The questing altar didn't need one."

"I do not know this altar, but if it granted you quests, then its keeper is alive and well."

The tree. It must be the keeper.

"Well… we plan to move you to our manor. How does one become a keeper?"

"We simply strike an accord. If I deem them worthy."

"And what is involved? What do you receive?"

"A keeper of an Altar of Sahrzuel would gain access to all altar menus. They may spend tokens to purchase boons and benefits for the community in which it resides."

"Really? That's… another system to learn. Great. Well, I-" Daggat hesitated. He was about to request to become the keeper. But, he had a gut feeling that it would be better if he was a keeper of a different altar. Perhaps the questing altar. He turned to his companions, "Anyone fancy being an Altar Keeper?"

"No thanks. Too much work." Klaw said.

"I would never work with an angel," hissed Elyndris.

"I'll do it if no one wants to," Hunter suggested.

"No, that one is too… tame." The altar grumbled. Hunter looked a tad embarrassed. "What about the little predator?"

All eyes turned to Zuss.

"Me?" She asked.

"Sure, why not?" Daggat said.

"Ooh, I bet you'd make a great keeper!" Anath said.

"I will grant you a gift, as is customary." The Altar's jowls quivered.

"I… guess. Okay." Zuss said.

"Then, we come to an agreement. For you, my ally." The altar's paw seemed to twist in on itself. Then it presented a glowing potion seemingly out of nowhere.

"What is this?" Zuss took the potion.

"Biotrait potion. The customary gift is the Ichor of the Beast, but you are already a monster."

"Ah… thanks. Klaw?" She tossed it to him.

"Really?" He asked.

She shrugged, "You don't have a biotrait. Can we do the ritual now? The one that gives us a free upgrade."

"As long as you have the sacrifice. I see plenty of humans to choose from." It growled.

"Hold on, before we do that. I am contractually obligated to ask you if you know a way to return an untethered to life." Daggat said.

"I know nothing of the untethered. You must speak to an Altar of Mihr."

"Great, thanks. How does this work?" Daggat brandished a larva.

The Altar growled, "a simple larva? Pathetic… but technically acceptable. Devour it in my presence. It is enough."

Daggat shrugged, then swallowed the larva whole.

[You have devoured - Larva, level 2. Sahrazuel accepts your sacrifice.]

One by one, the rest of the part did the same. Anath hesitated, but she, too, devoured a larva. She bit it with her fangs, waited a moment, then seemed to drink the larva from the inside out.

Everyone stared at the look of bliss on Anath's face. She blushed a deep red when she noticed.

"What?" She said, pointing her nose to the air, "I can eat however I want to."

"Can I try it?" Asked Zuss.

Anath handed over the half-drained larva with a coy smile. Zuss lapped at it experimentally before retching and spitting it out. Klaw burst out laughing. Even Hunter chuckled.

"How do you drink that?"

Anath just shrugged.

Daggat let the satisfaction flow through him. They had completed their set goal. Well, one of them. A side tangent, really. Still, they had done it. Now, the next biotrait purchased should come with a free mutation.

"Alright! Upgrades time. Everyone, to status void." Daggat said.

Each naturally took their position in a circle. The same order that they generally sat in when eating together or when Daggat talked to the group.

"I know what I plan to purchase. Does anyone need any help?"

Anath raised a hand. "Umm… I'm not really sure what I should get."

"Then let's start with you." She moved her stat window so everyone could see. "Let's see… you have a biotrait. That's good. To use the boon, we'd need to buy something new."

The assistants scrolled through her stats, with Spider taking the head.

"New Genesis options, yes yes. Biological immortality-"

"What!?" Daggat almost screamed. IMMORTALITY is a biotrait?

"It only means she will not age. It's hardly immortality."

"Still, that's insane," Daggat said.

"Should probably wait a while. You are still young. Maybe pick it up after you've matured." Elyndris suggested.

Daggat grumbled. HE wanted immortality. At least he knew it was an option. "Elyndris, do we know what gives it?"

"Umm… I don't know. Elves, I think. Which makes sense, she is an elf now."

"I'm a what?" Anath asked.

"An elf. You can tell by the pointy ears."

Anath poked her ears. "Huh. So, arachnes are elves?"

"Maybe it's like how bugbears and goblins are both goblinoids?" Klaw added.

Daggat shrugged, "Maybe, Spider, anything else interesting?"

"Yes, yes. Lots and lots."

"I have a suggestion." The Assistant chimed in. "Strength Infusion. I believe it will allow her to infuse various parts of her body with strength essence. Consider, what happens when you infuse razor-thin webbing with strength essence?"

"I like it… Anath, what do you think?"

"Imagine what kind of fabric I could make from it too," Anath said. "I like it."

They discussed a few other options. An aura of strength was available, as a few spider-related options, the possibility of wings. In the end, they decided on Strength Infusion. Once selected, she was prompted to upgrade it. Quick infusion, External infusion, and Override Essence. Increase the speed at which she could infuse parts of her body, infuse objects she touched, or replace essence infusion with strength essence. The latter would only be useful with external infusion.

Quick Infusion was the ultimate choice. With it, she was able to infuse her webbing as quickly as she made it.

"Alright! Who's next?" Daggat asked. No one said anything, "Ennie Minnie Minny- Hunter. You're up."

"Okay! I have lots of points. Four."

"You said you had a plan?" Klaw said.

"Yup! Devour Essence! Got it from my core. I can eat magic and convert it into hunger essence."

The group gave an appropriate amount of oohs and ahs.

"That's not all," he continued, "I have the biotrait Gorger. It says the more I devour, the stronger I become."

"You think… magic would work?" Daggat asked skeptically.

"It SAYS devour essence. Devour." Hunter huffed.

"Makes sense to me," Zuss said.

"Elyndris? Any input?" Daggat asked.

"If I had shoulders, I would shrug."

"I say do it! If it doesn't work, you can just eat a lot." Anath said.

Hunter nodded and made the appropriate choice. His options for upgrades were Deep Draw, Selective Hunger, and Quick Digestion. Deep Draw allowed him to devour magic in a greater range, Selective Hunger allowed him to choose essence types to ignore, and Quick Digestion converted the essence into hunger essence faster. He decided on Selective Hunger.

"I have enough to get the apex. Should I? I can do it for Gorger or Devour Essence." Hunter asked.

"What're Gorger upgrades?"

"Extended Feast, which makes it last longer, and Large Feast, which makes it stronger."

"Which do you like more?"

"Hmm… Gorger makes me stronger. But, I want to help you guys. So, maybe Devour Essence so I can make enemies weaker?"

"What about Spellbrand? We need to find out what it does." Elyndris said.

"Yeah, how does it work?" Zuss asked.

"Well, I think I can cast it. I've got an image in my brain. But I don't know what it does. And if it came from oni… I don't think it will be good."

"Cast it!" Klaw cheered.

"But, I don't want to hurt anyone."

"Eh, everyone's already hurt. Just… aim it up, if you can. And there ain't too many people around us. I want to see it too" Daggat said.

"Well, alright. Everyone back up."

Hunter stood and took a few steps back. He lifted his arms and focused for a moment. It took almost a minute, but suddenly the faint outline of a spell construct appeared in front of him. It lasted only an instant before the spell was cast, but Daggat could already tell it was incredibly complicated.

The wind sucked towards Hunter. It was strong enough that Daggat had to brace himself. Then, Hunter slowly moved his arms. The wind followed the motions, as though he was controlling an invisible ball of wind. Daggat watched as the ambient essence in the air reacted to the spell, drawing into it. He had a curious look on his face as he instinctually understood how the spell worked. He pushed the spell towards the bonfire. The flame seemed to be sucked into it, forming a ball of flame. The Oni continued to move his arms about, guiding the ball of flame and wind, before pushing the flame back into the pile of fuel.

Hunter released the spell, gasping. "That, uh, is hard to control. Ooh, I got a feat. Fledging mage."

"What a complex spell! Far beyond what I can do." Elyndris said, "How does it work."

The humans were speechless. Many of them fled once the fire began to move. But, they still kept their distance.

"When I cast it, it asked for a name. Dance of Wind and Flame. It allows me to move wind and fire at the same time."

"You know, Hunter. Sometimes, your friendly, harmless nature makes me very, very sad." Daggat said. "What about the spellbrands upgrades?"

"I've already read the upgrades," The Assistant said, "it seems the upgrades are not for the spell itself but for the concept of spellbrands. He can make them easier to cast, gain another spell, or make his spell brands more powerful."

"I'd say focus on it if I didn't know you'd only use it to light fires. Go for Devour Essence. Then you can power your spell."

Hunter nodded and made the required purchases.

"Huh. The apex says the range and speed of the devour are greatly affected. It also says that my will is five higher for the purpose of taking someone's essence. Does will matter?" Hunter scratched his head.

"Yup, will is important to casters," came another voice. Ivory. "What was that spell?"

"Oh, Hunter has a spellbrand from evolving. We were experimenting. Tell us more about that." Daggat said as he left the status void.

"Well, there's a knack to it. Will determines how strong of a mental grip you have on magic."

"I've had my essence drawn without my consent before. Will didn't seem to do anything."

"Oh, there's a trick to it. If you feel your magic being used, envision it being pulled back. You'll get a hang of it."

"Interesting…" Daggat looked at Elyndris. "Guess you have to ask, now. Once we figure out how to do that."

"Bah, as if your will could match mine anyway."

"What are you all doing?" Ivory asked.

"Spending biotraits," Klaw said.

"Together?"

"Clearly," Zuss said.

"Why?"

"Because… we're a team?" Anath said.

"Oh, I guess that makes sense," Ivory said.

"Is there a problem?" Daggat asked.

"No, it's just… not very common. Folk tend to keep their upgrades close to their chest."

"Well, we don't hide anything from each other. And we help each other make decisions too." Hunter said.

"Just… hope none of you ever turn on each other, is all I'm saying. I'll leave you to it."

Daggat's eye twitched. She didn't understand what makes a party truly great. Her loss.
