Goblin Teeth: A Monster Party LitRPG

105 - Daggat: Bombshells

That night, Daggat and the crew slept like the dead. Each desperately needed rest and healing. That was until Daggat was woken by a tremendous itch in his arm. He couldn't help but scratch at it but stopped once he felt dead skin peeling away. It was best to let it heal naturally. At least his migraine was gone.

The wounded were resting on blankets and pillows, or just the bare floor. Anywhere in range of the hearth. The people here were, relatively, weak. Less than level 10, if Daggat had to guess. More than that, they weren't fighters. Hell, most of them were children. Too young to have the tattoo.

He wondered how the tattoos worked. It was possible, likely even, that Mary had the power to control people before turning into a monster. Was it a class thing? If so, it was incredibly powerful. Eh, he'd figure it out, surely.

In times like these, Daggat would work on his alchemy. He had plenty of juicy alchemical ingredients to work with now. And if he could convince Klaw and Anath to cooperate, a nearly endless supply of drakeheart potions. But, alchemy was dangerous and he didn't want to worry anyone. He was only here for the protection of the walls, but it was still wise to not rock the boat.

Instead, he wandered. Looked around the house. Clearly dwarven, as that was who lived here, but also similar to his own, larger house. Was Titanfell built by dwarves? If so, they had a way with wood. Somehow, he would need to earn the trust of Ketil.

Daggat gave friendly hellos and smiles to the humans who were up and watching from the windows. They did not return smiles. Instead, they had eyes as dead as Daggat's and pale faces. The controlled were still out there. Waiting.

Eventually, he heard metal clanging on metal and followed it. It led him to a large, well-equipped workshop. Bits of metal in all shapes and sizes, and levels of danger, hung from the walls and covered the work spaces. Bags of materials and powders were stacked neatly in respective areas. He spied a well-used notebook on one shelf.

In the middle of it all was Ketil, hammering away at a small piece of metal next to a small forge.

"Nice workshop. Whatcha working on?" Daggat said.

The dwarf didn't stop working, instead, he simply turned his head towards Daggat, "I am preparing for the goblins. Traps."

He then picked up the metal with his bare hands and placed it back into the forge.

"Heat resistance? That a dwarf thing or a you thing?"

"Dwarves are resistant to temperature. Our bones are also reinforced. What do you want?"

"Thought maybe I could help you out." Daggat idly fiddled with a metal ball lying in a box.

Ketil grabbed his arm and pulled it back, "Don't touch that."

"Why not?"

"It's a bomb. You will set it off."

"Reaaallly? You know how to make bombs?"

"Yes."

"Can you teach me?"

"No."

"Aw, come on. What's the worst that can happen?"

"You would hurt yourself… and others. I saw you burn an arrow with your fingers. One misstep, and boom."

"Well, if you show me how to make it, I can offer you some wonderful trap materials."

Ketil turned to face him. "Show me what you have, then I'll think about it."

Daggat pulled out the bag of death-infused bones and dropped it on the table. Ketil looked at it skeptically.

"You shouldn't touch it with your flesh," Daggat said as Ketil reached for it.

Ketil used a pair of tongs to open the bag, "Bones?" He looked at Daggat with a suspicious glare, "Where did you get these?"

"Found them. They are infused with death itself. Rots away the flesh on contact."

"You've defiled the dead. Robbed the graves and disrespected these people's ancestors."

"Oh, please. The other goblins ATE the bones. They can't get any more defiled. Think practically. Imagine if you stuff these in a bomb! Shrapnels of flesh rotting bone spread wide."

"It would be effective, yes. Yet, it is still wrong to use the dead."

"Why?"

"It disrespects them."

"How's that? They've reincarnated by now. If they cared so much for their old corpse, they could have tracked it down."

He gave Daggat a pointed look. "Why are you bothering me?"

"Look, I wanted to apologize on my companion's behalf. Shit went sideways real fast. We didn't really understand what was going on. Just reacted to the attack."

"I find it hard to believe you managed to beat them without an ambush."

"Did you see them? Elyndris lost a wing. It wasn't an easy thing."

"Where were you? You seem fine. Mostly."

"I was inside a tree nursing a concussion."

A notification suddenly popped into his view.

Klaw: <Hey>

"One moment," Daggat told Ketil.

Daggat: <What?>

Klaw: <So. This human is trying to kill me. I can totally kill her first, the oath is okay with it, but I thought I would run it by you.>

Daggat: <Where are you?!>

Klaw: <Upstairs. She's getting annoying.>

"One of your people is trying to kill one of mine upstairs," Daggat said.

Ketil slammed the hammer onto the anvil. "God's be damned. Come on."

The dwarf stomped out of the workshop, leaving Daggat to follow him. He cackled to himself and dashed around the room. He copied the notebook and tossed a few bags into the party loot, as well as a bomb. Then, he scampered after Ketil.

He found Klaw upstairs standing quietly at the end of the hall. He had a serious look on his face.

Ketil was talking to an enraged Pat. Tears had stained her face.

"What happened?" Daggat asked.

Klaw shrugged, "I wanted a pillow. Pat asked if I killed Leofric. Then she went berserk on me. She's weak."

"Klaw, you can't just tell people you killed their husband. You need to be more subtle."

"I'm not good at subtle. That's your thing." He made a thoughtful face, "Actually, you're not good at it either."

"Do you see ANY remorse in the eyes of that monster? And they have a feral ogre with them." Pat's voice was hoarse, "I want them gone."

Ketil had his arms on her shoulders, calming her. He turned and looked at the two goblinoids.

"Hey, I'm all in favor of getting out of this mud-hole, but I would think twice about tossing us out." Daggat said, "Kick us out and we just move on. We can hide. Ketil, you've got the hag and a goblin army by yourself, right?"

"Pat. He's right. Once we're in the clear, they're out. Just stay strong." He turned towards Daggat, "Goblin. Let's keep the peace. Keep your folk clear of the humans. We don't want anyone starting anything."

"Yeah, fine. Whatever." Daggat gave a short sarcastic bow, "We'll get you out of this mess AND leave you alone."

A short time later, the crew had all awakened and gathered in a spare room. They spent some time sharing everything that had happened to them. Boasting accomplishments and showing of new powers. Hunter still had yet to test his spell, and he had three biotrait points. Daggat had two, but he was saving them for the next biotrait he planned to use the altar on.

Anath was preoccupied with marveling at the bag of larvae, playing with them while Elyndris scoffed at their inferiority.

Hunter, likewise, was planning to use all of his biotraits on the altar.

Then they planned what they were going to do when Willow and the others showed up.

With that out of the way, he had a few tasks to take care of.

First, he tracked Oswine down. The man was watching out a window with the others.

"Hey, Oswine. I've a few questions."

Oswine looked startled to see him, then relaxed. "What can I do for you."

Daggat summoned the inkbeast scroll, "What's this?"

He took the scroll and inspected it, "It's a monster. Imprisoned in the scroll."

"I get that. But what's in it?"

"Some sort of serpent. It is… powerful. Stronger than I can control."

"You can control these things?" Daggat took back the scroll.

"Somewhat. If they are weak enough, I can give them an order they cannot refuse."

"And when it is done?"

"The monster is free. Though, I also inscribe a death mark on them. Once the task is done, the beast is killed."

"And you can't do that with this? Why would someone imprison it in the first place?"

"Some creatures are too vile to be allowed to be reborn. Somewhere in the world is the Dungeon Archive, where creatures such as this are kept."

"How does one trap a beast in a scroll?"

"It is a skill. However, in some cases, it is easier to simply kill the beast. The process is long and can make one vulnerable. Leofric would bring a monster to near death, then I would use the skill on them."

"Fascinating. So, how's morale?"

"What?"

"Like, the people. How are they feeling?"

"I know what you meant but… just look around. These people are broken."

"So. No good in a fight, then?"

"The fighting men are controlled. These people are farmers and herders."

Daggat tsked. "Well, alright. See ya." He turned to leave.

"What are planning to do… when this is all over?"

Daggat didn't slow, "I'm getting out of here."

Leaving a flabbergasted Oswine behind, he sought out Pote. He found the dwarf eating a porridge in the kitchen.

"Hey, buddy," Daggat said, sitting across from him.

"Oh. Hello."

"How are you holding up?"

"I'm fine."

"Even though Lisa is dead?"

"Well, I am sad. But, she's going on to fight the gods. So, it's okay."

"Wait… gods? What are you talking about?"

"It is a thing dwarves know. When we slew the gods who oppressed us, they remained in the land of the dead. So, warriors who die are sent to battle in an endless war against them. To stop their return."

Daggat allowed the lore to wash over him. "Do you have any… written material about this?"

"Oh, he wrote about it extensively in his tome." The assistant said.

"I can get you something. Though, we'd have to go to Varholm to get a proper record."

"That's… the dwarven city. Right?"

"Yeah."

"How we gonna do that, then?"

"Well, we'd have to take a trip. So it might be a while. It is far, beyond the water."

"No, no. I mean… do you plan to sift through the ashes? The city is gone." Daggat turned to the assistant, "right?" He didn't bother to hide talking to it.

"As Elyndris has told us." It said.

"What do you mean, gone?"

"When was the last you've received news from out here?"

"Three years, or so."

Daggat thought for a moment. Elyndris, the worm, was about six months or so old. Which meant Elyndris, the dragon, was slain a bit before then. So… what, a year ago?

"Oh. Well. Your city is dead. About a year ago."

"What? How do you know?"

"Don't underestimate what I know. It's more than people think."

"How?"

"I'll tell you… after we're safe." Daggat wasn't sure it would help to turn him against his larva mage. Not yet.

Pote had a distant look on his face. He likely didn't believe Daggat. But, he didn't really care.

"Hey, Pote. Focus. Tell me, how does your… speech thing work?"

"The tales? I speak them, and any allies who hear them receive benefits depending on the story. A few times per day, at least, and as long as the story lasts."

"Interesting. Say, do dwarves pray to the angels?"

"We honor our ancestors."

"So you haven't prayed to, say, Sahrzuel at all?"

"He who calls beasts. No. I know the people here do. Why?"

Daggat grinned. "I have an idea that would help us BOTH out in the coming days. Repeat after me…"
