Koyuki, the Necromancing Foxkin

CHAPTER 237: Night

The rain continued and I was very grateful for my water shield. I did feel sorry for the soldiers but at least they had raincoats. They wore them over their chainmail. I changed between walking around the camp and sitting at the fire. We had four poles around it and a canvas to protect it from the rain. Besides the main fire there were some torches. They used alchemical fuel to work even in heavy rain.

It was important to have some light, otherwise something could sneak into the camp. They also provided some warmth but the temperature was rather mild.

I had just sat back down at the fire when I noticed a flaming arrow exploding in the sky. That was an alarm coming from the forest side!

"ALARM!" I cried as loud as I could while rushing towards the forest. The rain was very loud and we still had some thunder. It was likely the reason why they used an arrow to alert the other guards. Hopefully my shouting would wake some since I was next to the tents.

Wait, my shout was not that loud. But…

"Nyx, please roar." I told her.

Nyx looked at me, then she grew. Once she had her full size her mouth opened, and she roared. Now that should wake everyone!

I quickly continued towards the forest. Hatsumi was with me, forming blood claws to prepare for the fight. My skeletons were currently engaging something and Brie was shooting arrows towards the forest.

"Report!" I shouted as I arrived.

"Goblins." Bram answered. He had a spear and a shield, ready to engage the creatures who broke through the undead. My 20 skeletons were currently doing a good job, backed up by my magic skeleton throwing some ice shard at the attackers.

Goblins were a bit smaller than dwarves and less muscular. They were intelligent but generally unwilling to cooperate with the kingdom. And they liked to eat people. They also liked to use poison. Which was rather useless against undead.

Then I saw a lighting bolt flying towards a skeleton.

"They have a shaman!" Brie shouted.

The other members of my squad arrived and I started giving orders. "Scouts, try to get the shaman. Or anyone with ranged attacks. They likely have some archers. Fighters, be ready to intercept anyone breaking through the undead. Let them hold the line if possible. Watch for flanking attacks."

"My undead has engaged something on the other side." Hatsumi said.

"What?" I asked.

"I don't know." She replied.

"Ok, handle it. I will stay here." I ordered her. She nodded and ran.

"The other side is pretty open. Where would they be coming from?" Finn asked.

"The river?" I wondered. Were there any goblins with a water affinity? Maybe.

"Beware of arrows, keep your shields ready!" I ordered as I spotted a goblin drawing a bow. I threw a necrotic bolt at it. Most of the attackers were still hidden by the trees. The skeletons had engaged them immediately once they had left the forest. Which meant the combat happened at the edge of the tree line.

I could order the soldiers to fully engage. We were in the open while they were somewhat hidden. But pushing into the forest sounded like a bad idea. I decided the best course of action was to hold and wait for the camp to wake up. Also, it was time for necromancy!

I had lost three skeletons so far but there were a few dead goblins as well. I focused on my magic. I scanned the area for any corpse. Then I started raising them.

Goblins were known to attack in hordes. They were weak individually but large in numbers. It was a necromancer's dream, assuming you had enough mana.

"Assassins!" Someone shouted.

I stopped my necromancy, ready to defend myself. I was using a water shield already. Then I saw a goblin with black skin, instead of the more common green one. He almost appeared out of nowhere as he jumped me with a dagger.

A big mouth caught him in the air. The attacker screamed as Nyx took a bite out of him. I looked around, the soldiers were engaged with a second assassin but seemed to have it handled. I trusted Nyx and focused on the dead once more.

More and more undead goblins joined my ranks and I pushed them into the forest. I told them to hunt. I saw more lightning flashing in the forest. Their shamans did kill quite a few of the zombies. But there were always more.

No reinforcements arrived from the camp behind us and I could hear fighting. The attack from the other side must have been more substantial than I thought. But Hatsumi was there and the camp was full of soldiers. I focused on the forest.

Suddenly Nyx unleashed a necrotic breath at the grass in front of her. She had already finished the first assassin. I was briefly confused until I heard screaming from inside her cloud. The assassins used some form of camouflage but Nyx had found them.

They were clearly targeting me. I guess they did not like to fight my horde of undead. An arrow hit my water shield, it held. I smiled. I would show them a true horde.

Once again I focused on the corpses. I poured my mana into them! Sweat formed on my forehead. There were a lot of goblins. And a lot of dead ones. I noticed there were quite a few corpses behind me as well. The fighting on the other side of the camp was hopefully going well. But It would not hurt to provide them with more undead.

I was not sure how many corpses my senses found. But I pulled more and more mana from my core. And I commanded all of them to rise.
