Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 309: The Mastermind Behind the Scenes_2

Jenny shook her head and let out a light sigh, "The threshold for becoming a lawyer is too high, it's too difficult for a child from an ordinary family."

"Come on, don't talk about yourself as if you're that pitiable. I think you're doing pretty well right now. A dashing female cop isn't any less than a lawyer."

Jenny said, "You're right, except for being too busy to date, everything else is indeed not bad."

Jackson joked, "You wouldn't have time to date even if you were a lawyer, that's just fate."

"To hell with destiny, I just want to have a proper relationship right now."

As Jackson drove, he laughed and said, "Do you want me to set you up with a boyfriend?"

"Aren't you single too? Wait until you're not single anymore, then that sentence will be more persuasive..." Jenny had started saying, before quickly changing the subject, "The lawyer and his colleagues have separated, don't follow too closely."

"Don't worry, I ranked first in my tracking training assessment."

Jenny said, "This isn't a training exercise, keep reducing the speed."

"We are already far enough."

Jenny pointed ahead, "Didn't you notice? His car is getting more and more off course, and there are fewer and fewer cars around.

If we follow like we did before, we'll stand out too much."

"But if we are any farther, I won't be able to see his car."

Jenny took out a pair of binoculars, "That's why I am here, you drive, I'll navigate."

The two of them followed the lawyer's car.

After driving for about ten minutes, the lawyer's car arrived at Mount Carmi, which wasn't very high and had two ring roads built around it.

The black Mercedes slowed down as it reached midway up the mountain, turned right, and stopped at a clearing by the roadside.

Jackson also spotted the black Mercedes, "The lawyer has parked, is he planning to meet the mastermind here?"

Jenny reminded, "Don't stop, just drive past."

The gray BMW continued forward, and about a mile along the mountain road, it too stopped at a clearing on the mountainside.

From here, since it was a ring road, the direct distance wasn't so far.

Jenny got out of the car, climbed a short pine nearby, and took out the binoculars to watch the lawyer's direction.

From this higher terrain, she could clearly see the clearing where the lawyer was. The lawyer got out of his car, lit a cigarette, and stood by his car silently smoking, his gaze seemingly admiring the scenery mid-mountain.

About ten minutes later, a gray Volvo approached from another direction, slowed down, and also stopped at the clearing.

The lawyer turned his head to glance at the gray Volvo, stubbed out his cigarette, opened the Volvo's passenger side door, and sat down inside.

Suddenly, the Volvo's headlights were turned off.

Jenny continued to surveil with her binoculars, but due to the dark, she couldn't see clearly inside the car or make out the license plate.

The night was very quiet, so quiet that the sound of wind rustling the leaves could be heard.

About fifteen minutes later, the passenger door opened, and the lawyer got out, entered the Mercedes driver's seat, turned on the headlights, and the car left the clearing.

Jenny remained motionless, hiding in the tree with the binoculars.

After a while, the gray Volvo also started up and drove off in the opposite direction.

Jenny then climbed down from the tree and returned to the BMW's driver's seat, "Jackson, follow that gray Volvo."

Based on the earlier assumptions, the mastermind behind the case was likely in that gray Volvo.

As Jackson started the car, he said, "I've reported to the captain, and Captain and Marcus will support us at the foot of the mountain."

"Good, I thought the captain had forgotten about us two."

Jackson chuckled, "I think the captain believes in our capabilities."

"You're right; compared to other teams, we two are more reliable." Jenny agreed wholeheartedly and bumped fists with Jackson.

Jackson drove to the foot of the mountain to avoid being noticed by the suspect vehicle, and Luke and Smalls followed in a black sedan.

The gray Volvo wasn't driving very fast, it drove for about ten minutes and then stopped by the roadside.

A person with a gray baseball cap and a slim build got out of the driver's side.

Because of the distance and darkness, the binoculars couldn't make out the person's face, but Luke felt like it was a woman.

The woman quickly walked to the junction ahead, waved, and hailed a taxi.

"Marcus drive, the suspect has gotten into a taxi."

Smalls started the car and said, "These folks are really cautious, going around in circles and now changing cars. Whether or not it's related to the North Hollywood robbery and kidnapping case, they're definitely up to no good."

Although Smalls was slick and somewhat unreliable, his driving skills were fairly good; he kept a good distance and followed the taxi, "Why do I feel more and more familiar as we drive, like we've been around here before."

"That's right, just ahead is Muriel Balldini's neighborhood."

"What? Muriel Balldini? Isn't she a victim kidnapped by Soster? Why would she secretly be in contact with the kidnapper's lawyer?

Did she bribe the robber's lawyer, aiming to take down the robbers?" Smalls wildly speculated but then dismissed his own idea,

"Impossible, we just caught the robbers; how could she know that the person is the robber's lawyer?

If she were that capable, she wouldn't have gotten kidnapped."

As they talked, the taxi indeed arrived at Muriel Balldini's neighborhood, stopping near her house.

The woman with the gray baseball cap got out of the taxi, looked around, and quickly entered Muriel Balldini's house.
