Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 308 Mistake

Interrogation room.

Luke sighed, "Soster, if you don't confess now, I can't help you anymore."

Soster took a deep breath, "Please don't hand me over to the FBI."

"As long as you cooperate with the police, the FBI has no reason to take you away."

"Thank you." Soster said, his expression changing as he sneered,

"Come on, good cop, bad cop, do you think I'm a rookie?

You still want me to be grateful to the police? That trick is outdated."

"You don't have to be grateful to anyone, but you have to be accountable for what you have done. You orchestrated your men to kill an FBI agent, and they will investigate you thoroughly.

FBI offices are spread across the entire United States; your past life experiences will all be dug up, along with the people you care about, those who care about you, and those you have hurt—all of it will be laid out on an FBI desk.

They will also pick some things you truly care about to place on the interrogation table..."

Luke didn't go into too much detail; he believed Soster should understand.

Very few people in the world can truly live without desires or attachments.

As long as you still care about something, you need to make compromises accordingly.

Don't place the things you care about on someone else's bottom line.

Soster was also a sensible person; he knew he didn't have many choices. No matter if Luke was acting, choosing to cooperate with the police was indeed more suitable than dealing with the FBI.

"I admit to participating in the North Hollywood Bank robbery and kidnapping Muriel Baldini, but I was not the mastermind; Marbury Karl was.

As for Marbury Karl installing a bomb at Jerrang Kazafei's home, I had no knowledge of it, and the death of the FBI agent has nothing to do with me."

"You really cleared yourself quite neatly, but your accomplices Andres Towns and Jerrang Kazafei both identified you as the mastermind."

"They were deceived; Marbury Karl is the mastermind, and everything was orchestrated by him. I was just the scapegoat pushed to the front."

"Blaming a dead person, your tactic is very cliché. Do you think we would believe that?"

"What I've said is the truth. I've admitted to the crimes I committed. Whether you believe it or not is up to you.

I'm willing to assist the police in their investigations, but you can't make me confess to what I didn't do."

Soster leaned forward, "Captain Lee, consider this, I can sign a plea deal anytime."

Luke understood the subtext in Soster's words; he was minimizing his role, not admitting to orchestrating the killing of the FBI agent, not admitting to being the mastermind, only admitting to being an accomplice in two cases.

If the police agreed to his story, he would sign the appropriate plea agreement, and the case would be closed to everyone's satisfaction.

If the police disagreed, then it would go to court.

This was passing the buck back to Luke.

"Do you think the FBI would agree to this plea agreement?"

"What I've said is the truth."

Luke stood up, "Then there's nothing more to discuss."

"OK, I want to see a lawyer."

...

Robbery and Murder Department, Squad One office.

No sooner had Luke returned to the office than Anthony said with a laugh, "Luke, it seems that guy isn't very willing to cooperate with the police. Hand him over to me.

The FBI has ways to get him to confess clearly."

Luke retorted, "How exactly would you interrogate him? Let's hear it."

"Uh..." Anthony spread his hands; he knew Luke knew that some things couldn't be said too clearly, deliberately waiting for him,

"Just like you told that robber, our FBI's network spans the entire United States; we can examine his past thoroughly and find more evidence to make him confess."

"Have you found any?"

"It'll take a bit more time."

"Then go find it. If the FBI is confident of making him confess, I could consider handing him over to the FBI."

"Then why not now? Maybe if he steps into FBI territory, he will cave."

Luke didn't respond directly, looking towards Vincent, "Deputy, what do you think?"

"Anthony, we caught the robber, and you expect us to hand him over just because you said so? Forget it." The deputy wasn't about to pamper him.

"OK, I'll go find new evidence; I'll definitely find some."

Luke smiled, "Go ahead and be thorough. Soster isn't going anywhere in police custody."

"Why does it feel like I'm working for you guys?" Anthony shook his head as he left the office.

Jackson asked, "Captain, if Anthony really finds evidence that the robber will confess, will you really hand over the suspect to the FBI?"

"Of course."

Jack said, "We caught the guy, and yet we have to hand him over to them for interrogation; isn't that too frustrating?"

"I don't want that scenario either, but we shouldn't let a criminal escape justice just to satisfy our pride." Luke tapped on the table,

"Guys, what we need to do now is find stronger evidence. As long as we can make Soster confess, the FBI won't have any role to play.

Get moving; recheck all the clues, evidence, and dubious points of the two cases."

"Yes, sir."

Motivated by Luke's words, everyone was fired up, holding their breath with determination.

Sometimes, people really do need some positive competition in their work.

Of course, people are different.

This talk didn't have much effect on Marcus, though; half an hour later, Luke saw him slacking off again.

Since Luke himself was the king of slacking off, he didn't feel right calling him out on it.
