Threads of the Soul

Chapter 131: I've covered wars you know

Tiff's power of perception was wondrous indeed, even before this entire army, none of them bothered to look her way. Her power was actually better suited for such occasions, where attention was scattered and when you were ignoring certain things, it allowed her to become background noise all the more easily.

The problem with it, however, was that she wasn't actually invisible, instead people simply looked past her as if she was. The important difference in that seemingly semantic definition came into play when her wonderful Lord, in all of his Angelic Majesty, leapt over the approaching army like it was the most pitiful he had ever encountered.

While it wasn't something worth his effort, it was a massive obstacle for Tiff. She couldn't just push her way through as if she was invisible. Drawing attention to herself by touching, yelling or even just sprinting was enough to break the subtle spell over her.

She had to make her way around the army at a nail bitingly slow pace, recoiling in fear whenever any of them got even remotely close to her in her travels.

And when that skinless horse-man thing burst out of the gates, desperately nipping at the heels of the old swordsman! God, she nearly soiled her pants at the sight and had to cover her mouth to stop herself from screaming.

It did make her Journalistic instincts tingle, however, so she couldn't help but record the old mans dirty tactics as he led the beast through the enemy lines. Every swing of its arms in an attempt to hit him, simply carved through dozens of Hemogoblins or unfortunate enslaved beasts.

Whenever it spewed out its vile breath, which must have smelled absolutely rancid, everything that it touched withered to a dry, lifeless husk. Looking like freshly uncovered mummies that had forgotten their bandages in their tomb. Gross.

However, as amusing as it was to see this beast carve through its own side's army, Tiff had a better story to cover. She could feel it in her bones. Plus there were already half a dozen people also recording this event, even if her angle was far superior to theirs. She couldn't help just being better, after all.

But there was one thing they wouldn't be able to record, her wonderful Lord! Only she was capable of following him wherever he went, only she could be with him at all times of the day. She clung to him tighter than his own shadow, following him anywhere and everywhere.

That is why he belonged to her, and her alone. Definitely not to that sparkle fingered bitch!

Taking a deep breath, Tiff calmed her rage and buried it down deep, where it would be put to better use later. For now, it was time for another date with her Lord~ Just the two of them as he shows these beasts who's boss.

She arrived in the castle courtyard just in time to witness the arrival of the dastardly Heart-Eater and record his entire, over dramatic speech. Ugh, he was so gross about it all, although she had to admit his story about the girl he loved touched her heart.

She could relate, it was exactly how she felt about her Lord, how she loved him. But they were different, they weren't like this guy and his useless crush. She would never kill the Lord like he did with his girl, that just didn't make sense.

If you loved someone, you should do anything to be together, which meant taking out the competition if need be. If anyone he should have killed her so called 'boyfriend' and shown her why they should be together. Now that was true love, slaying the monster and rescuing your princess, just like the fairy tales~

Tiff made sure to record every second of the fight, even getting a few risky up close shots of the Lord's minions being pummelled. She did panic slightly when the blood rain descended, but it seemed to only fall on people rather than the entire area. Along with the Heart-Eater himself, she was completely ignored by the rain just like everything else ignored her.

However before she could let out a sigh of relief and thank her powers once more, she witnessed her Lord collapsing. He was wounded! She gnawed at her lip in heart wrenching dread and anxiety as she watched that beast approach her Lord, thinking that he would recover just in time.

But nothing, he dropped his sword and looked on the verge of death. She couldn't just stand by and watch her love die!

"NO! MY LORD!"

She couldn't help but scream at the top of her lungs, panic over whelming her as she saw the Heart-Eater about to finish the job, breaking the spell over her and finally revealing herself to the pair.

If this was any other situation, she would be gushing at the fact that her Lord was actually looking at her. She could just imagine the hearts in his eyes as he admired her beauty and bravery.

Puffing her chest out and stomping her delicate foot down onto the ground, Tiff stared down the horrifying creature and tried her best not to let her fear seep through as she shouted at it.

"Y-you leave him alone! Don't you dare touch my Lord again!"

"Oh now that is just precious, you need her to fight for you huh? You know, you remind me of this girl I once knew, how about your boyfriend stays here while I show you what I did with her."

A sinister smile spread across the Heart-Eaters face as he lowered himself down onto his spider legs once more and slowly approached her, half scuttling and half slithering. The end of his tail lifted before plunging itself into the ground, stabbing the bladed tip through her Lord's leg to keep him pinned in place.

As he approached, he reached out his tendriled arm, eager to wrap them around her and devour her heart, yet before those wretched blades could reach her, a blinding light emitted from behind him and cast deep shadows across her face.

The Heart-Eaters face twisted in confusion as he whirled around quickly, his face plate lowering itself instinctively as a glowing fist slammed into his side, just below his spider legs.

A blinding flash of light burst out, like they were in the centre of a nuclear explosion, before the Heart-Eater was blasted away faster than one could blink. His colossal body smashed through yet another wall, before his broken and destroyed was sent tumbling down the hill that the castle rested upon, so that he could rot at the bottom.

Tiff winced and blinked the light, which was somehow making a ringing noise inside of her head, out of her eyes until she finally had her sight back. What she saw however, made her gasp in surprise and tears well up in her eyes.

Stood before her was her Lord, her love, his left arm utterly obliterated as the tattered rags of his sleeve flapped loosely in the evening winds. His body was riddled with holes and there was a large, gnarly looking gash in his leg where he had torn it free from the Heart-Eaters blade.

Yet... the longer she looked, the more her shock began to dwindle and confusion took its place.

"T-there's no blood. W-why... why is there no blood?"

Her eyes scanned his body again, looking over the countless wounds and his ragged clothing. Come to think of it... why did he wear clothing? Every other fighter wore some kind of armour, even his little cripple squire had armour. But the lord didn't, he just wore normal, black clothing seemingly picked from a department store.

Even his wounds didn't look right. Not only was there no blood, there didn't seem to be any flesh either. There was just this... white material.

Her Lord ignored her questions, simply pushing her recording device down with his remaining hand before placing his hand on her shoulder as he tried to usher her away. She should have been filled with joy that he was touching her, not just her shoulder but her hand too.

She should have been excited and filled with overwhelming love, but instead there was confusion. Only confusion.

"It doesn't matter. Listen, you need to get out of here. I need to go down there and make sure that he stays down, we can't have any risks for this one."

He gently pushed her to the side before running over to the hole in the wall, seemingly not affected in the slightest by the giant gash in his thigh. A gash that cut apart half of his leg and should have severed his Achilles tendon and made it impossible, or at least excruciatingly painful to walk.

Yet he jogged away so casually, like it didn't matter at all. She just couldn't help but shout after him.

"I don't understand! Why don't you bleed?"

As she pleaded for answers, he slowed his jog before coming to a stop at the gap in the castle's wall. Turning slowly, he had his head lowered as he gazed back at her, seemingly contemplating if he should answer her or what he should even tell her.

When he finally decided, he raised his head and looked at her directly. But his words never reached her, as a tendril wrapped tight around his throat and lifted him into the air, another tendril coiling around his arm and holding it out, so that he couldn't move it.

As the Lord was lifted into the air, the Heart-Eater came into view behind him. His demonic wings beat rhythmically against the air, keeping his body aloft, or what was left of it. He had lost his spider legs, although there were still bones jutting out of his ribs.

His actual legs were missing too, replaced with bloody, disgusting stumps of torn and ragged flesh. Chunks of fresh meat hanging off them, swinging gently in the air from his flapping movement, like meat pendulums trying to hypnotise you.

His armour was utterly destroyed, all that were left were a few plates in random places, but all of them were covered in a plethora of cracks and fissures, like a shattered vase that was haphazardly glued back together and ready to fall apart at the slightest touch.

"What's the matter, aren't you going to answer her Bird Face? The girl is right to ask that after all, I mean I am definitely curious too. I mean..."

A pair of Knife tipped tendrils erupted from the Lord's chest, one of them even piercing through the back of his head and jutting out through the swirling darkness that was his mask's eye hole.

Tiff couldn't help but let out a shrill, shocked scream, covering her mouth as tears streamed from her eyes. Yet even with those bursting through him, all of them in places that should be piercing vital organs, her Lord still struggled against his grasp.

"...Why don't you bleed? I can control my blood flow, but you? You shouldn't even be alive right now, yet here you are. Alive, kicking and dry as a bone. So what are you?"

A curious expression spread across his face as a white circle manifested itself in the middle of his chest, like a super hero emblem. His pupils turned to slits as his irises were filled with liquid metal, and shone with a dazzling silver.

He gazed at Corvus with those silver eyes, taking in the wondrous sight. His eyes even left her Lord, darting around in the air as he grasped at the air, as if trying to catch something. But nothing was there, as far as Tiff could see.

"Ah.. So that's it. Just another little trick, you're just like the stone men. I guess I'll just have to find the real you."

Letting out a maniacal laugh, he tossed the Lord to the side like an unwanted toy, before shooting into the air with a powerful flap of his wings.

As the Lord's body clattered against the ground and rolled to a stop, Tiff cautiously approached him. He wasn't moving, simply laying there like he was dead.

She crouched down beside him, gently pulling down the hood of his cloak and inadvertedly causing the mask to dissolve into silvery wisps, revealing the featureless face of the mannequin beneath.

Yet even though there was nothing but a faceless puppet beneath the mask, a gentle smile danced across Tiff's lips. She gently caressed his cheek, leaning down so that she was looking into what would have been his eyes, feeling like she could see into his very soul.

"Don't worry my love, I understand why you did it. But now that I know your secret, there is nothing stopping us. We can be together, just the two of us. Forever. I knew you would be mine~"

She whispered softly, leaning down and placing a kiss where the lips should be.
