North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 540: Investigation

The NYPD was also mobilized; Nia knew Jimmy had been shot on the street. Though she wasn't too worried about him, anger was inevitable, so her unlucky father Kevin received her call.

After answering the call, Kevin immediately contacted people at the bureau to inquire about the situation. As the deputy commissioner, he lacked the ability to directly command the patrol officers and detectives below him, because for these grassroots officers, the deputy commissioner was a bit too high-ranking. Normally, they would only accept orders from the sergeant and police captain above.

Kevin made a few calls and finally figured out the current situation. Three o'clock: Jimmy was okay, the gunshot suspect had not been found, the suspect had been shot and injured.

Thinking it over, Kevin got up and left the office. For this kind of matter, it's better to find someone in person.

Some patrol officers and detectives who had received orders from above began spreading the net wide, starting investigations around all known underground clinics using the target car they discovered as the center, striving to find the shooter as quickly as possible and fulfilling the instructions from above.

Although direct relations couldn't be established with Kevin's side, enabling his own boss to connect with this big shot was a major achievement. Though the temporary benefits might not be apparent, good things would surely come eventually.

Over at Jimmy's side, the discovery of the dead security guard also made the NYPD folks quite troubled. This building hadn't been fully constructed, it was just temporarily halted. Now, with a murder occurring, they had to contact the owner and the construction team to inspect the premises.

Luckily, since this was the murder scene, many matters could be handled first. They successfully discovered the hidden room within the building; unfortunately, it had been cleaned, leaving nothing useful behind. Now they were just waiting for the forensic personnel to check if there were any usable fingerprints or clues.

Jimmy didn't continue waiting; it didn't matter whether Perkins had been here before, it was pointless now. He should be following Mahong to investigate the waitress who got shot.

-----------------

When Perkins received Emily's call, her head was spinning. She had planned to rest during the day and work at night. Suddenly, Emily called saying her assassination attempt failed, she was shot and now fleeing, which was simply baffling.

However, Perkins didn't say much over the phone, just told her to contact her after escaping, then immediately began tidying up items in the room, dragging two bags and a suitcase into the car before leaving the building.

To avoid any problems, on her way out, she casually shot the security guard, completely erasing any exposure risks she had here.

Since Emily was still on the run, her exact location wasn't fully confirmed, but Perkins was already heading towards the last location Emily had previously given her.

Emily was unlucky too; early in the morning, she was already staking out near Jimmy's apartment. Having seen photos in advance, she tailed Jimmy as he left the apartment heading to the parking lot. Watching him drive away, Emily got to the vicinity of Federal Square near the FBI before Jimmy, and stayed there until Jimmy drove his car into the underground parking lot, choosing to leave temporarily, planning to return by noon.

Staying near the FBI offices for long while staking out would definitely get her noticed, especially since she wasn't monitoring from a room in a nearby building.

When Jimmy walked to the hotel at noon and returned from it, Emily shadowed him. As a trainee assassin who had completed training, she certainly had undergone thorough intelligence gathering training; assassination was not just about walking up and shooting someone. Many times, the preceding intelligence collection had to be handled by themselves.

Jimmy walking slowly on the sidewalk was too tempting; Emily repeatedly watched Jimmy walking on the sidewalk unguardedly, and finally couldn't resist acting.

Unfortunately, the moment she decided to act, her murderous intent already alerted Jimmy, leading to him hiding behind a vehicle by the roadside. Given previous instances of Emily and Jimmy brushing past each other, theoretically, Jimmy would let her go, and once they reached the FBI office, he could take her away in his car to implement the arrest.

However, when the murderous intent was upon him, Jimmy realized his plan was thwarted. Thus, he fired two shots initially, intending not to kill but to wound and interrogate where Perkins was.

Jimmy subsequently emptied a bullet chamber with six rounds, successfully hitting Emily twice, neither shot reaching her head but her torso. Jimmy targeted the torso area—the driver's seat position—because he intended to capture her alive, but unexpectedly, Emily stepped on the gas pedal and dashed out.

Reaching an underground parking lot, Emily hijacked a driver who had just started to leave. The driver, held at gunpoint, didn't resist. After getting out of the driver's seat, he was knocked out by Emily, thrown into the trunk, and she left the parking lot driving.

This also explains why the NYPD and FBI personnel lost her trail at the scene. There were some bloodstains on the ground, but the trail quickly vanished after a short distance.

The parking lot surveillance was purely decorative; in reality, there was merely a camera that appeared functional, but was broken, making it impossible for the police to verify how many cars passed through there during this period.

The NYPD patrol officers spread their net on the streets, while detectives familiar with underground operations began investigating underground clinics. However, after several hours, still nothing was gained. Although Emily was a trainee assassin yet to complete her graduation task and lacking experience, she was not without skill. Just by temporarily staying at a few underground parking lots, swiftly bandaging the wounds, she escaped the police's narrow search perimeter.
