After Jimmy left Dave's office, he went straight downstairs to go home. On the way home, Jimmy kept pondering what exactly Dave meant.
At the end, Dave told him to stay updated on the case progress but didn't assign any tasks, making Jimmy feel that Dave perhaps had more to say.
Earlier, he just asked Jimmy's opinion about the case. Jimmy recalled his response, which seemed fine, but he still couldn't grasp Dave's intention.
This feeling of being cornered made Jimmy uncomfortable; he couldn't predict the bosses' thoughts, nor could he prepare a plan in advance. Once Dave and the others assigned a task, he'd have to improvise.
When he got home, Nia saw Jimmy with a furrowed brow. Without asking the reason, she handed him a glass of whiskey.
Holding the glass, Jimmy pulled Nia onto the sofa, "You know what? Today a Senator died at the Empire State Building."
Nia nodded, leaning against Jimmy, "I heard, they say it was done by your people."
Jimmy: "I don't think so. The person caught was Peter Bullock, my former supervisor. He's just a weak guy; he never shot anyone in all his years at the FBI, never."
Nia: "Maybe it was just manslaughter? He might've missed his shot."
Jimmy shook his head and took a sip of his drink, "Peter's not someone who would recklessly fire under stress. Though his shooting skills are average, he has good psychological resilience. I don't believe he would lose control in such a situation, especially when facing a Senator. Shooting, or even pointing a gun at him, is a big deal."
Nia: "So what do you plan to do? Help him?"
Jimmy: "I don't know... I really want to help him, but... he disappointed me, a few days ago."
Nia stood up, looking at Jimmy, "What happened?"
Jimmy: "Do you remember a few days ago when Peter and Elizabeth were kidnapped?"
Nia nodded, and Jimmy continued, "I looked for clues and eventually saved Peter and Elizabeth. Later, when returning to the bureau, Peter accused me of wanting to kill the kidnappers, saying they didn't deserve to die... The male kidnapper was shot twice, critically injured but eventually saved. The female kidnapper was shot once, not life-threatening. Now both kidnappers are in prison, awaiting the Federation Prosecutor's charge to court."
Jimmy finished his drink, looking at Nia, "That man was an escaped convict; when kidnapping Peter and Elizabeth, they had just committed two robberies, armed robbery of jewelry stores. People like that, whatever their reason, are certainly committing malicious crimes."
Nia picked up the bottle, poured Jimmy more wine, thought for a moment, then poured herself some as well, clinking glasses with Jimmy, "Don't overthink it. If you don't want to help, don't. Your happiness matters most."
Jimmy slowly drank, though Peter has various flaws, undeniably, he is a good person, just occasionally thinking unclearly, unable to discern who truly cares for him, becoming a Holy Mother figure, completely disregarding Jimmy's perspective.
As for investigating murder cases, Jimmy is quite experienced. His ability to stick in the Homicide Team and temporarily represent it indicates Hughes and others have recognized Jimmy's competence.
This is unquestionable; if Jimmy lacked ability, Hughes would've arranged a superior long ago. Manhattan's office has plenty of Senior Agents and Supervisory Special Agents, unlikely to leave a team leaderless.
Despite the fact that the deceased held a high status, this murder case wasn't much different from others—investigation, reconstructing the scene, tracking down the murderer—given enough time and network support, Jimmy believes he can uncover the truth, regardless of whether Peter acted.
However, there are many issues now. The biggest problem is that neither Hughes nor Dave supports Jimmy's involvement, or rather Hughes explicitly stated not to let Jimmy intervene. Whereas Dave, tonight's conversation made Jimmy feel he might have other ideas.
Nia: "What are you thinking about?"
Jimmy: "Nothing. Oh, now even if I wanted to help him, I can't. I can't approach the joint investigation team."
Nia: "Stop worrying about it, let things happen naturally. Want to watch a movie? What do you want to see?"
Jimmy put down his glass, got up and headed to the bedroom, "You choose, I'll go change my clothes."

The next morning, Jimmy woke up early, without waking Nia, got up, washed, and went out.
Jimmy drove straight to Hughes' house, called him, and waited in the car.
After a while, Hughes opened the door, dressed casually. Jimmy got out of the car to greet him. Hughes pointed to the side, and they walked down the sidewalk, "About Peter?"
Jimmy: "Yeah, I want to know the current situation, what happened."
Hughes: "Peter was framed. That James Bennett is Neil Cavrey's father, convicted for killing a police officer years ago. His partner, Allen Parker, has been collecting data on their precinct's corrupt cops, and the box they found contains evidence harmful to Senator Pratt."
Jimmy: "I know, heard you guys talk about it before. What's the deal with the Empire State Building this time?"
Hughes: "They scanned and located that box, but newcomer Karaway also got some news, confirmed the approximate floor, and informed Senator Pratt.
