Threads of the Soul

Chapter 367: Finally A Worthy Opponent!

As it turned out, Honey didn't even notice Avatar Seth's strange flight path. Not even when he looped past the same twisted and evil looking tree for the third time.

She was too invested in enjoying her latest 'discovery'. Thus for the entirety of their pointless looping trip, which only existed to keep her occupied and out of trouble, Honey decided to torture- I mean pleasantly regale Seth with tales of all of her victories.

She enjoyed the feeling of worship, of getting the chance to beguile her supremacy to someone else. After a solitary life, it was strangely enjoyable to have someone that understood how amazing she was. So she made sure he knew exactly how amazing that was, down to the detail of every single victory.

Unfortunately, either through ignorance or simple egotistical delusion, Honey took Seth's constantly uninterested 'Wow' and 'That's amazing' as genuine interest.

"-Then there was the time a Bear tried to stand tall to scare me, so naturally I bit him right in those furry nuts and-"

"I am going to have to cut you off there. I mean, as much as I am thoroughly enjoying these stories, our destination has arrived."

Honey frowned softly, glancing around at the open field they were hovering above with confusion plastered across her face. It a field they had flew over twice, not that she noticed.

"Stupid human, there is nothing here! You better not be trying to trick me, otherwise your bet will be broken and I will take your life as payment!"

Seth shook his head, which caused Honey to shake side to side as she still sat on his head like a Pompadour, before he looked upwards. Honey dug her claws in to stay in place as she was tilted backwards, her eyes widening in surprise as she finally saw the sleek black ship descending from the sky.

"What... what sort of creature is that? You think just because it flies that I cannot defeat it?"

"You are mistaken great warrior badger. That is not your opponent, that is a ship. Your opponent lies inside, ready and waiting for your arrival."

With a smirk on his face, Seth hovered upwards to meet the ship as he could already imagine the look on Nixie's face when she saw her new friend. Even if the badger didn't know that's what its fate had become.

***

"This is my opponent? But it is so... round."

Honey complained with a mixture of confusion and disappointment, while Seth simply sighed and gently face palmed.

They were currently standing in Nixie's room, while the girl in question was fast asleep. Her body strewn across the bed, sheets and pillows tossed across the room, as a miniature waterfall of drool spilled from the side of her mouth and gathered next to her head.

Seth's journal laid on the ground next to her. It was still open, with its pages flattened so that it turned into a screen and resembled a tablet, and was still playing the TV show Nixie had been watching. An anime about muscular men with colour changing hair and who could shoot beams from their hands.

One of Seth's favourites.

His disappoint didn't come from the fact she was sleeping, he found it almost adorable how much of a disaster she looked when she slept. No, his disappointment as a father came from why she was sleeping.

Alongside the journal on the floor, was a pile of countless wrappers and boxes. Half the canteen had been stuffed into the girls stomach, especially the sweet stuff, causing her to fall into a food coma with a belly that was bulging from her indulgence.

Honey jabbed Nixie's belly a few times, watching it jiggle and wobble, before looking back at Seth with utter disappointment. This was supposed to be her unbeatable opponent?

Nixie stirred slightly at the prods, but only enough to sleepily slap away Honey's paw. However that was more than enough to stir the badgers petty vengeance.

Her claws gleamed wickedly as she lifted them high, before bringing them down in a mighty slash towards that engorged stomach. The little human had a feast, so Honey wanted to taste it herself.

She would spill her guts and- Huh?

Honey blinked softly, staring at Nixie's stomach in confusion. Her claws had struck true but...where was the blood? Where was the cut? There.. there wasn't even so much as a nick!

She frowned deeply, scowling as rage filled her tiny body once more. Her claws flew into a frenzy, slashing and slicing with relentless fury, yet no matter what she did those mighty claws that had felled so many failed to even mark Nixie's delicate skin.

All she felt was a slight pressure, enough to stir her slightly once again.

Nixie peeked open her eyes, just enough to see a fluffy... something next to her. Still half asleep, she grabbed it by the scruff and dragged it into her arms, wrapping them tight around her new teddy bear as she quickly fell back to sleep.

"Unhand me! Unhand me and fight me properly! Let go of me you foul-"

Honey's protests were cut off as Nixie squeezed tighter in her sleep, hugging her new teddy tight and forcing the air from Honey's lungs. The badger wheezed as she struggled to breathe, but no matter how much she was crushed her legendary indestructibility kept her alive.

Her claws furiously racked against Nixie's arms and face, trying to free herself, but the most reaction it got from the young girl was a few giggles and mutters in her sleep as she was lost in her food coma dreams.

For twenty minutes straight, which was essentially their entire trip back to the sun, Honey fought and struggled, clawed and bit, desperately trying to escape the crushing torturous grip of Nixie's nap time snuggles, before she eventually gave up.

Although she muttered something about 'regaining her strength' while she closed her eyes and accepted her fate, not even a single minute later she was nuzzling into Nixie and snuggling her back.

The sight of the two indestructible, unstoppable agents of chaos and destruction sleeping and snuggling together so soundly and peacefully was surprisingly precious. So much so that Seth had to touch his journal with his foot, just so it would enshrine his memory of the moment within its pages.

When Honey let out a snorting snore and kicked her paw in her sleep, Seth couldn't help but smirk and chuckle softly to himself.

At least, that was what he tried to do. In reality he only managed to let out a muffled chuckle, while his smirk never got a chance to creep onto his face. He tried, but the entire left half of his face was utterly unresponsive to his orders.

If he were in his original body, his face would be slumping down as all the muscles relaxed completely, giving him the appearance of a stroke victim. But since he was controlling his Avatar, it simply turned the left half of his face back to inanimate metal, like it was supposed to be.

Before he could even worry about it, Seth stumbled as his right leg gave out. Unlike its face it kept its flexibility and animate properties, but it completely disregarded his commands and simply buckled under his weight.

He quickly limped out of the room, closing the door behind him just as his arm froze like his face. Half of his Avatars body was shutting down, but it wasn't the only one.

In the facility, his Avatar there simply froze completely. It was the one he was paying the least attention to, simply walking it around to check on things passively. But it became completely rigid and inanimate mid step, before toppling to the ground with a clattering crash.

In Ravenkeep, Lord Corvus had collapsed in the throne room. The only one around to see it was a servant who was assigned to him today. The short servant quickly ran over to help, but the Lord simply raised his hand to stop him.

Seth would have had him speak to reassure him, spinning some tale to keep his alter ego's image and mystery intact, but his mouth had completely frozen up underneath the darkness of his hood.

He had Corvus float himself over to the throne with his cloak's power, before pulling his mind away from the Avatar and handing it off to a [Spirit Animal] to keep up appearances.

[It is strongly advised that you dedicate more mental energy to your Evolution.]

"Yeah Yeah, I know..."

His Avatar on the ship muttered, his speech slurred as he talked out of only one side of his mouth. He didn't need to speak out loud, but he did it by habit. He had the Avatar hobble its way into the control room, before letting it slump into a seat near where his real body was meditating.

He let out another half muffled chuckle as he looked at his own disfigured face.

"Alright Handsome, Let's finish this shall we? If you died because you were too busy with me then... I'd have to... kill you myself."

The Avatar grew still as Seth's mind retreated, not just from it. But from every single puppet he was connected to. Everything was left up to his [Spirit Animals] as for the first time in over a year, Seth's mind was together in one place.
