Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 529: Courting Disaster (Part 2)

The immense treasure is a huge test of human nature. The more people there are, the more complicated things will become, and the more variables there will be.

Lilith softly agreed, "You're right. Let's do it that way."

Luke asked, "Why do I feel like you all are a bit nervous?"

Lilith replied, "Maybe we're scared by the bandits."

Luke's lips curled into a smile, "With me around, what do you have to fear?"

Lilith forced a smile, "You're right, with you here, I feel much more at ease. What should we do now?"

Luke said, "First, take pictures, then move the bodies onto the island. In this hot and humid climate, these bodies will start to rot by tomorrow, and the yacht will be unbearable to stay on."

Lilith and the girl with glasses were somewhat uncomfortable with the bodies of the bandits, but neither objected, and they assisted Luke in disposing of the corpses, cleaning the yacht's deck.

Once they finished tidying up, night had already fallen.

In this tropical rainforest climate, one sweats even when doing nothing. After a busy day, Luke was drenched in sweat, "I'm going to take a shower, you keep an eye out."

After watching Luke leave, Lilith and the girl with glasses exchanged a glance and both let out a breath of relief.

...

An hour later, a tall, rugged-faced man emerged from a cabin, changed into clean shorts and beach pants, exuding a vacation vibe.

Only the handgun he carried with him disrupted this harmonious image.

Luke lit a cigarette, standing on the yacht's deck smoking. The sky had darkened, and the southern island seemed shrouded in a veil of darkness, adding a layer of mystery. Occasionally, the roar of a beast could be heard, mingling with the sound of waves, indistinguishable as to what animal it was.

The wheelhouse was lit, and Luke pushed the door open to enter, seeing the girl with glasses bending over the table, busy with her head down.

"What are you doing?"

"Ah..."

The girl with glasses was startled, turned her head to look at Luke, her gaze falling on the handgun at his waist. She stood up with a start, "I'm fixing the satellite phone." The girl with glasses waved her hand, "I'm not trying to call the police, I just want to share the joy of acquiring the treasure with my family."

Luke found a chair and sat down, waving his hand, "Go take a shower, relax, don't put too much pressure on yourself, it's all in the past now."

"Okay." The girl with glasses quickly stood up, holding the satellite phone parts, and walked briskly to the door of the wheelhouse, as if afraid Luke would change his mind.

Luke frowned slightly, "Where's Lilith?"

...

The yacht's master bedroom, inside the bathroom.

Lilith appeared languid, lying in the bathtub, but her pretty face showed some unease, a layer of white foam floated on the surface of the tub, her graceful figure partly hidden, partly visible.

Elsa Marin's betrayal was hard for her to accept; she had already given Elsa Marin an extraordinarily generous reward, yet she still conspired with outsiders to trick her, wanting not just the treasure but her life as well.

At the same time, she felt an unprecedented panic and fear. She touched her heaving chest, obviously sensing her heartbeat was faster than usual.

Her fear was complex, starting with being held hostage by Elsa Marin and the tattooed man, then Luke killing three people with a shotgun, saving her and the girl with glasses.

In that moment, she was filled with gratitude towards Luke, but a new fear emerged as well.

First was the scene of murder, seeing the man named Cam getting shot in the head directly. That brutal scene still frightened her when she recalled it, followed by the tattooed man and Elsa Marin being shot dead, all with a single shot.

At that time, she vaguely worried that Luke might kill her and the girl with glasses as well.

She knew she shouldn't doubt her companions, especially since the other party had just saved her.

But with the maritime satellite phone being damaged, this fear intensified further, they couldn't contact the outside world, and outsiders didn't know what was happening here.

As long as Luke wished... all the treasure could belong to him alone.

Rationality told her that Luke was trustworthy, that he wouldn't kill for money.

But Elsa Marin's betrayal was right in front of her...

The thoughts were conflicting but not contradictory.

Like in a Marvel movie, when a villain wants to destroy the Earth, superheroes will unhesitatingly protect it, and people will be full of gratitude towards them.

However, when the villain disappears,

the superhero might become a new threat, the lives they, intentionally or unintentionally, harm are no fewer than those harmed by villains.

When people face a superhero who can decide their life or death in a split second, the first reaction is not safety or admiration, but fear, a fear stemming from biological instinct.

Lilith lay in the bathtub, trying to relax as much as possible, contemplating the current situation.

With the maritime satellite phone broken, and stranded near an uninhabited island, they were virtually isolated from the world, with the yacht carrying over ten million US Dollars' worth of treasure.

Faced with massive interests, human nature will gradually be exposed.

Luke was able to kill Elsa Marin and her accomplices without batting an eye, and he could just as easily kill her and the girl with glasses, the two of them together wouldn't even have the ability to resist.

The entire situation on the yacht was completely under Luke's control.

She considered, putting herself in Luke's position, what would she do?

The first possibility is that Luke has high morals, never thinking of hogging the treasure, and it's all just her overthinking.

The second possibility is that Luke is also hesitating, torn between doing it and not, which is the most likely and also the most terrifying possibility.
