Engines roared as the spaceship lurched forwards, rocketing from the place that it had rested for millions of years and finally taking to the skies once more. Unfortunately since the place it had rested all this time was underground, the skies weren't very open and it was currently rocketing towards a solid wall.
Warnings flashed across the window of the control room, helpfully pointing out the solid surface they were racing towards, just in case they had somehow missed it. Alarms blared throughout the ship and the few passengers within it screamed at the top of their lungs as they were thrown backwards from the sudden lurch in speed.
All except for the little devil in disguise, Nixie, who had started all of this
Seth's back pressed against the chair as he started at the console with a mixture of panic and horror, as he felt his hubris so swiftly come back to kick him in the nuts. His eyes darted over the console, desperately searching for any way to pilot this damn thing as they drew closer to the wall.
Unfortunately, it seemed Prometheus had forgotten to add that part to his mental upload, somehow not considering the thought that he would go full speed in a cave. Although Seth could read the buttons, it didn't mean he actually knew how to pilot the ship, especially since he didn't know what half of the buttons did.
And some of them didn't even have proper translations!
A blinking purple light grabbed Seth's attention and without hesitation, and running low on options, he slammed his hand down onto the button just as the ship was about to hit the wall.
Blinding magenta light poured through the windscreen, filling all of their visions and obscuring the sight of impending, flattened death, before it faded a second later. When the light dimmed, the view of the outside world changed.
They did not see the wall ahead of them, threatening to crush them into a fine paste, nor did they see the mangled remains of the facility that they would have crashed through. Instead they saw a seemingly infinite stretch of pure blackness, broken up by thousands of twinkling white lights.
They were looking at the beautiful tapestry of space.
Seth lifted from his seat, through no action of his own, as he drifted weightlessly above it as gravity lost all hold of them.
It was a strange sensation, to float in zero gravity when you could fly normally. However, Seth's flight was more akin to being dragged around, either by one of his weapons or his wraith cloak, so the sensation was still a spectacle to him.
But for someone like Astra or Nixie, it was nothing new. Still, they weren't going to spoil his fun.
Pushing off the chair, Seth flipped in the air a few times and pushed himself around the control room, simply enjoying the feeling of true weightlessness. While he was forced to drift and float, Nixie flew circles around him, giggling the entire time.
The sour faced, grumpy director was similarly having his own fun leaping around the room like a superhero, while Bob was less amused. The particulates of his body drifted apart, wanting to move in their own way.
It was like his version of hair sticking up from static electricity. Parts of him were constantly drifting off into little clouds and aimlessly floating tendrils, forcing Bob to drag himself back together every few seconds. It was exhausting, and irritating, like he was clenching all of the muscles in your body otherwise your nose would drift away.
{Phase Drive fuel low. Phase Drive offline. Establishing Orbital pattern with nearest planetary body. Gravity Generation set to Terran standards. Gravity Generation in 3...2...1... Generating Gravity.}
A series of announcements echoed through the ship as gravity took hold once more, letting Bob finally sigh in relief and causing Seth to fall on his back mid-flip.
Astra, who had stayed in her seat the entire time, let out a quick snort of laughter at the loud, very ungraceful thunk of Seth's rear end slamming against the floor.
"I give you a 2/10 on the landing, but a 9/10 on the entertainment value. You'd make for a great court Jester if nothing else works out."
A soft laugh escaped Seth's lips, followed by a groan as he sat up and clambered to his feet. He turned towards Astra to give a sarcastic reply of his own, but stopped when he caught sight of the view out the windscreen.
Eyes wide in awe, he couldn't help but let out a soft gasp as he slowly walked over to the window. Pressing his hand against it, Seth gazed out with eyes full of wonder as the ship turned to give a perfect view of the earth.
Nixie flew over, resting her head on his shoulder, while Astra's hand slipped into his. Bob stood beside him, his arm now fully black as the discolouration spread like an infection that he didn't care about.
Even Zero joined them for the view, but he stood apart from the family. Giving them a respectful space as he looked out on the planet he had been defending for longer than most realised.
Their facility had developed a drug, distilled from the DNA of their alien prisoner, taken from his saliva. It was research that had been in development for a long time, given the highest secrecy that only the Director himself and one other scientist knew about. Mainly due to its fatality rate.
They couldn't afford to kill most of their numbers, as it killed nearly everyone that took it. Everyone but the Director. So it was put to the side and forgotten in history. But for the Director, the lucky one who survived, it had extended his lifespan.
For over 150 years, Zero had been the Director of that facility. So long that he had forgotten any other name. He never got to see the moon landing, only hearing about it from the scientists they brought in after the fact.
"I thought it would look... different, you know? After everything that has changed, after the world seemed to end. I thought it would just look different somehow. But it doesn't. It looks exactly the same.
Like up here, none of those little squabbles even matter. I wonder if that's how he saw it. Prometheus...
I wonder if this is how he saw the world when he was dooming us to an apocalypse in an attempt to save us."
Seth's macabre words hung in the air for a few seconds as everyone digested them and silently gazed out at the peaceful earth. All of their problems, all of their lives feeling so small and useless from orbit.
Eventually Astra patted Seth's shoulder and moved away.
"Alright Chuckles, time to go home. Figure out how to fly this thing while I check out that pulse drive."
He could hear her footsteps retreating, but he kept staring at the planets peaceful surface for a few more seconds before letting out a deep sigh. By the time he pulled his eyes away, she was gone.
Glancing at Bob, Seth noticed the creeping blackness slowly consuming the dirt man.
"Everything okay Bobby?"
He nodded, "Yes. I am getting an upgrade. The little ones seemed unsatisfied with my current form, they are improving me."
Although he didn't smile, Seth could hear the excitement in his voice, as well as see the way his dirt was shuffling with joy. Bob lifted his hand, which morphed into a spike, before the black dust pulled itself together and solidified into a heavy, fully metallic sword with a razor's edge.
It shifted again, morphing into a hollow tube, as his entire arm became a gun barrel, before morphing back into his hand.
"Well... That does look like an upgrade. You deserve it buddy, you really do. Now... How about we do what her majesty says, I think little Nixie deserves to see her new home, don't you?"
He chuckled softly, plucking her out of the air and holding her in his arms as he moved back to the captain's seat. Zero smiled softly to himself, not minding that he was being ignored, again, and simply let himself be contempt with the wondrous view. It was definitely worth the wait.
Without the pressure of impending death, Seth took his time to look over the buttons and switches laid out before him. Some he still couldn't translate properly, as no translation existed, while others would take testing to figure out.
But he couldn't help but chuckle when he flipped a switch labelled 'Manual control' and a pair of joysticks built themselves out of the arms of his chair.
A pair of screens grew out of the head of the chair and hung in front of him as the chair itself leaned back, giving him a perfect view of the different parts of the ship. It was a perfect copy of some of the flight sims he used to play, something that definitely wasn't a coincidence.
Pushing forwards on the joystick, the ships engines roared to life and shot the ship forwards once more, the air burning as it plunged out of orbit and shot through the atmosphere. This time under Seth's control as he steered it homeward bound.
Out of the corner of his eye, on one of the displays, he could see the power level of the 'Phase Drive' dip from 1.32% to 0%. Perhaps it was one of Astra's requirements. He should probably help her out with hers, now that his were almost complete.
[Evolution Catalyst Requirements:-
- Lightning in a Bottle (Obtained)
- Untainted Tear (Obtained)
- Fruit from the Heavenly Tree (Obtained)
- Heart of a Dragon (Obtained)
- Soul of a God (In Progress) ]
Pulling his eyes away from the screen, Seth shook his head softly. He didn't even know what her requirements were. How she put up with such a selfish man, he had no idea. But he was definitely going to pay her back for all the help she had given him. It was the least she deserved.
After all, it's not like he didn't have the time. His final requirement just needed that. Time, as well as a little patience. But how much time could it really take to purge Prometheus' influence from his blood and develop the soul of a god?
