Mage Manual

Chapter 753: Sword Maiden's Game (Part 1)

Kingdom of Stars, Sword Flower University.

"Meeting time!"

Adelle burst through the door with a bang, triumphantly holding a folder like a hunter returning with spoils. "Ladies, come and pick out some men!"

Ingrid, who was doing sit-ups upside down on the bed, flipped onto the floor. Lois, who was reading "Water Knows the Answer," closed her book and looked at Adelle cautiously, "How accurate is it this time?"

"These are internal documents from the Truth University Strategy Group, the most accurate predictions available. Others can't even buy them if they want to. I couldn't afford it either, but under Ingrid's name, I managed to get in touch with Aisha from the Strategy Group to get this info." Adelle opened the folder and took out resumes with photos attached, "Come quick, let's sift through and find the real answer!"

"What?" Ingrid was stunned, "You used my name? How did you manage that?"

Ingrid and the genius Prophet Mage Aisha from Truth University were childhood playmates, but Ingrid had never revealed this, and they had no regular contact, only her roommates knew they were friends.

"Oh, that was a very complicated negotiation. Your sister Aisha didn't give me any special treatment just because of you. To prove we really needed this info, I ended up making up a complex story to persuade her, like me liking you, you liking her, her liking him, and so on." Adelle shrugged, "Now Aisha believes there are at least eight love arrows in our dorm."

"Honestly, I think just the love stories I told about us in the dorm were worth the price of this info. No need to praise me; for the great diplomat Adelle, this was just a minor triviality."

"Hmm, I understand." Lois said, "But if I remember correctly, Aisha is famously terrible at keeping secrets, which is evident from her giving you the info—meaning that after your efforts, Aisha's efforts, everyone at Truth University will 'know' that Ingrid and I have forbidden love for our roommate?"

"It's about us!" Adelle very loyally said, "For the greater good, I even dragged myself into it!"

"But you have a fiancé," Lois said, "Ingrid and I are still single, and after your operation, the possibilities for admirers of Ingrid and me probably will have a little change—mainly in gender."

Adelle was stunned and blinked.

She then looked down at the folder, "Ah, forget about those trivial matters, hurry and pick out some men."

The three scrutinized each resume, rejecting them one by one:

"Too old, impossible."

"Too young, impossible."

"Too good-looking, unlikely."

"Not good-looking enough, even more unlikely..."

After a dozen minutes, a classmate passing by their dorm room saw paper scattered everywhere, with three female college students lying on chairs staring at the ceiling, and curiously asked, "What are you doing?"

Adelle removed a resume from her face and said expressionlessly, "Looking for men."

The classmate glanced at the resumes with male photos on the floor, and was shocked, "You can have delivery to your door now? How much?"

Before she could suggest 'ordering one for me too,' Lois went over and closed the door, then looked back at the other two, "Do you have any preferred choices?"

"No." "No." The roommates answered in unison.

"But if this info truly came from the Strategy Group, then the right answer must be in there. We all feel there's no correct answer in here, which leaves two possibilities—"

Lois raised two fingers, "Either we're mistaken."

"Or Sonia's boyfriend is a figment of her imagination and doesn't exist at all."

Yes, the document Adelle extracted from the Truth University Strategy Group is titled "List of Candidate Boyfriends for Sonia Servi."

The question of who Sonia's boyfriend is has garnered almost as much attention as why Sonia's rank advancement is so rapid.

Some mages believe these two issues are actually one: discovering who the Claw Sword Saint's boyfriend is would unravel her upgrade mystery, but more members of the Claw Club (regardless of gender) are simply eager to take his place.

It's fortunate that Sonia has no ambition to climb the noble hierarchy, which prevents her from entering the entertainment industry, so she can't take the idol route and must pursue the professional paths of a Shadow Actress and Songstress. The news of her having a boyfriend does not affect her career.

If Dedarose were rumored to have a boyfriend... no, even a mere scandal would shake half of Dazzling Star's males.

However, compared to Sonia's hidden secret of fast rank advances, finding her boyfriend is much easier. There are only so many eligible men in Jiale City; even exhaustively listing all names should eventually yield the answer, especially with the Prophet Mages from Truth University.

Yet, even Lois and the others think 'that man' isn't on the list, indicating that the Strategy Group's undertaking has been a futile endeavor. Although Sonia rarely speaks, observing her subtle actions can often reveal the phantom image in her mind.

First of all, the gender is definitely male, and he's only slightly taller than Sonia; she doesn't need to stand on tiptoe to kiss him, and highly likely, he's a Sword Master... Even Lois could deduce these details, so Aisha and other Prophet Mages would only find more characteristics.

Honestly, no matter how strict the criteria, someone meeting them must exist in Jiale City. But there is one condition that even Lois finds baffling—Sonia is afraid of losing him.

One might think both sides in a love affair would be caught up in this emotional fluctuation, but it's different when it's someone like Sonia who's a Holy Sanctuary Mage!

Even if she can't just take a citizen for herself, being a Holy Sanctuary Mage should grant the confidence that the other party would never want to leave, or even stir a desire for control seems natural. Yet, Sonia is anxious and loses herself in thinking, like a naive girl counting petals, wondering how much he loves her.

This cannot be attributed to any personality flaw of Sonia; absolute power brings absolute confidence, and the security of the Holy Domain dispels childhood fears.

In fact, whether it's Lois's half-baked mental knowledge or a professional Spirit Mage, they all agree that Sonia is an individual with a very dominant control desire in relationships. If she has the chance, she will seize the initiative, and never let the partner lead.

For example, Sonia is willing to let go of a high-ranking noble title and career growth just to maintain her freedom as a Sword Knight. Although a part of it is to protect her own secrets, through prophecy vents and mental profile, the Strategy Group can readily determine that her 'freedom status' is crucial to her love life.

She's sacrificing not for herself, but for her lover.
