Chapter 568: Unexpected Developments (Part 2)

Jimmy: "Isabel, do you have any other news? Besides Peter Bullock getting arrested."

Isabel: "No, I just got the news. Let's wait until they come back and ask. Don't guess blindly for now."

Jimmy nodded: "This is trouble. If Peter is charged with murdering the Senator, this case might be out of our office's jurisdiction. Mahong and the Homicide Team will likely want to avoid suspicion. They might have to get someone from DC to investigate."

Isabel sighed: "It's been a long time since we've had such a big mess. I always thought you were the most troublesome, but it looks like Peter's trouble is much bigger than yours."

Jimmy was speechless: "Don't compare my petty issues with Peter, please. My God, at most I've killed a few more people, but I've never killed a big shot like a Senator."

Isabel glared at Jimmy: "Do you even hear yourself? If it got out that you've killed over a hundred suspects in the past six or seven years, just the complaints alone would drown you. I guarantee, if it leaks, media from across the country will be lining up to interview you! No matter where you hide, they'll dig you up and expose everything, and you can forget having a peaceful day ever again."

Jimmy: "Well, that's not my fault. They brought it on themselves. If I'd ever killed an innocent, I wouldn't be sitting here now. I'm just cleaning up trash for this world, and God will reward me for my good deeds."

Isabel: "Is that so? Alright, then I'll just have a word with Mrs. Mason that you're volunteering to make your records public."

Jimmy immediately pleaded: "I was wrong, Isa, I was just talking smack. I'm sorry."

Isabel rolled her eyes at Jimmy and dropped the subject.

After a while, Supervisor Karaway and Jones all returned, but Peter was not with them.

Supervisor Karaway and Jones headed straight to the meeting room, and Karaway addressed Isabel and Jimmy: "Sorry to keep you waiting this long."

Isabel: "Supervisor Karaway, Mason asked us to get an update on the progress and coordinate with you to ensure we have a consistent message externally."

Karaway: "Alright, but for now, we need to keep everything under wraps. No information can be disclosed to the outside."

Isabel: "OK, got it."

Jimmy suddenly interjected: "Supervisor Karaway, even if we can't disclose anything publicly, we still need to understand the current situation. The Public Affairs Office needs to handle not just the media, but other agencies as well."

Karaway: "As of now, we have one result: Peter Bullock is suspected of murdering Senator Terrance Pratt and was arrested on-site. We need to wait for more information from the investigation. And you are?"

Jimmy: "Public Affairs Office, Jimmy Yang."

Karaway's expression flickered briefly but then returned to normal. "We'll keep you updated on the case details promptly. With that, we need to start investigating the case quickly."

Just as Jimmy was about to ask further about Peter, Isabel stepped forward: "Thank you, Supervisor Karaway. We'll head back now and look forward to your latest updates. Jimmy, let's go."

Jimmy nodded and followed Isabel out of the meeting room, while Supervisor Karaway watched them leave towards the elevator before returning to his office.

Jones, who had been silent, followed Karaway, his mind in a whirl. He poured himself a strong black coffee and downed it quickly.

Jones turned his head towards Diana, who was seated at her desk. Perhaps sensing his gaze, Diana looked up at Jones, and they silently exchanged glances, each pondering what was going on.

Jimmy and Isabel went to Mrs. Mason's office to relay Supervisor Karaway's messages, then left her office.

Jimmy returned to his single office, shut the door, and attempted to call Hughes, but it went straight to voicemail.

It was daytime, so why was Hughes' phone off? It was strange. Jimmy wanted to confirm the news with him, even though Hughes had retired; he would certainly know more than Jimmy.

Peter was in deep trouble this time. Although the details were unclear, a Senator's death was no small matter. The Manhattan office was about to become the storm's epicenter.

Federal Senators are protected by the USSS Special Service Bureau. Besides the President, Vice President, and President-Elect, the Bureau also protects senior government officials and Senators. It's uncertain what happened to Pratt's agent from the Bureau. Regardless, D.C.'s Special Service Bureau headquarters would surely send people over to assist with the investigation.

Washington is probably in chaos; FBI headquarters, DHS, and USSS will at least send people over, and other agencies likely have the news by now too.

As Jimmy considered the aftermath, his phone rang, and he quickly answered, "Hughes, what happened?"

Hughes: "Don't get involved, wait for the investigation results."

And with that, Hughes hung up, leaving Jimmy with no chance to ask further. It seemed Hughes was swamped too, probably investigating information as well.

There was no way to clock out on time today, so in the afternoon, Jimmy called Nia and remained in his office waiting for updates. What was confirmed, though, was that FBI headquarters had quickly dispatched personnel to the scene, but the investigation's progress was still unclear, with no reports yet.
