Goblin Teeth: A Monster Party LitRPG

102 - Daggat: Ink Beasts

Daggat: <Hey, so I'm fine. Where are you guys?>

Zuss: <Where did you go? What's happening?>

Anath: <He's with us.>

Hunter: <How? You're far away.>

Daggat: <Uh… hard to explain. Might be a demon, or a STUPIDLY powerful monster, or maybe something else. But I think I traveled… through the trees? Look, I'll explain later. Where are you two?>

Zuss: <So, some stuff happened.>

THE MIGHTIEST LARVA: <Did you murder another human?>

Zuss: <it's not murder if they attack first. And he might not be dead.>

Hunter: <We are in a big house. It's west of the village, down a trail. There's a lot of people here, and it's trapped. See you soon.>

Klaw: <What house? That doesn't tell us much.>

Daggat and the others were hiking back in the direction of the village, weary of any mind-controlled humans. Spider skittered alongside Anath, even though she couldn't see it. Daggat's assistant floated near him. After a time, Hunter replied.

Hunter: <Dwarves.>

Anath: <What?>

Hunter: <That is whose house we are at.>

Daggat read the messages and kept his second sight open for any dangers. He was going to have to work with Hunter on his group messaging skills.

"Let's head towards the village, then search around for a big house. We should push through the night." Daggat was rested, to an extent, but his companions had been fighting and scrounging for hours. They looked exhausted. By now, it was fully night. Anath nibbled on what Hunter had eloquently called "orc balls". Her willingness to eat sapient flesh was probably a good sign. A solid step toward monsterhood.

Most of the hike was spent marveling at Daggat's new world. Essence and auras, the very magical or spiritual essence of everything, painted the world in color. Motes of plant, life, and earth essence danced around the trees and ferns. Daggat himself was wreathed in an orange haze. Essence seeped into Klaw and Anath, soaked up by their cores.

Most of the essence was weak, not enough to do anything with alchemically. He was sure if he put his mind to it, however, he could find something easily. Something to do when they were safer.

He noted something interesting about his spear and ring. They, too, drew in essence around them. Subtly changing it to match whatever effects the items had. The two items were similar in that sense. Both seemed solid, unmoving. Inevitable. The same color as Anath's strength essence, but a different… feel to it. He still hadn't discovered what his ring did.

"Hey, Elyndris. What do you make of this ring?"

"I sense strength… but not like Anath's."

"I got that, but I can't figure out what it DOES."

"There seems to be some plant. Like those of the older trees. Wood, I think? Maybe it applies its effects to wood?"

"Spears made of wood. It doesn't do anything."

"Maybe it's because your spear is magic?" Anath added.

Daggat grunted, then picked up a stick as they walked. Nothing happened. He swung it as they walked, frowning. Then, as one does with a stick, smacked it against a tree.

Stinging shock ran up his arm, as though he had smacked the tree with a bar of metal. The stick didn't bend.

"What the hell?" He said, then he tried to bend or break the thin stick, something that should be easy. It didn't budge. "Figured out what the ring does."

"What, makes you weak?" Klaw asked.

"Here, try." Daggat took off the ring and tossed it to Klaw, who had to slip it over his smallest finger.

He smacked the tree with the stick and had a similar result. He frowned at it, then grabbed it in both hands. Klaw's arms shook with effort, then the stick bent and snapped.

"Nah, ring made you weak- oh…" Klaw stumbled forward. Anath dashed forward and caught him.

"Woah, Klaw, you alright?" Daggat asked.

"Yeah… just. I pushed it too much. I think my heart is bruised, or something. It's weak. Hard to control."

Daggat tried to wrap his mind around controlling his heart. What a strange ability. "Well, let's take it easy on the way back. Hold in there."

Daggat took back the ring. It made wood strong. Daggat had a few ideas on that. He could reinforce a door just by touching it. And his spear was likely affected, but he didn't notice because it was already sturdy. With the ring, it was nearly unbreakable.

A short time later, Daggat spotted movement. A dark cloud in his second sight. Like a living shadow, settling in behind some ferns. Daggat held up a hand, and the party stopped.

"See that?" Daggat asked.

"I do, what is it?" Elyndris said.

After a moment, it settled into a shape. Four legs… dog shaped. With sudden recognition, Daggat hefted his spear and then used a lunge. The weapon seemed to pull Daggat along, then pierced the still-forming warg. It let out a bark of pain as the weapon buried itself into the warg's chest, killing it. The notification told him it was a level six warg.

Anath and Klaw stumbled back, taking defensive stances.

"Wargs," Daggat grumbled. He scanned the forest looking for more. They traveled in packs, usually. But, he saw none.

"Oswine summons wargs," Klaw said. "He wasn't among the dead."

Was this another attack from the humans? Oswine didn't have one of the tattoos, so he shouldn't be controlled. Though, Daggat didn't blame him for attacking.

"Oswine," Daggat boomed out with a sing-song tone, "Hey buddy, we're not going to hurt you."

There was no response. But, after a moment, movement.

Daggat sensed it before he saw it, "Heads up!"

A monster burst into the clearing. A stag with longer, softer fur and a fleshless skull for a head. Its teeth were carnivorous and dripping with ink. The antlers were black vitaferrum, and in place of hooves, it had large, three-fingered hands. Each finger ended with a tiny hoof. It reminded Daggat of the description of the altar beast Zuss gave him. On its forehead were several symbols drawn in ink.

Daggat rolled out of its way as it crashed into the party. Klaw lashed out at it as he avoided it, cutting a gash in its hide. Elyndris dove for it, only for her one wing to throw off her pounce. She fell to the ground, where the beast didn't even notice her. She seemed to have forgotten about her injury. Anath wasn't as quick on the attack, but she did stumble away from its initial charge.

"Really? Can we not rest for a MOMENT." Klaw growled.

Daggat watched the creature run a wide circle around the group, preparing for another charge.

"Lookout!" Anath cried, and then she shoved Daggat to the side.

A warg pounced on her. It would have bitten Daggat's head clean off. Instead, Anath caught it with three of her spider legs and held its jaws at bay with two human, or rather, arachne arms. She used the other two to gut the monster with her sword, killing it.

"Another!" Elyndris cried from the ground. A third warg sprinted at them, its eyes focused on Daggat.

He noticed the stag creature attempting to run down Klaw, who seemed like he was about to collapse. Daggat made a split-second decision.

"Hey, Klaw. Swap me monsters?" he asked with a grin, then presented his throat to the oncoming warg. Daggat couldn't help but cackle from the thrill of it.

Klaw appeared at his side with a flash of light. The warg's jaws closed over his forearm. Then spectral spines appeared around Klaw and stabbed into the beast. His counter-attack was influenced by his beast core. "You moron!" Klaw spat at him.

At the same moment, Daggat lunged with his spear. Not aiming for the beast directly but in its blind spot directly in front of its legs. He locked the spear in place just before the creature ran into it.

It screamed in pain as it tripped on the immovable spear. It rolled forward, then crashed into a tree, which shook under its force. Daggat took the opportunity to pick up Elyndris and place her on his shoulder. She hissed in anger at the beast.

Klaw ripped and tore at the wounded warg until it died. In the meantime, Daggat quickly withdrew a potion from the shared inventory. He tossed it in the air as the stag beast stood, one of its legs broken, and Daggat stabbed the glass bottle. Poison covered the blade and dripped down the shaft.

"I call dibs on this monster, you three have had enough fun already." Then he squared off against his foe, which huffed in pain and anger.

"Another!" Elyndris cried, and then Daggat felt his core drain as she unleashed a beam of energy at it. The force stopped the warg in its tracks and the heat burned away at half its body. It dropped to the ground, panting and whining. "Never mind, I got it."

Mana flooded towards the beast as it activated some ability. Not on Daggat's watch. He lunged forward with his spear, speeding towards the creature just as it opened its jaws and roared. If he didn't know the ability was coming, then he couldn't have reacted in time.

Fear pushed down on Daggat like a great, cold, weight. The beast seemed larger, grander than before. He wanted nothing more than to flee. To run and hide like a goblin should. If it wasn't for his skill pulling him along, he would have. Instead, his weapon dug into the hide of the creature, not piercing it deeply enough to kill it, but enough to administer poison.

Roots immediately sprouted from the wound, crawling and twirling around the creature. It thrashed madly and knocked Daggat away with its antlers. He lost hold of his spear as he tumbled away, but the blow didn't break anything. Elyndris screamed as she was knocked off.

As soon as Daggat had control of himself again, he crawled away from the monster. He fled, simple as that. After a dozen yards or so, he hid behind a tree. The fear was subsiding, but he still loathed to face it.

After a short time, the fear vanished entirely.

Daggat cursed at himself, then ran back to the fight. The creature was dead. Wrapped in roots that kept it upright, as though it had sprouted from the ground. An embarrassed Klaw and Anath returned a moment later, they had fled as well.

Klaw coughed, "Well. That was fun."

"Yup." Squeeked Anath.

Daggat knew that none of them would ever speak of their temporary cowardice.

"Anath, can you harvest these things real quick?" Daggat said. She nodded and began to work. It wouldn't take her much time at all, and they didn't want to pass up good loot.

Daggat bit a chunk from the stag beast.

[You have devoured - Dread Stag, level 11. Experience gained. Read lore? Yes/No]

What was that? Lore? Daggat had never seen that option before. Naturally, he selected yes.

<The Nameless Stag began as a simple animal with little ambition. By chance, it stumbled into a vile den of a long-dead demon. The horrors drove the beast to madness and rose it above its mortal kin. A deer no more, now a stag of dread. Near two hundred years later, the Nameless Stag's territory became a scar upon the world and it earned its place among the dragons. It was slain by a jealous predator and hunted for days before falling to the superior monster.>

The horrors rose it above normal animals? Did it develop some sort of dread or fear core? How?

In a short time, Anath had butchered the monsters into manageable parts. Four warg pelts, their meat, four shadow cores, the dread stags skull, and its core. All of it went into the group inventory.

The wargs each had similar symbols on their heads as the stag, leading Daggat to think they were indeed Oswine's doing. He would need to be dealt with.

It didn't take long to track the human down. He was sitting on a stone in a small clearing. One leg was bouncing nervously. He looked pale. Vomit stained his shirt and his face was puffy and wet. He had been crying.

Around him was a battlefield. Corpses of men and monsters littered the ground. Wargs and a single orc. His pony was dead as well.

Oswine nearly jumped as the party entered the clearing. Nervously, he pulled out a scroll. Klaw tensed, ready to jump but Daggat held up a hand. He wanted to see how these worked.

He painted a few symbols on the page, then ripped it. It dissolved into ink, and a hawk-like monster appeared in mid-air. It had three legs and three eyes.

"Elyndris," Daggat said.

A beam of energy smote the bird before it could do anything. The spell drained the last of his core. Oswine jumped nervously at the spell, then slumped forward.

"Just… finish me," he said, "That was my last beast."

"Why would we do that? You spend too much time with humans." Daggat chuckled.

Oswine looked at him in confusion. "Is this not your doing? Either kill me or go."

"Tell me what happened here, then we can figure out what's going on," Daggat said gently.

"They… they attacked me. People from the village. I got the message you murdered Desmond, so I was returning to the village. They met me here… and attacked. I had no choice but to defend myself. Why? Why did they attack me?"

Daggat tsked. "That's rough. So, here's the thing. Mary, you know, that old bitch that supposedly keeps the altar? Turns out she's a hag. I think she mind-controlled the villagers somehow. Something tied to the tattoos."

"A… hag?"

"Well, some monster that looks like an old hag, at least. I don't know what she actually is."

"A crone. They can appear as human." He took a deep breath, and looked up to the sky, "that would explain why she runs from me." Then he glared at Daggat, "Leofric is dead. Lisa, too."

"Same thing happened to my friends here," Daggat gestured to his party. "Their eyes glowed blue, and they attacked. Self-defense."

Oswine nodded. "And Desmond?"

"He plotted to attack us. I don't give third chances."

"So, what now? Most of the village has the tattoo."

"What do you know of a large house to the west of the village?"

"Ketil's home, and the rest of the dwarves. Ketil says the survivors are there. The same thing happened at the village."

"Your daughter?"

Oswine nodded. "She's safe."

"Then, what's the point of just sitting here?"

"The villagers… they will cut us down when we get too close."

Daggat and Klaw shared a look. Then both chortled.

"What?" Oswine asked.

"The humans? Look, you're the strongest human left. A crippled larva could kill you."

"Easily," Elyndris added.

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

"So," Daggat continued, "They won't be able to touch us. Besides, you'll bleed to death."

Oswine slowly nodded. "Alright, fine. I don't trust you, but… well. You could have killed me."

"Great, don't trust you either, friend. Let's go." Daggat said. Suddenly, he got a message.

Klaw: <This guy is going to slow us down further. Why do you want him to come?>

Daggat: <It's so Ketil doesn't shoot me on the spot. He's our hostage to get in.>

Klaw shrugged, and then the group left. Daggat daydreamed of Hunter's hearth. It had been a LONG day.

-- quick update for the stats: I've reworked how some of the stats are presented. Adding more details and clarity on where stats come from. These will be refined a bit in the coming days. There were a few errors in the stat spreads, which luckily didn't effect the story at all, and they have been fixed. --
